The 10 Best Episodes Of Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia Ranked According To IMDb

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia has cemented itself as one of the best American sitcoms out there. It’s also broken records as the single longest-running sitcom, having done so with the premiere of its fifteenth season near the end of 2021. Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenney, and Charlie Day have done an absolutely fantastic job bringing their twisted visions for the show to life in a way that’s hilarious to watch, even if many of the situations within the show are rather dark.

It’s typical for long-running series to begin to decline in quality over the years, but fan reception for Always Sunny has remained immensely positive throughout its entire run. While most of the highest-ranking episodes on IMDb are older classics, there are still one or two newer episodes that manage to be just as good.

10 Season 7, Episode 2: The Gang Goes To The Jersey Shore (9.2/10)

The 10 Best Episodes Of Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia Ranked According To IMDb

“The Gang Goes To The Jersey Shore” is a memorable chart-topper for quite a few reasons. Of course, the best part of the episode is the “rum ham” that Frank creates and brings along, as well as the distress he goes through when it floats out to sea.

Dee and Dennis are the ones originally the most excited for the trip, and ironically end up having the worst time, with Dee losing a chunk of her hair after it gets stuck in an amusement park ride moments before takeoff. Charlie and the Waitress have a cute bonding moment, only for it to be revealed the next morning that she was far from sober and now wants nothing to do with him like always.

9 Season 7, Episode 7: CharDee MacDennis- The Game Of Games (9.2/10)

The 10 Best Episodes Of Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia Ranked According To IMDb

“CharDee MacDennis: The Game Of Games” sees the results of just what happens whenever The Gang tries to channel their boredom into something fun and creative. The result is a board game experience unlike any other, with Frank being introduced to the game for the first time and acting as an audience surrogate for the episode.

One of the most memorable moments of the episode is the ending, in which both teams tie and they have to draw the mysterious “Black Card”. The scene is shot in an incredibly dramatic way, only to reveal that all the Black Card says is that the winner is decided through a coin flip.

8 Season 9, Episode 3: The Gang Tries Desperately To Win An Award (9.3/10)

The 10 Best Episodes Of Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia Ranked According To IMDb

“The Gang Tries Desperately To Win An Award” is actually a meta-commentary about the fact that at the time, the series hadn’t won any awards despite being a long-running hit. The Gang becomes tired of not being recognized and tries to change things up to give patrons what they think they want.

The problem is, they try to emulate a successful bar full of charming, funny friends who have a great, lovable dynamic. The Gang are horrible people who are constantly at one another’s throats, so this understandably doesn’t go well.

7 Season 13, Episode 4: Time’s Up For The Gang (9.3/10)

The 10 Best Episodes Of Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia Ranked According To IMDb

“Time’s Up For The Gang” is one of the more recent episodes for the series, and it satires a rather delicate topic in today’s society; the Me Too movement. Paddy’s gets put on a list of bars known for being sexually hostile to women, and they must attend a seminar in order to get their bar taken off.

In reality, Dennis arranges the whole thing in order to force other bar owners in Philadelphia to listen to his twisted views on the issue of women being harassed by men. Every member of the Gang gets their time to shine this episode, and it’s a hilariously memorable ride the entire way through.

6 Season 5, Episode 10: The D.E.N.N.I.S System (9.4/10)

The 10 Best Episodes Of Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia Ranked According To IMDb

“The D.E.N.N.I.S System” sees Dennis detail his method of getting any woman to fall for and become dependent on him to the rest of the gang. For someone whose morals are as corrupted as his, this makes perfect sense, and he expects the rest of the Gang to understand his methods.

While Dee is creeped out by this, the rest of the Gang are amazed that he has his art of picking up women down to such a ‘science’. Charlie attempts to use this system but has no luck, and it’s revealed that Mac and Frank have systems of their own- which more or less revolve around swooping in after Dennis is done with a woman.

5 Season 11, Episode 5: Mac And Dennis Move To The Suburbs (9.5/10)

The 10 Best Episodes Of Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia Ranked According To IMDb

“Mac And Dennis Move To The Suburbs” is one of the best examples of just how unhealthy Mac and Dennis’ dynamic can be. They move to the suburbs after making a bet with Frank, who thinks they absolutely won’t be able to handle it.

He’s proven right almost immediately when the two begin driving each other up the wall. Mac can barely function being left alone all day while Dennis is working, and Dennis loses his mind over things such as the rush hour commute.

4 Season 12, Episode 2: The Gang Goes To A Water Park (9.5/10)

The 10 Best Episodes Of Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia Ranked According To IMDb

“The Gang Goes To A Water Park” is just what it sounds like, with Frank and Charlie being the only ones who really get to partake in any traditional waterpark fun. That is until Frank decides to go down a Thundergun-themed ride that doesn’t have any running water, and it goes just about as horribly as one would expect.

Dee and Mac attempt to go down the Kiddy Twister despite being far too big, and end up getting stuck inside for a majority of the episode. Meanwhile, Dennis teaches a young girl who he sees stealing how to steal- but even better. She becomes so good that she actually cons him at the end of the episode.

3 Season 12, Episode 6: Hero Or Hate Crime? (9.5/10)

The 10 Best Episodes Of Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia Ranked According To IMDb

“Hero Or Hate Crime” is the third highest-rated episode of all time, primarily for how ridiculous the concept is. Frank saves Mac’s life from a falling piano by calling out to him, but he uses a slur typically targeted at gay men to do so, and the Gang ends up going to a professional arbitrator to work everything out.

Except they aren’t really there to figure out whether Frank committed a hate crime or not- that’s actually more of a subplot. In reality, the Gang is there because they want to figure out who’s the rightful owner of a two-dollar unscratched lottery ticket.

2 Season 4, Episode 13: The Nightman Cometh (9.7/10)

The 10 Best Episodes Of Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia Ranked According To IMDb

“The Nightman Cometh” shows exactly what happens when Charlie tries to write a musical, and tries to get the other members of the Gang to take it seriously enough for things to go well. Pretty much every line of the play is incredibly memorable, from Frank’s “troll toll” song to Dee trying to use her time on-stage to find potential boyfriends.

And of course, there’s Charlie trying to use the very end of the play to propose to the Waitress, who’s only there in the first place because Charlie promised to leave her alone forever if she showed up. He of course doesn’t follow this rule, and she rejects him immediately, but the rest of the Gang seem to have a fun time.

1 Season 10, Episode 4: Charlie Work (9.8/10)

“Charlie Work” takes the cake as the single highest-rated episode of It’s Always Sunny, and is the only episode to reach a 9.8 score from fans. The entire episode is shot as if it’s done in one take, which is masterful camerawork, and details just how much Charlie actually does to keep the bar running.

Throughout the entire episode, Charlie does everything he can to stop the rest of the Gang from causing the bar to fail their health inspection. It shows just how much Charlie cares about his job and is jam-packed with ridiculous antics to boot, making it super enjoyable even on rewatches.
