The Grand Theft Auto formula isn’t particularly complex, but it’s extremely hard to perfect. On the face of it, the series is a simple third-person shooter in an open-world game, but it’s all in the details that make it great.

The interaction with the NPCs, the fun cheat codes, the satirical nature of the characters, and the dense amount of options and customization is what makes GTA the gold standard of sandbox games, but it doesn’t stop other developers from trying. From a beloved animated TV dad to the president of the United States, these games go from weird to absurd, but they’re so much fun and the next-best-things to play when there are no great Rockstar games in sight.

10 The Godfather (2006) – 77

Though The Godfather series depicted how terrible the life of crime in the mafia was, despite a few scenes of glitz and glamor, the video-game adaptation, which was released decades later, completely ignored the message and zeroed in on the violence.

Not only that, but it ramped up the glamor of it all too, creating a fantastically enjoyable game. It follows a brand new character rise up through the ranks of the Corleone family as players drive around New York extorting small businesses and getting into shoot-outs with rival gangs.

9 The Simpsons: Hit & Run (2003) – 82

Being easily the most family-friendly game of all the Grand Theft Auto clones, The Simpsons: Hit & Run was a surprise hit upon its release, as the graphics, gameplay, and story were all top-notch.

The game featured a fully rendered Springfield for players to roam around in, along with a huge selection of vehicles to drive and destroy at players’ leisure. Missions found players having to travel from one destination to another in a very GTA-like fashion, and if there’s any game that deserves a remaster the most, it’s Hit & Run.

8 Watch Dogs 2 (2016) – 82

If there’s any developer who picked up Rockstar’s MO and ran with it for every single game, it’s Ubisoft. The developer’s non-open world games are few and far between, so this was right up their alley.

But the series in their catalog that’s modeled off GTA the most is Watch Dogs. Being able to drive around and fire weapons at enemies in metropolitan cities is Watch Dogs’ bread and butter, and the second game in the series came close to perfecting its amalgam of GTA influences with the game’s unique hacking system.

7 Sleeping Dogs (2012) – 83

One of the unpopular opinions about Grand Theft Auto is that Sleeping Dogs is actually superior to the celebrated series. Instead of being some kind of gangster, players are on the other side of the law, as they play as a police officer tasked with infiltrating a murderous triad.

Just like in GTA, players can roam around a huge city, but this time it’s Hong Kong. Sleeping Dogs has such a detailed map too, with so many objects that players are able to interact with as they can use parkour to quickly traverse around, and there’s more of a focus on melee attacks too.

6 Crackdown (2007) – 83

Of all of the games, Crackdown actually has a connection to the Grand Theft Auto series, as David Jones was the creator of both Crackdown and the first GTA game

. Crackdown is similar to GTA in that players free-roam around a giant city taking down rival gangs, but the 2007 game is massively inventive with its gameplay. The player has super-human powers that strengthen with the more orbs that are collected throughout the career mode, and it has a very unique cartoon-like art style.

5 Just Cause 2 (2010) – 84

With Just Cause 2, Square Enix was able to balance the vast world with satisfying mechanics. On top of that, the alternate ways of traversing maps were pushed to their limits in the Just Cause series, as its big USP is being able to hang off any type of vehicle with a grappling hook and parachute.

It’s a great example of a successful open-world game.

4 Saints Row IV (2013) – 86

The Saints Row series started as a GTA clone in every sense of the term, as the first game was not only the same in format, but also shares a satirical story and jokes. However, with each passing game in the series, it got wilder and wilder.

In Saints Row IV, Players control the president of the United States and have to fight off an alien army before they fully invade Earth. From being able to use sex toys as weapons to being able to kill people with dubstep music, the game is chaotic, but in a good way.

3 Mercenaries: Playground Of Destruction (2005) – 86

Though there are many games nipping at the heels of the GTA series in the early 2000s, none came as close to the quality of the franchise as Pandemic’s Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction.

The name says it all, as the game is literally a sandbox for players to wreck all kinds of havoc with tanks, bazookas, and anything else they can get their hands on in the map. Literally any building in the game can be torched down, blown up, or completely leveled, and it’s so much fun.

2 Bully (2006) – 87

Sometimes when a game is so influential, the very company who developed it can be doomed to make the same game over again, a la Ubisoft. But though Rockstar very much influenced themselves with the GTA series, they were able to put enough of a spin on it to make it feel fresh and brand new.

Bully, one of the Rockstar games that players forget about, is an (almost) child-friendly game, as it’s essentially GTA-lite. Instead of carjacking people’s vehicles, Jimmy steals bikes and go-karts, and instead of gunning people down, Jimmy has a slingshot. The game is hilarious and enthralling is it takes place in the mysterious town of Bullworth, and just like in GTA, players can free roam at their leisure… when they’re not in class.

1 Mafia (2002) – 88

Taking place in the fictional city of Lost Heaven, Mafia is one of the very earliest examples of a game influenced by Grand Theft Auto, as it was released all the way back in 2002, almost 20 years ago.

It has all the staples of a GTA game – third-person, open world, guns, and vehicles at the player’s disposal – and some may say it’s even better than the GTA games that were released around the same time, Grand Theft Auto III and Vice City. The game was praised for feeling realistic, and the map felt full of life compared to the GTA series at the time.
