It was a pretty big deal when HBO joined in on the streaming wars. 2020 saw them launch HBO Max, which immediately became a top competitor to the likes of Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime, Hulu, and a multitude of others. The biggest selling point for the streaming service at first was the large back catalog of old HBO shows.
They also inked a huge deal with Warner Bros. for new movies as well. Something that flew a bit under the radar was the original series made for the platform. There were a handful of quality ones to hit HBO Max in 2020 that scored solid IMDb ratings.
10 The Flight Attendant (7.1)
When The Flight Attendant was first announced, it was set to be a miniseries. Based on the 2018 novel of the same name, the premise follows a flight attendant who becomes the center of a murder investigation when she wakes up next to the dead body of her lover.
However, due to strong reviews and viewership, the series was renewed for a second season. The ensemble cast is great and earned a SAG nomination, while lead actor Kaley Cuoco is up for a Golden Globe. The show itself is also nominated for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy.
9 Tig N’ Seek (7.3)
One aspect that HBO Max has really done well with is the content they’ve put out for children. A highlight of that section of the streaming service is Tig N’ Seek, which is one of several shows produced by Cartoon Network Studios.
The show follows the adventure of a young boy detective named Tiggy and his cat Gweeseek, who can make gadgets. Their goal is to recover items at the Department of Lost and Found. The short-form show is great for kids and features quality voice talents like Jermaine Clement and Wanda Sykes.
8 Love Life (7.5)
With the launch of HBO Max came Love Life and it immediately showed that the streaming service was going to deliver great content. The anthology series is meant to focus on a different person each season and tell the stories of their various romances throughout life.
Season one was led by the always charming Anna Kendrick as Darby Carter. She went through destined love, a failed marriage, friendship drama, and parenthood in the span of ten episodes. The highly-anticipated season two will shift its focus to a character portrayed by William Jackson Harper.
7 Raised By Wolves (7.6)
The first true major drama on the streaming service was Raised by Wolves. For a look at how special this show can be, all it takes is to see that legendary director Ridley Scott helmed the first two episodes. Scott is also an executive producer of the sci-fi series.
Raised by Wolves has an intriguing setup where two androids known as Mother and Father are tasked with raising human children on another planet following the destruction of Earth. The show was praised for being imaginative, having great visuals, and some stimulating themes.
6 Close Enough (7.7)
A lot of the animated originals on HBO Max are aimed at children. However, that’s not the case for Close Enough, which is directed towards adults much like the popular Harley Quinn series. This show is all too relatable, centering on a couple coping with life’s changes from their 20s to their 30s.
Interestingly, this was actually planned back in 2017 on TBS but was shelved until HBO Max picked it up and it has now been renewed for a third season. The twist on the seemingly mundane setup is that the daily issues the couple endures are handled in fun, sci-fi fashion.
5 Legendary (7.8)
Another HBO Max strong suit is their reality television section. One of their best series in that category is Legendary, which is a competition show where eight teams (known as houses) of LGBTQ+ contestants compete in various ball events for a $100,000 grand prize.
The events include voguing, dancing, runway walking, and more. Meanwhile, the judges included the likes of Megan Thee Stallion and Jameela Jamil. The show has received strong reviews and was renewed for a second season soon after premiering.
4 Selena + Chef (8.1)
With popular shows like Master Chef, Top Chef, and almost everything on the Food Network, it takes a lot to find a unique take on a cooking series concept. One person who did was Selena Gomez, which led to the creation of Selena + Chef during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Gomez loves to cook but admits that she’s not great at it. So, the series sees her learn how to cook from professional chefs via webcam while quarantined. The show is a breezy delight to watch and audiences can relate to some of Selena’s struggles in the kitchen. It’s also wonderful that Selena donates to a food-related charity in each episode.
3 Looney Tunes Cartoons (8.2)
Technically, Looney Tunes Cartoons premiered in 2019 at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival. It didn’t get a wider release until arriving on HBO Max when it launched. The series is pretty much exactly what a viewer would expect given the title.
It takes the classic Looney Tunes characters and puts them in fun new adventures that pay homage to the past. Although it hasn’t become a huge hit, reviews were largely positive thanks to how well it captured the spirit of the iconic cartoons of yesteryear.
2 Veneno (8.6)
A few of the new series on HBO Max are actually co-productions. One of those is Veneno, which is a Spanish language show that originally aired in Spain. The series tells the story of the life and death of the legendary “La Veneno,” a transgender singer and TV personality.
Cristina Ortiz Rodriguez is often viewed as one of the most important LGBTQ+ icons in Spain’s history. The series focuses on her life and those around her who she impacted. Reviews were incredibly positive, with it being called a must-see show.
1 Adventure Time: Distant Lands (8.8)
The original Adventure Time series is considered one of the best modern animation shows anywhere. That may have wrapped in 2018 but HBO Max was able to continue the story. Adventure Time: Distant Lands is a series of hour-long episodes that act as something of a sequel.
As of now, only two of the four episodes are actually available to stream. Both have been widely praised as it continued the story in interesting fashion, was true to the original series, and gave loyal viewers some fan service to appreciate.
