Films featuring lovers-on-the-run have captured the imagination of moviegoers the world over because of their combination of romance and anti-authoritarianism. They present romantic yet dangerous tales of outlaw couples whose love for each other sustains them while the world is seemingly against them, for reasons that aren’t justified and for some that are.
This genre has produced some of the most iconic films ever made and has led to many films attempting to copy the formula of free-wheeling couples on the run from the law. Each film features lovers that rely only on each other who just want to be free, happy, and to play by their own rules, even if that results in illegal and immoral behavior. Audiences seem to enjoy being along for the ride.
10 Thieves Like Us – 7.0
Directed by Robert Altman, Thieves Like Us tells the story of two prison escapees who resume their bank robbing activities. However, along the way, one falls in love with a woman while trying to hide out from the law.
Advertised as being in the vein of the more stylish Bonnie & Clyde from a few years prior, Thieves Like Us is a slower-paced and much more contemplative film than the former. Audiences were in for a surprise when seeing the unglamorous, un-Hollywood film leaving many disappointed. However, some critics felt it was one of the best films of the 1970s and a great addition to Altman’s oeuvre.
9 Queen & Slim – 7.1
Written by Lena Waithe, Queen & Slim is the story of a Black couple who go on the run after they kill a racist police officer in self-defense. The film cleverly takes the couple-on-the-run genre and injects tragic, real-world issues that have the power to get viewers talking.
Queen & Slim successfully uses the medium to entertain audiences by telling them a gripping, subtextual story that can make them see the world from a different perspective. Ultimately, movies like Queen & Slim help viewers understand a serious issue through the lens of entertainment.
8 Wild At Heart – 7.2
From the unique vision of director David Lynch, Wild At Heart tells the story of a recently released ex-con Sailor (Nicholas Cage) who goes on the run with his love Lula (Laura Dern) after her domineering mother puts a hit out on him.
In Lynch on Lynch, the director spoke about how he always found the film to represent “finding love in hell” and he puts his stamp on the movie, blending sex and violence together to create one of the most disturbing romance films ever made. In addition to Cage and Dern’s sizzling chemistry, Wild At Heart is darkly funny and was known to have turned off fervent fans of Lynch’s already bizarre film oeuvre.
7 Natural Born Killers – 7.3
Initially written by Quentin Tarantino about a married couple who goes on a killing spree, director Oliver Stone decided to take it in a very different direction while maintaining some Tarantino flourishes. The film revolves around serial killer couple Mickey and Mallory Knox (Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis) who are on the run from the law. However, they’ve basically become celebrities and the country can’t get enough of them.
In contrast to Tarantino’s original version, Stone wanted to make the film about America’s obsession with violence and specifically the role media plays. Often described as a big-budget student film, Natural Born Killers tells its wild story through different film stocks, animation, and a frenzied editing style.
6 The Getaway – 7.4
After a heist gone wrong, a recently released prisoner goes on the run with his wife to try and reach Mexico before the law or other criminals catch them. Directed by Sam Peckinpah and starring Steve McQueen in one of his most iconic roles, The Getaway was initially released to poor reviews before becoming a classic.
The Getaway is a great example of the shift, in terms of realism, in 1970s Hollywood films. The film isn’t a simple heist/action movie, but instead, a much grittier and violent film than those made in the past, which was the trend during that decade. Guided by Peckinpah’s hand, The Getaway is an entertaining-yet-amoral love story and thriller.
5 Gun Crazy – 7.6
Written by infamously blacklisted Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo using an alias, Gun Crazy is a classic example of 1950’s film noir moviemaking. Gun Crazy features a gun-obsessed couple who go on the run robbing banks. The film is notable for a great bank robbery scene that was filmed in one long continuous take.
While some of the dialogue could be considered “on the nose,” and the performances by John Dall and Peggy Cummins over-the-top, Gun Crazy has become a thrilling classic that has influenced greatly the lovers-on-the-run genre like the legendary film Bonnie & Clyde.
4 Breathless – 7.8
A great example of the French New Wave, Jean-Luc Goddard’s masterpiece tells the story of a Humphrey Bogart-loving thief who runs away with his girlfriend after impulsively murdering a policeman. Since its release, Breathless has been considered one of the greatest films ever made.
In the years following its release, the film’s core themes of “young love” have inspired countless filmmakers and audience members who view stars Jean Seberg and Jean-Paul Belmondo as iconic lovers that society just doesn’t understand. At the time, the film’s use of jump cuts and non-linear storytelling were revolutionary but have since become somewhat commonplace.
3 Badlands – 7.8
Loosely based on the murder spree perpetrated by the couple Charles Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate, Sissy Spacek and Martin Sheen play two lovers, Holly and Kit. Holly’s father protests their relationship so Kit murders him and the lovers go on the run, killing anyone who attempts to bring them in, leading to a cross-country pursuit by law enforcement.
The debut film from acclaimed director Terrence Malick, Badlands features many aspects of his signature style that have since become staples of his films, like his poetic visual style and the meditative voice-overs by the main characters.
2 Bonnie and Clyde – 7.8
Considered a landmark film, Bonnie and Clyde is loosely based on the true story of bank robbers Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. Like their real-life counterparts, lovers Bonnie and Clyde (Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway) begin a cross-country crime spree involving robbery which, ultimately, results in their violent deaths.
While the film was based on an old story, director Arthur Penn used techniques from the French New Wave movement to make a gangster movie unlike those made previously. For a mainstream film, Bonnie and Clyde broke the rules when it came to sex and violence depicted on screen, ultimately changing the motion picture landscape following its release in 1967.
1 True Romance – 7.9
Another lovers-on-the-run Quentin Tarantino script that got reworked is the classic romantic crime thriller, True Romance. The film follows two lovers (Christian Slater and Rosanna Arquette) who run off with a suitcase full of cocaine but the mafia is in hot pursuit.
The finished film is a result of two different styles – Tarantino and director Tony Scott’s. Tarantino’s trademarks in True Romance include garish characters and pop culture references while also containing Tony Scott’s gripping action scenes. Amidst the violence, the couple’s love is the heart of the movie which is enhanced by Hans Zimmer’s beautiful score. Today, True Romance remains popular with Tarantino fans and movie fans alike.
