With the exception of silent films, movies typically incorporate music to convey emotions, whether it be intense strings in a horror movie, crashing symbols in an action flick, or emotive piano in a heartbreaking drama. Film scores tell the audience how to feel during specific scenes and add another element of enjoyment and immersion.
More recently, movie scores have become more widely appreciated not just for their artistic necessity in films but for their level of quality as works to be enjoyed on their own, with many fans listening to film soundtracks as they would any other genre of music. There are thousands of movie scores out there, and according to Ranker, these are the best of all time.
10 Forrest Gump – Alan Silvestri
Robert Zemeckis’ 1994 comedy-drama follows Forrest Gump, a kindhearted but dim-witted man, as he grows from a young boy in Alabama and begins to navigate adult life, often resulting in him getting into extraordinary, and historical, situations. Forrest Gump is a movie famously packed with thoughtful details, and it’s also extremely uplifting and touching, making it one of the most well-known and beloved movies of the past few decades. Alan Silvestri’s score is remarkable, setting not just the scenes in which viewers are supposed to be laughing with Forrest, but also adding a heartbreaking element to the scenes that bring viewers to tears every time.
9 The Good, The Bad And The Ugly – Ennio Morricone
Ennio Morricone produced, in his lifetime, more than 400 scores for movies and television shows, cementing himself as one of the most well-known composers of all time.
Morricone formed a close working relationship with Sergio Leone, a leading Italian movie directer, and together they worked on a number of Leone’s movies. Perhaps the most famous result of their collaboration is the 1966 epic spaghetti Western The Good, The Bad And The Ugly, which follows a group of cowboys who try to find buried gold but end up in a sweeping epic tale that includes many of what are now thought of as classic tropes of the genre.
8 Raiders Of The Lost Ark – John Williams
John Williams is know for his numerous collaborations with Steven Spielberg, and one of their most famous movie franchises is the India Jones series. Raiders Of The Lost Ark is the first installment and follows our archaeologist adventurer as he attempts to foil a Nazi plan to obtain the Ark of The Covenant, a religious artefact that, in the wrong hands, could destroy humanity. Although the entire score is phenomenal and no doubt a source of inspiration for modern day composers, it is Williams’ theme music that has become so ingrained in popular culture that any one could guess what it is from after listening to only a few seconds of it. It’s one of the many reasons why Raiders of the Lost Ark still holds up so well today.
7 Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back – John Williams
George Lucas’ second installment in the Star Wars franchise follows Luke Skywalker as he lands on a mysterious planet, hoping to find the mysterious and powerful Master Yoda. Upon successfully locating Yoda he trains to become the Jedi he is destined to be, while Han and Leia are left to continue fighting the Empire on the icy planet of Hoth. John Williams’ score has some tremendous moments, notably “The City In The Clouds,” which accompanies the stunning visuals of our heroes arriving in Cloud City.
6 Jaws – John Williams
John Williams’ theme for Jaws is arguably the most instantly recognizable piece of movie music of all time. Not only does the song make one think of Jaws, but it also evokes a feeling, a feeling of terror and dread that both Spielberg’s direction and Williams’ score achieved perfectly. Jaws follows a police chief who lives on Amity Island, an otherwise perfect seaside town that turns into a nightmarish island after the arrival of a Great White Shark. It is a well known fact that the release of Jaws caused many viewers to become terrified of the ocean, and while the movie itself is scary enough to cause such a panic, there is no doubt that John Williams’ score is equally to blame.
5 Back To The Future – Alan Silvestri
The first in a truly classic trilogy, Back To The Future follows a young boy named Marty McFly who, along with his eccentric inventor friend, Doc Brown, successfully travels back in time to 1955. When they arrive it soon becomes clear that his actions are changing the fate of the future and he must work to make sure it all happens as it did the first time round. Back To The Future is regarded as one of the finest 80’s movies, a truly iconic and unforgettable experience that fans revisit again and again. Alan Silvestri’s score matches the adventurous 80’s vibe perfectly and helps to put the viewers inside the story.
4 The Dark Knight – Hans Zimmer
Hans Zimmer has become one of the biggest names among movie composers, and his frequent collaborations with Christopher Nolan has given fans some of the most original, exciting and otherworldly soundtracks they could have hoped for. The Dark Knight, Nolan’s second installment in his Dark Knight trilogy, follows Bruce Wayne/Batman as he attempts to rid Gotham City of its new menace: The Joker. While the Dark Knight contains some absolutely breathtaking cinematography and heart-stopping action sequences, it is only when paired with Zimmer’s stunning score that these moments achieve their full, desired effect.
3 Star Wars – John Williams
A New Hope, the first Star Wars movie and the one that kicked off a world of sequels, prequels, spin-offs, toys, books, comics, etc. George Lucas’ spectacular space-opera follows a young man named Luke Skywalker, a seemingly normal and unimportant man who soon realises that his destiny is that of a Jedi, something that his father was and something that he has only heard about as myth.
John Williams’ score, especially the truly iconic Star Wars theme, is one of the most emotive, breathtaking, original and instantly recognisable scores that movie lovers had ever heard up to that point, and it continues to be a part of culture to this day.
2 The Lion King – Hans Zimmer
The Lion King, arguably the best animal movie of all time, tells the story of a young lion named Simba who, after his father Mufasa, is next in line to become the King of the Pride Lands. A heartbreaking, beautiful, unforgettable classic, The Lion King is one of the best animated movies of all time, beloved by many across the world. Although filled with performances of original Disney songs, The Lion King also features an original score by Hans Zimmer, and while the limelight is fixed on the standout songs sung by the likes of Elton John and Whoopi Goldberg, it is the beauty in between these songs that Zimmer is responsible for.
1 The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring – Howard Shore
The first installment in Peter Jackson’s epic adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien’s books of the same name, The Fellowship Of The Ring follows a group of Hobbits, Dwarves, and Elves, as they journey to Mordor to destroy the One Ring. The Fellowship Of The ring was followed by two more movies and made the Lord Of the Rings trilogy one of the biggest movie franchises of the 2000’s and resulted in various spin-offs and prequels. Howard Shore’s score is utterly beautiful, making great use of the source material and using medieval instruments to make what is an almost perfect accompanying piece to go with such a weird, wonderful and fantastical movie.
