Starring Riz Ahmed and Octavia Spencer, Prime Video’s recent sci-fi thriller Encounter is a gripping tale of survival and familial love. The central story deals with an ex-convict taking his two sons out on a road trip to escape what he believes is an extraterrestrial parasitic invasion.

As the plot thickens, the children must make some intense moral decisions while their father questions his own visions. Unpredictable and thrilling enough, Encounter would make for an interesting watch for fans of movies that deal with alien invasions, survival horror, and coming-of-age themes.

Much like Toby Maguire’s character Sam Cahill in the movie, Malik Khan in Encounter is a similarly troubled individual. Before his conviction, he was a decorated Marine. It is implied that the post-war trauma plays a part in his overprotective demeanor towards his children.

As an eight-year-old shows signs of supernatural powers, a religious cult and the FBI pursue him for their own selfish means. Now, it is up to the boy’s father to save him as the duo embark on a thrilling road trip to run away from the ensuing drama.

In thematic terms, Encounter is reminiscent of Midnight Special in the sense that both movies feature a father-son duo trying to make it out alive on the road. Apart from a healthy dose of sci-fi, Encounter and Midnight Special also benefit greatly from an overall sense of sentimentality.

6 Train To Busan (2016)- Available On Prime Video

One of the scariest zombie films in recent times, Train To Busan is a South Korean thriller that deals with a group of train passengers dealing with the sudden arrival of zombies on their journey.

Parallels can be drawn between Gong Yoo’s protagonist Seok-Woo is heavily comparable to Riz Ahmed’s Malik Khan. Both characters are divorced men who are trying to mend their relationship with their children. When unknown forces wreak havoc, they must resort to desperate measures to be a good guardian.

5 The Vast Of Night (2020)- Available On Prime Video

Another Prime Video original, The Vast of Night pays homage to vintage sci-fi shows like The Twilight Zone. As a schoolgirl and local radio jockey discover a mysterious radio signal from the cosmos, they team up to find its origin.

Focusing on atmospheric tension, it is bound to impress those who liked Encounter. This is because both movies deliberately make their “alien threats” ominous and open to interpretation. This not only creates much intrigue among the viewers but also helps in avoiding exposition.

4 Us (2019)- Available On Vudu

Directed by Jordan Peele, Us is a horror that centers upon a family of four being terrorized by their twisted doppelgangers. What follows is an adrenaline-fueled ride of chases and combats as the ordinary-looking family resorts to bloodshed in order to survive.

Encounter’s Malik Khan similarly unwillingly picks up arms in a desperate attempt to save his sons from infected humans as well as white supremacists. In fact, in one of the violent scenes, Phil Collins’ Against All Odds starts playing accidentally. A similar bizarrely interesting scene is in Us when NWA’s F*** The Police plays during a family murder.

While Sandra Bullock and Riz Ahmed share some similarities in their acting approach for their respective roles, the child actors that double as their wards are particularly notable in capturing the naivety and impatience of a pre-teenage phase.

2 The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2012)- Available On Showtime

Based on the novel of the same name, The Reluctant Fundamentalist chronicles the journey of a young banker and the rampant Islamophobia that he faces in a post-9/11 America. Being specifically targeted as a criminal and suspect, the troubled protagonist realizes the cracks within the notion of the American Dream.

While The Reluctant Fundamentalist is a political thriller unlike the sci-fi thriller that Encounter is, both movies feature Riz Ahmed. Just like the former movie’s Changez Khan, Malik Khan is involuntarily searched by a policeman and then held at gunpoint by a white supremacist. Even though he served America as a Marine, his patriotism is always put into question.

1 Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1976)- Available On Kanopy

A timeless body horror classic adapted from Jack Finney’s novel The Body Snatchers, Invasion of the Body Snatchers involves the arrival of an alien species that replaces humans with their emotionless duplicates. Even though it is a remake of a 1956 movie, Phillip Kaufman’s version has endured on as the more superior take on the original source material.

The titular “body snatchers” are a far cry from cliched sci-fi beasts and make for stealthy and intimidating threats. Similar extraterrestrial enemies are hinted in Encounter right from the start with alien microbes taking over human bodies and turning them into infected zombie-like creatures.
