Natural disaster movies are part of a genre that can be perceived as cheesy and over-the-top, or action-packed and terrifying. Fearing Mother Nature will wreak havoc on unsuspecting humans is something to be afraid of because it can happen in real life. That’s why directors continue to make movies like this and streaming platforms, like Amazon Prime Video.

After scouring through the unlimited list of binge-worthy disaster movies, there are two handfuls that stand out above the rest. If viewers have been searching for the best natural disaster movies across streaming channels, they need not look any further because Amazon Prime has the goods.

10 The Happening: 5.0 (2008)

2008’s The Happening got a lot of flak for the lackluster performances and storyline, but M. Night Shyamalan’s movie about killer plants isn’t totally bad. The movie stars Mark Wahlberg, Zooey Deschanel, and John Leguizamo and centers on an east-coast town suddenly experiencing trange events. Some viewers could categorize this as a weird sci-fi movie, but because (spoiler) it seems as if the plants and trees have something to do with people acting bizarrely, it falls in the natural disaster movie.

Wahlberg plays a high school science teacher named Elliot Moore, who is going through a rough patch with his wife, Alma (Deschanel). After being alerted of the strange happenings, Moore and his wife, along with his friend Julian (Leguizamo), head for safety without really knowing what or who the threat is. The Happening might not be one of Mark Wahlberg’s best movies, but it isn’t so shabby either.

9 Landfall: 5.3 (2017)

When a young Australian couple is trapped after three mysterious fugitives invade their home, they must figure out how to survive while also worrying about a horrendous tropical cyclone storm is looming closer. The fugitive aren’t empty-handed though, they have a strange icebox with unknown contents inside, making the situation even worse.

The storyline is interesting, there are several plot twists, and overall the movie has a great cast. Landfall is an under-the-radar movie that viewers won’t want to miss.

8 The Core: 5.5 (2003)

The early-2000s was a great time for successful movies across all genres, but perhaps one of the best includes The Core, an action-adventure sci-fi movie with a few recognizable faces. Starring Aaron Eckhart, Hilary Swank, Stanley Tucci, Brian Greenwood, they play a crew assigned to travel to the Earth’s core to set off a nuclear device.

The Earth’s core has stop spinning, which sets off a series of disasters happening worldwide. The team hopes that the explosion will push the core into motion again, but things don’t necessarily go as planned like any other disaster movie. The special effects are entertaining, and with a cast like this, The Core is an awe-inspiring movie to watch.

7 Hard Rain: 5.9 (1998)

Directed by Mikael Salomon, Hard Rain stars Morgan Freeman, Christian Slater, and Randy Quaid and centers Tom (Slater) and his Uncle Charlie (Edward Asner), who are drivers of an armored truck chock-full of three million dollars. The damn they need to cross is shut down due to the current weather situation, which has flooded the area. The duo is attacked by a man named Jim (Freeman), who wants what he has.

After escaping, Tom hides in a local cemetery and is knocked out. When he wakes up, he realizes he’s in a room that’s filling up with water, as the flood outside becomes worse and worse. Hard Rain is not entirely about a massive flood but is filled with action and drama considered an all-around good movie.

6 Doomsday Book: 5.9 (2012)

Doomsday Book is a South-Korean movie composed of several stories about the apocalypse or natural disasters. While all three chapters are fantastic, the final chapter named “Happy Birthday” is the one with a killer meteor. A little girl named Min-seo (Ji-hee Jim) accidentally damaged her father’s billiard ball and is determined to replace it in secret. She decides to order a new one online and stumbles upon a strange website where she places an order.

Soon after, a mysterious meteor heads toward Earth, which leaves humankind to flee underground.

5 Just A Breath Away: 5.9 (2018)

Parisian scientists Mathieu (Romain Duris) and Anna (Olga Kurylenko) have a daughter named Sarah (Fantine Harduin), who has developed a strange auto-immune syndrome. This forces the small family to live in sealed-off capsules while the couple searches for a cure. After Mathieu returns from Canada with new information about their daughter’s illness, an earthquake hits the area, causing a strange gas to release from underneath the ground. Anyone who is caught in its path will die, and fortunately, Mathieu and Anna’s apartment is tall enough to stand above it.

While their worries are seemingly subdued, the battery power in Anna’s capsule is slowly fading, and without it, she could die. The cast, story, and overall tone of Just a Breath Away is excellent and is a thrilling ride from start to finish.

4 It’s A Disaster: 6.4 (2013)

Todd Berger’s film, It’s a Disaster, isn’t like any other natural disaster film viewers have seen. The movie fixes drama and comedy with a huge plot twist at the end. Starring Rachel Boston, America Ferrera, Kevin M. Brennen, Jeff Grace, David Cross, and Julia Stiles, the film centers on a monthly brunch that several couples have together. While it’s obvious the couples present have issues, it’s not the biggest problem in the movie. A man arrives at the door to inform the group that a mysterious attack has taken over the city.

Unsure of what to do, they all stay inside the house to wait it out while becoming unhinged in the process. It’s a Disaster is funny, uncomfortable at times, and even dramatic here and there. Still, overall, it’s a movie that not only deserves a second look but an initial one, as well.

3 The Day After Tomorrow: 6.4 (2004)

One of the most well-known natural disaster movies is Roland Emmerich’s 2003 movie, The Day After Tomorrow. It offers a stellar cast that includes Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal, Emmy Rossum, and Sela Ward. It centers on a paleoclimatologist named Jack Hall (Quaid) who discovers something strange while in Antarctica. After an ice sheet breaks down in the tundra, it causes a divide in the ground, which triggers a massive climate shift that will push the planet into the next ice age.

After relentless concerns to the Vice President (Kenneth Welsh) and the government, Hall realizes that his son Sam (Gyllenhaal) is in New York City, states away, from him and his wife. After devastating natural disasters start to occur around the world, Hall knows it’s up to him and a small team of colleagues to save his son. The Day After Tomorrow doesn’t necessarily have a happy ending, it’s an exciting move to watch with a little bit of romance, and awe-inspiring cinematography moments. Even though The Day After Tomorrow isn’t one of Dennis Quaid’s best movies of his career, it’s still a solid movie for a Friday night.

Even though Mad Max: Fury Road received a lot of hype, the storyline originally started in 1979. Starring Mel Gibson, the action-adventure movie centers on a dystopian world in the near future. Mad Max (Gibson) tells his version of the story filled with barren lands, vicious criminals, and other grisly events that set Max off into a fury filled with revenge. Directed by George Miller, Mad Max, and the installments that followed are among his best movies he’s directed in his career.

Amazon Prime Video’s best-rated natural disaster movie to watch is Lars von Trier’s 2011 movie, Melancholia. The film revolves around two sisters, Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg), who are in an opposite state of mind. On the night of Justine’s wedding, she finds herself doubting her happiness while celebrating the best day of her life. While her wedding is expensive and lavish, this all means nothing compared to what is about to happen to the planet.

A blue planet named Melancholia is headed towards Earth, and while Claire is trying to keep it together for her sister’s sake, she’s concerned about the impending doom that’s about to rain down on all of them.
