Sam Wilson has gone from a supporting character in Captain America movies to a hero who co-headlined his own Disney+ series and is preparing for his first solo movie. That is very similar to his journey in Marvel Comics as well. Sam was The Falcon, a sidekick to Captain America and then four decades later, he became Captain America.
Along the way, Sam Wilson stories in comics showed a hero that operated differently than the big guns of the Avengers. Sam was a street-level hero that cared more about protecting kids from gangs than fighting invading aliens. Sam also proved that he was reliable enough to carry the shield but pure enough to not bow down when he knew the government was wrong.
10 The Coming Of… The Falcon
If anyone wants to read Sam Wilson stories in Marvel Comics, there is no better place to start than the beginning with “The Coming Of… The Falcon. This story runs from Captain America #109 to 119 and it introduces everything fans love about Wilson.
Captain America heads to an island to stop Red Skull and that is where he meets Falcon, who was abducted and taken there. Sam was given the wings and the Falcon powers to communicate with birds. Red Wing, the bird, appears here for the first time and this is where Sam Wilson becomes a hero.
9 Falcon Miniseries (1983)
For much of the start of his career in Marvel Comics, Falcon was just a sidekick character for Captain America. That all changed in 1983 when Marvel released a Falcon miniseries by Jim Owsley and Paul Smith. This was the first time that a Sam Wilson story showed him working on his own.
This arc had him return to his home and when he witnesses a peaceful march end up with some of the protestors dead, he sets out to show the world that he is a hero to everyone – even those the government and police don’t care to protect.
8 American Psycho
While Sam Wilson was almost always a hero in Marvel Comics, there was a story in 2005 where his loyalty was called into question. This occurred in Captain America and The Falcon #13 and 14 from Christopher Priest and Dan Jurgens in 2005.
Through much of this series, Sam is getting involved in criminal activities when something happens that reverts him back to his pre-hero way of life. As one of Captain America’s biggest allies, Steve tries to stop him, but can’t and when someone shoots the Avenger, Sam snaps out of it and he sets out to make his old friend proud.
7 The Burden Of Dreams
The Marvel Civil War storyline not only destroyed several relationships in the comics, but it also killed Captain America. Despite surrendering, a gunman killed Steve Rogers before he could stand trial for his crimes. After this, Bucky Barnes became the new Captain America when Tony Stark honored Rogers’ final wish.
“The Burden of Dreams” started in Captain America #31 and was where Bucky learned that Doctor Faustus was involved in Steve’s death, and with Sam Wilson by his side, set out to avenge his death while setting up Bucky as the next Cap.
6 The Two Americas
In 2010, Captain America and Falcon were back together again. While the title has two characters names in it, this series mostly focuses on Sam Wilson for the first arc, consisting of four issues. While Falcon is trying to save people in Cuba, a very different and ruthless Captain America shows up.
Of course, this isn’t Steve Rogers, who finally shows up in the second issue to help Falcon and rekindle their partnership. That leaves the rest of this arc with Sam Wilson trying to help Captain America regain his status as the country’s best hero.
5 Hydra Ascendant
Steve Rogers had to step down from his role as Captain America when he aged rapidly and became an old man. He decided that someone he trusted needed to stop up to become the new Captain America and Steve chose Sam Wilson. This led to All-New Captain America in 2015.
“Hydra Ascendant” was the first Sam Wilson story as Captain America. This threw Sam into the fire, where he had to team with Nomad and face a ton of powerful Captain America villains, including Hydra, Sin, Baron Blood, and more. This was where Sam proved he was worthy of the title.
4 Not My Captain America
“Not My Captain America” was the first storyline in the new Captain America: Sam Wilson comic book series. This Sam Wilson story is collected in Captain America: Sam Wilson #1-6 and it shows how hard it was for him to take on the role with the public against him.
Throughout the story, fewer and fewer people accepted Sam, taking up the slogan, “not my Captain America.” As with the best Sam Wilson stories, this one didn’t flinch when looking at racism in America and the resistance to change.
3 Standoff
Sam Wilson continued to come into his own as Captain America when Captain America: Sam Wilson #7-8 saw him teaming with not one, but two other Captain Americas to battle villains. These were Bucky Barnes and Steve Rogers and the
“Standoff” saw Sam Wilson turn his back on S.H.I.E.L.D. when they decided to create their own Cosmic Cube and he refused to keep it covered up. Sam proved here that even though he was Captain America, he didn’t answer to anyone but the people he swore to protect.
2 Take Flight
After Sam Wilson gave up his role as Captain America after Secret Invasion, he reverted back to Falcon and set out to make his own way once again. For much of the event series, Sam kept low and helped people escape America for their own safety. Now, with this series, he returned to the streets.
While Sam Wilson worked hard as Captain America to fight for the country, in “Take Flight,” the first story from the new Falcon comic book series, he went back to being a street-level hero, stopping gang violence and helping the people most heroes ignored.
1 Falcon And Winter Soldier
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was released in 2020 and was a way for Marvel to prepare fans for the 2021 Disney+ series with the two heroes fighting side-by-side. This was also a great buddy cop series, and while Falcon and Bucky are not as consistently entertaining as Bucky and Hawkeye, this still provided a great look at the odd couple.
Created by Derek Landy and Federico Vicentini, an assassination attempt on Winter Soldier had Bucky calling Sam Wilson for help and the two sought out the new leader of Hydra to stop them before they could fully reorganize.
