As somewhat prophesized in one of the science fiction films ever made, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, the year 2001 proved to be a fecund time for ambitious sci-fi cinema. Even Kubrick’s longtime pet project, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, was released in 2001 when the director handed the film over to his friend Steven Spielberg prior to his untimely death in 1999.

In addition to sentient robots of the future, the year 2001 saw everything from benevolent and malevolent aliens, dystopic cityscapes, lost underwater empires, reanimated skeletons, to perilous missions in outer space, mega-monster mash-ups, a talking 6-foot bunny rabbit, and a whole lot more.

10 Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within – 6.4

In the fully animated adaptation of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, Dr. Aki (Ming-Na Wren) is a prodigious scientist in charge of thwarting a malefic alien attack on Earth in the year 2065. When she is infected with extraterrestrial DNA, Aki must find a cure, as well.

In a twisted story too complex to describe in a sentence or two, Vanilla Sky follows David Aames (Tom Cruise), a successful publishing tycoon whose life is entirely upended when his former lover dies in a car crash that also leaves him horrifically disfigured. Reconstructed through a technological mask that allows for lucid dreaming, David begins to lose his grip on reality while pursuing his new lover, Sofia (Cruz).

7 The Lost Skeleton Of Cadavra – 7.0

Made on a shoestring budget of $40,000, Larry Blamire’s The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra is an outright homage to cheaply made 1950s sci-fi B-movies.

Set in 1961, the story traces an inept scientist, Dr. Paul Armstrong (Blamire), and his oblivious wife, Betty (Fay Masterson), as they attempt to save Earth from two aliens from planet Marva named Kro-Bar ( Andrew Parks) and Lattis (Susan McConnell). As the two aliens search for an element called Atmosphereum to return home, the Armstrongs battle a vicious telekinetic skeleton.

6 The American Astronaut – 7.1

Written and directed by Cory McAbee, The American Astronaut is an absurd comedic-sci-fi-musical that follows Samuel Curtis (McAbee), a U.S. space traveler out to return the remains of a deceased human being named Johnny R. to his mournful family.

Along the way, Samuel encounters such odd characters as The Blueberry Pirate (Joshua Taylor), Body Suit (James Ransone), The Real Live Girl, The Boy Who Actually Saw Woman’s Breast (Greg Russell Cook), and his arch-enemy, Professor Hess (Rocco Sisto).

Set in the futuristic dystopian city of Metropolis, ruler Duke Red (Taro Ishida) is ready to unveil his prized AI robot girl, Tima (Yuka Imoto). When Red Duke’s menacing adopted son Rock (Koki Okada) sets out to destroy Tima and all forms of automation, she befriends the kindhearted Kenichi (Kei Kobayashi), who helps her traverse the metropolitan maze and defeat enemies along the way.

3 A.I. Artificial Intelligence – 7.2

Despite the facade of a happy ending, Steven Spielberg’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence is a deceitfully disturbing sci-fi tale. The Pinocchio-like story follows David (Haley Joel Osment), a superintelligent artificial robot who wants nothing more than to become a real human boy.

To obtain his desire, David follows his unloving adoptive mother Monica (Frances O’Connor) on an eye-opening journey of self-discovery as he’s consigned into a sordid “Flesh Fair.” With the help of his best friend, Teddy (Jack Angel), and Gigolo Joe (Jude Law), David’s wish to become a real boy gets trapped in an eternal dream.

2 K-PAX – 7.4

Unlike most films in the subgenre, K-PAX is an uplifting sci-fi movie for the entire family to enjoy. The story revolves around PROT (Kevin Spacey), a patient at a psychiatric facility who convincingly claims to be an alien from the planet K-PAX.

When everyone dismisses his story, psychiatrist Dr. Mark Powell (Jeff Bridges) takes the time to listen to PROT’s story, challenge the particulars, and keep an open mind about what the patient claims to be true. Over time, PROT and Powell grow closer, even when the doctor questions his own sense of judgment.

1 Donnie Darko – 8.0

Written and directed by Richard Kelly, Donnie Darko is a brilliant mixture of sci-fi mystery, high-school comedy, and coming-of-age romance. The story centers on Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal), a disturbed but brilliant teenager prone to sleepwalking fits and eerie hallucinations.
