Considering it is one of the longest-running shows of all-time, The Simpsons is a perfect show to revisit again and again while still making fans laugh. The show is packed with hilarious lines that people quote endlessly, but some of the funniest moments come from the show’s brilliant sight gags.
While some people think the show is far past its prime, Season 5 shows just how great The Simpsons was in its heyday. There are so many memorable images from the season that still inspire laughter all these years later.
10 Home Security System
When a cat burglar begins stealing from all the homes in Springfield, everyone becomes extra vigilant about their own home security. Professor Frink even comes up with a state-of-the-art system.
He brings along a small model of the home which, when the security system is tripped, the house sprouts robotic legs and runs away from the danger. But after taking a few steps, the home trips and bursts into flames.
9 Hungry Elephant
The Simpsons have added a lot of temporary members to their family over the years, but an elephant was quite an outlandish addition. Bart wins the massive animal who proves to be as poorly-behaved as Bart himself. It even tries to eat people on several occasions.
But Bart and the elephant quickly grow attached. So Bart can sleep outside with his pet, the elephant lifts Bart into the treehouse and tucks him into bed with his trunk and wraps the trunk around him for a hug. The elephant then picks Bart up and shoves him in his mouth.
8 Hans Moleman’s Gremlin
The Treehouse of Horror specials are always a treat during the Halloween season. One of the best segments is a riff on the classic Twilight Zone episode “Terror at 20,000 Feet.” While on the bus ride to school, Bart spots a monster trying to sabotage the vehicle.
When Bart first sees the monster, he quickly tells Otto there is a gremlin on the side of the bus. Otto looks and sees Hans Moleman driving his Gremlin car. Otto rams Hans who drives off the road before coming to a gentle stop. The car then proceeds to randomly explode into pieces.
7 The Inanimate Carbon Rod
After Homer is passed over for Employee of the Month in favor of an inanimate carbon rod, he looks for ways to get respect. He soon joins NASA to join real astronauts on a space mission which, of course, goes terribly wrong.
When the shuttle doors break open, Homer manages to secure them and save the day. Back on Earth, he is met by the press and holds up the carbon rod in victory. The scene then cuts to the rod on the cover of Time Magazine instead of Homer.
6 Everyone Laughs At Barney
“Homer’s Barbershop Quartet” reveals that Homer once enjoyed a brief level of fame with a musical quartet known as The Be Sharps. The band consists of Homer, Apu, Principal Skinner, and Chief Wiggum. However, Wiggum is soon replaced by Barney when he is heard singing beautifully when passed out in the bathroom.
During a press conference as the band rises to fame, a reporter asks Barney how he was discovered. He says he was found on the bathroom floor and everybody laughs, presuming he is joking. It then cuts to Barney with a single tear falling from his eye.
5 Blue-Haired Freak
Wanting to embrace her wilder side, Marge has a night out with a rebellious neighbor, Ruth. Homer goes to look for her and ends up in a ride-along with Chief Wiggum. Coincidentally, they come upon Marge and Ruth and Ruth makes a run for it since she stole her car from her ex-husband.
Wiggum gives the description of the assailant, inkling “a lot of blue hair. Homer fails to make the connection and says they should like a freak, imagining a strange monster. But with the car goes over a bump, the monster morphs into Marge.
4 Missing Milhouse
The episode “Rosebud” is a hilarious take on the Citizen Kane story with Mr. Burns depressed and searching for his childhood teddy bear to fill the void. Given his immense resources, he goes to great lengths to find the bear.
As Smithers organizes the massive hunt for the teddy, he is shown placing photos of it on milk cartons and, in doing so, covers up the photos of Milhouse who is apparently missing as well.
3 Good Omen?
In a rare moment of giving an effort, Bart joins the boy scouts and actually excels at it. Homer becomes jealous of all the time he is spending with scoutmaster Ned Flanders, so he insists on coming along for the father-son rafting trip.
Homer soon causes their raft to drift out to sea with no sign of rescue. As things begin to get desperate, Ned gets optimistic when spots a seagull. He explains they remain close to shore, only coming out to die. The seagull then falls from the sky and into the water.
2 Homer In The Hedge
Ned Flanders has always been nothing but a nice neighbor to Homer and his family. However, Homer continuously treats Ned terribly and avoids be friendly with him at all. But after spending some time with Flanders, Homer starts to see he is a good guy.
Unfortunately, Homer quickly wears out his welcome with Ned, seemingly like a looming threat. As Ned and his family ready for a trip, Homer creepily emerges from the hedges and asks to join them. Ned makes an excuse and Homer just as creepily goes back into the hedges without breaking eye contact.
1 Sideshow Bob Vs The Rakes
“Cape Fear” is regarded as one of the funniest episodes in the entire series, and this one gag has gone done as an iconic Simpsons moment.
The episode follows Sideshow Bob as he is released from prison and looks to take revenge on Bart. When the family goes into witness protection, Bob attaches himself to the bottom of their car to follow them. After a painful car ride, Bob crawls out from beneath the car and immediately steps on a rake which smacks him in the face. Then it happens again. And again. And again. Then we zoom out to see Bob is inexplicably surrounded by rakes.
