Origin stories tend to make for the least rewatchable superhero movies, because in addition to following familiar story beats, the heroes don’t actually gain the powers and jump into action until somewhere in the middle of the movie.
The most acclaimed superhero films, from The Dark Knight to Thor: Ragnarok, tend to be sequels that can dive right into the action with the pesky origins out of the way. However, in the hands of a filmmaker like Christopher Nolan or Sam Raimi, superhero origin stories can still make for great movies.
10 X-Men: First Class (2011)
After X-Men: The Last Stand was lambasted by critics and underperformed at the box office, 20th Century Fox took a step back and rebooted the franchise with X-Men: First Class, a 1960s-set prequel chronicling the origins of Charles Xavier’s school for mutants and his love-hate rivalry with Magneto.
The plot’s inclusion of the Cuban Missile Crisis was an interesting choice, and it was great to finally see the mutants’ yellow spandex suits on the big screen. From James McAvoy to Michael Fassbender to Jennifer Lawrence, the new cast also incorporated some of the greatest actors working today.
9 Batman (1989)
Tim Burton’s Batman was one of the early hits that solidified superhero movies as a reliable blockbuster genre. After Warner Bros. was inundated with complaint letters following Michael Keaton’s casting, he proved with understated nuance and dry humor that he was the perfect actor to portray Bruce Wayne. Additionally, there’s a refreshing economy in the movie’s telling of the Bat’s origins.
The opening scene jumps right into the action, and from there, the origin story is peppered throughout the film in flashbacks before the big plot twist reveals the Joker to be Bruce’s parents’ killer. This was a controversial change from the traditional Joe Chill, but it helped to tie the main hero-villain conflict into the backstory.
8 Deadpool (2016)
After his debut in X-Men Origins: Wolverine removed everything that made his character great, Ryan Reynolds finally got to make a faithful Deadpool movie in 2016. The movie follows two parallel storylines: the Merc with a Mouth’s origin story, and his present-day quest to exact revenge against the sadistic scientist responsible for said origin story.
Due to ‘Pool’s ability to talk directly to the audience and jump all over the story timeline, Deadpool is a unique kind of superhero origin movie – and wildly entertaining.
7 Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (2018)
Just when fans were losing faith in Sony’s ability to spearhead its own Spider-Man movie franchise, it delivered Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, one of the greatest comic book movies of all time and a masterpiece of animation. The movie follows the insecure Miles Morales after he’s bitten by a radioactive spider and has to grapple with the pressure of taking on the “Spidey” mantle.
By the end of the movie, Miles has officially taken the torch. Into the Spider-Verse brilliantly contrasts Jake Johnson’s Peter B. Parker, a veteran crimefighter who’s become burned out with superheroism, with Shameik Moore’s Miles, a bright-eyed optimist just getting used to his superpowers.
6 Black Panther (2018)
T’Challa had already taken up the titular superhero mantle before the events of his first solo movie, Black Panther, as seen in Captain America: Civil War, but Ryan Coogler’s groundbreaking movie followed the Wakandan monarch on a classic hero’s journey that saw him truly become a superhero.
When his throne is challenged by his long-lost cousin Erik Killmonger, T’Challa is stripped of his powers and left for dead. His heroic endeavor to reclaim his throne provides him with a beautifully action-packed origin as both a superhero and a king.
5 Iron Man (2008)
Jon Favreau kickstarted the Marvel Cinematic Universe with 2008’s Iron Man. Before the movie hit theaters, Robert Downey Jr. was considered a risky leading man and Iron Man was seen as a B-tier character. After it hit theaters, Downey quickly became one of the most bankable stars in the world and Iron Man became as iconic and recognizable as Batman or Spider-Man.
Produced at the height of the Bush administration’s War on Terror, Iron Man recontextualized Tony Stark’s origin story from decades-old comics to incorporate the contemporary conflict in the Middle East.
4 Wonder Woman (2017)
After Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman was introduced in Batman v Superman, Patty Jenkins gave the character a perfect origin with a fish-out-of-water story set during World War I. Diana is drawn into the wider world when an American pilot crash-lands off the coast of her hidden island home of Themyscira.
With scenes like the No Man’s Land sequence and a villain that represents the concept of war itself, Jenkins made Wonder Woman one of the greatest superhero movies in recent memory.
3 Batman Begins (2005)
After the disappointment of Batman & Robin almost killed the franchise entirely, Christopher Nolan revitalized the Caped Crusader’s big-screen adventures – and the superhero movie genre as a whole – with the gritty realism of Batman Begins.
Batman Begins digs deeper into the Bat’s origins than any movie before it. Instead of skipping from Thomas and Martha Wayne’s murders to Batman’s vigilante career, Batman Begins filled in the interim, explaining where he got his fighting abilities and arsenal of gadgets from.
2 Spider-Man (2002)
Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man is the gold standard for modern superhero origin movies. Raimi nailed both aspects of Spidey’s origin. It briskly covers the story of Spidey being bitten by a radioactive spider and acquiring superpowers, but it also develops a tangible father-son dynamic with Cliff Robertson’s wise old Uncle Ben that culminates in his heartbreaking death.
With authentic geekiness and genuine pathos, Tobey Maguire’s take on Peter Parker was so pitch-perfect that not even Tom Holland has managed to surpass his performance.
1 Superman (1978)
Richard Donner brought a surprising degree of realism to Kal-El’s origin story in 1978’s Superman: The Movie. It obviously takes place within a comic book world, but Donner infused the film with refreshingly earnest quality, despite it featuring an alien who draws superhuman abilities from the Sun.
The movie acts as a massively satisfying biopic of the Man of Steel, covering the destruction of Krypton, Clark Kent’s upbringing in Smallville, his relationship with Lois Lane, and the beginnings of his superhero career.
