The 10 Cringiest OneLiners In The MCU

Part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s winning formula, along with the charming superheroes and explosive action sequences, is the unique humor. Fans will often hear the heroes joking around about time travel movies and pop stars, and pop culture references have become a huge part of the MCU package, but they don’t always land.

The good jokes in the universe massively outweigh the bad, but the bad one-liners stick out like a sore thumb. Between Doctor Strange listing rappers, Ant-Man requesting orange slices on the battlefield, and a weird debate over Ben & Jerry’s, the MCU sometimes comes off a little desperate when squeezing out one-liners.

“Who Are You Fighting Now? Gandalf?” — Bucky Barnes.

The 10 Cringiest OneLiners In The MCU

The MCU loves throwing pop-culture references into their movies whenever they can. And it didn’t take long for the first one to show up in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. In their very first conversation Sam and Bucky have with each other, when trying to be clever, Bucky asks Sam if he’s fighting Gandalf.

It then evolves from a cringy one-liner into a cringy conversation, and Bucky brags that he read The Hobbit when it was first released back in 1937. As far as brags go, that has to be one of the weirdest.

“Just Wong? Like Adele? Or Aristotle. Drake. Bono. Eminem.” — Stephen Strange.

When Steven Strange is first introduced to Wong in Doctor Strange, the doctor can’t seem to grasp the concept that his name is just one word. He then rattles off a bunch of musicians (and the philosopher Aristotle) who go by one name. And later on, he even refers to Wong as Beyonce.

It not only stands out because of how cringey it is, but it’s so out of character too. Of course, people can enjoy multiple genres of music, but it’s completely unlikely that Dr. Strange would listen to or ever think to reference the likes of Drake or Eminem. For as well-written as Doctor Strange is, it’s the perfect example of dialogue in the MCU being written for a cheap laugh.

“I Hope You And Banner Aren’t Playing ‘Hide The Zucchini'” — Tony Stark.

The 10 Cringiest OneLiners In The MCU

It’s hard to explain this one-liner while trying to preserve the innocence of younger fans, and it will surely have had kids awkwardly asking their parents what Mr. Stark meant. The line in Avengers: Age of Ultron is the most colorful but cringiest one-liners in the whole of the MCU.

The line is colorful not just because he’s referring to the Hulk being green but because he’s referring to a certain body part of his being green. As Tony Stark tells this to Bruce Banner and Natasha, who were dating at the time, it’s easy to figure out what he’s getting at, but it’s a little too far for the family-friendly movie, even by Stark’s standards.

“I Bet You Look Terrible In Them Now.” — Steve Rogers.

In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Natasha Romanoff gives an emotional monologue about how she was shot in the stomach. The monologue ends when she lifts up her top and shows Steve Rogers a nasty scar left by the bullet. It’s up there with the best monologues in the MCU, but any emotional weight of the speech is ruined by Steve.

Once Natasha finishes speaking, he sarcastically remarks that he thinks she’d look terrible in bikinis because of the scar. It’s an unintentionally awkward moment for the audience, and it turns what was a heartfelt scene into a moment full of oddly uncomfortable sexual tension.

“Hunka Hulka Burning Fudge Is Our Favorite.” — Wong.

Though Steven Strange is usually the one to spit out cringey one-liners, the doctor’s sidekick is no stranger to cringe-worthy dialogue either. This line comes in the midst of one of the cringiest, misjudged conversations in the whole superhero series, as Tony, Bruce, Wong, and Strange are all deep into a debate about their favorite Ben and Jerry’s flavor.

Everything about the conversation in Avengers: Infinity War, and this one-liner specifically, is so bizarre. Bruce Banner just smashed through Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum and is trying to explain to them about Thanos, but that’s put on pause so they can all discuss ice-creams named after them.

“You Changed Your Name From Shang To Shaun?” — Katy.

There’s a lot of humor surrounding Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Whether it’s all of the hilarious Shang-Chi memes or the banter between Shang and Katy, the 2021 flick is as much of a comedy as it is a martial arts movie.

However, as funny as Shang and Katy are together, none of the jokes land in the airplane scene. When Shang reveals to Katy his real name, Katy jumps between not being able to pronounce it and making fun of it. It happens in almost every MCU movie, when somebody makes a quip about the hero’s name, but it feels forced in Shang-Chi.

“Dance-Off, Bro.” — Peter Quill.

If any of the movies in the MCU could be classed as a comedy, it’s Guardians of the Galaxy, as the whole screenplay is made up of one one-liner after the next. For the most part, all of the jokes land, except for when Peter yells, “Dance-off, bro” to Ronin. Some Redditors think Star-Lord isn’t funny, and this one-liner could be the reason why.

The one-liner is so misplaced and it made so many viewers wince, as Peter sounds like he’s at a frat party and has just done a keg stand. That might be his personality, but who would act like that in front of Ronan the Accuser? What makes it even more cringe-worthy is that Ronan is so dumbed down that he’s actually fooled by Quill.

“Does Anybody Have Any Orange Slices?” — Scott Lang.

The 10 Cringiest OneLiners In The MCU

One of the things the MCU is often criticized for is the lack of stakes in the movies, with the only two exceptions being Infinity War and Endgame. And this one-liner in Captain America: Civil War is a perfect example of a goofy one-liner ruining what little stakes were in place. In the infamous airport scene, there were extremely powerful superheroes going up against each other. However, when Scott Lang gets defeated and is laying down writhing in pain, he jokingly asks if anybody has any orange slices.

The joke is that soccer moms often bring orange slices to games for the children because they’re great at helping kids rehydrate. It doesn’t land here, it weirdly makes audiences perceive Scott as childish, and he doesn’t even say it to anybody in particular, just randomly saying it out loud with nobody for it to bounce off.

“I’m Made Of Rocks, As You Can See. But Don’t Let That Intimidate You. You Don’t Need To Be Afraid Unless You’re Made Of Scissors.” — Korg.

The 10 Cringiest OneLiners In The MCU

Korg is far from the most powerful character in Ragnarok, but what he lacks in power he more than makes up for in comedy. The funniest moment comes in Endgame when he’s playing online video games in New Asgard. However, when audiences first meet him, it gets off to a (quite literally) rocky start.

When Korg and Thor first meet, Korg spits out this jumbled line. Not only is it so cheesy, but it’s such a long one-liner that it’s barely even a one-liner. And it’s a jumbled word salad that takes so long to get to the point too. It’s made even worse when he quickly follows up by saying, “Just a little rock-paper-scissors joke for you.”

“Language.” — Steve Rogers.

The MCU has loads of cringey dialogue and one-liners, but Avengers: Age of Ultron includes enough of them for the whole series. Ironically, the most offensive of them all is when Steve Rogers is offended when Tony yells, “S—!”

What’s worse is that Steve makes a point of calling Tony out on his foul language in the middle of a battlefield, as the whole of the Avengers is fighting Hydra agents in Sakovia. However, just as if he tripped up, Steve styled it out, and he did so by saying it repeatedly until audiences finally got on board with it. And it has now become a brilliant running gag.
