Some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s mightiest villains also happen to be just as funny as they are terrifying, if not more so.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has adapted some of the comic book company’s most memorable villains. Yet some of them, despite being nefarious, cruel, and cunning are also incredibly funny. Although they might not be deliberately hilarious, the characters have been written in such a way that audiences have come to love them.
Thanks to their humor and charm, many of these villains have ended up down a redemptive path, with fans warmly accepting their heroic side. Others find great comedy in the pain that they inflict and the chaos that they cause and crack quite a few one-liners along the way to demonstrate their malicious glee.
10 Loki
Loki’s life in the MCU began as a through and through villain. While he was very few comedic beats in his first outing, in each installment of the Thor trilogy since and later in both the Avengers films and his own Disney+ series, Loki has demonstrated that he can crack jokes with the best of them.
His sarcastic and dry wit, combined with his complete ego and maniacal nature has created the perfect blend of comedy one-liners which he continues to jab at even the most minute of irritations. Throughout Loki, the character becomes a little more jovial and takes joy in utilizing his articulate vocabulary to form the kinds of jokes a wordsmith could be proud of.
9 The Grandmaster
The brother to The Collector, The Grandmaster comes from a far wackier side of the galaxy than most villains introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the comic book iteration is perhaps not quite as goofy on paper, here the character is portrayed with charm and incredible charisma.
The Grandmaster is still manipulative and a dictator in every sense, but his leadership is harnessed further by his quick thinking wordplay as he mocks and ridicules the subjects that bow down to him. Grandmaster can quip his way out of most situations, with his curiosity and small talk somehow making him one of the MCU’s funniest foes.
8 Nebula
As the adopted daughter of Thanos and sister to Gamora, Nebula is fully aware that there isn’t really a funny bone in her family. Coming from a life of misery and torture, most of Nebula’s outings in the MCU thus far has been as a snarling villain, before her eventual anti-hero turn.
As the character continues to go on her own arc though she opens up to the Guardians, even beginning to crack jokes through her own sarcastic lens. Her funniest moments come when she’s not meaning to be humorous though, with her literal thinking and vengeful attitude sometimes making her the fool in a situation.
7 Justin Hammer
Justin Hammer might just be the definition of charisma. The character is smarmy and slick; a salesman to the end of his days. Every moment of his life feels as if it’s a pitch, like each passing conversation might be the make or break for his largely successful company.
He dances through the English language and is in many ways a parallel to Tony Stark, who he has tried to match barbs with on a number of occasions. Fans have really come to love this Iron Man villain thanks to his silver tongue and unstoppable ego.
6 M’Baku
M’Baku may not be a villain by the time the credits draw Black Panther to a close but the comic book antagonist known as Man-Ape begins life as a rival to King T’Challa and is portrayed as a merciless warrior who has clear intentions for the future of his beloved Wakanda.
As the story develops though, audiences get to spend more time with M’Baku where it’s revealed that he’s a benevolent leader with a good sense of humor. He takes joy in mocking the outsiders but is loyal when it matters most. His comedy is one of the elements that allowed his shift from villain to hero to feel so natural and his future appearances in the franchise may see him continue on that path.
5 Trevor Slattery
Famously, Iron Man 3 brought audiences one of the most controversial twists in a Marvel movie to date. The terrifying Mandarin of legend was exposed as a British actor who had simply been hired at the behest of a company think tank. Trevor Slattery wasn’t the terrorist movie-goers were expecting yet was absolutely hilarious.
The portrayal of the drug addict and failed theater entertainer was perfect though, as the twist continued to be driven home. There’s nothing scary at all about this washed-up performer, yet Slattery still continues to out-wit both his employers and his aggressors when in a panicking situation.
4 Ivan Vanko
Ivan Vanko shouldn’t have been funny on paper. The vengeful Russian wanted to tear Tony Stark’s life apart and indeed Iron Man himself with his carefully created Whiplash armor. When bouncing off of characters like Justin Hammer though, Vanko proved to be a brilliant straight man.
Fans won’t quickly forget his hilarious need for a bird, which Hammer has specially flown in for him. Although he is a man of blood and grit, his simple and violent way of looking at the world is somehow spun into humorous moments. In a landscape full of wacky and over-the-top characterizations the straight man act is the right paradox to be funny.
3 Helmut Zemo
Baron Zemo is a perfect villain in every capacity but outside of the comic books, Marvel Studios have proven that he can be quite the compelling anti-hero as well. What’s more, the Baron can even be funny! As a man of sophistication, class, and culture, he understands a quality joke.
Not only this though, but the contrast between the terrorist audiences have also seen him be and the nightclub enthusiast is a strange shift for the character. It completely works despite Zemo shifting from snarling at his enemies to some spectacular dancing in quick succession.
2 Quentin Beck
Quentin Beck is quite literally a man of mystery. He doesn’t realize he’s telling a joke, but the idea of Mysterio itself is hilarious. This strange vengeful tale, that combines theatrics with state-of-the-art technology has allowed Beck to become the perfect performer.
In many ways, he replicates both Tony Stark and Justin Hammer and has the humor to back it up. But it’s also a ridiculous sight to see the so-called terrifying ‘big bad’ jump around in ping pong balls and pajamas, hoping to scare off the teenage Spider-Man.
1 Agatha Harkness
Agatha Harkness played the friendly nosey neighbor role brilliantly, utilizing the many sit-com tropes that audiences have come to expect. But Agatha was actually in on the performance meaning that each well-placed joke and slapstick comedy was actually created by her.
Agatha is perhaps the funniest MCU villain of all time, therefore, controlling a successful sitcom in a way that Ultron or Thanos couldn’t possibly conceive of. Even when it’s revealed that it was Harkness all along, the wicked witch still takes pleasure in roasting the newly freed Scarlet Witch and her family.
