The 10 Funniest Scenes From Edgar Wright Movies

With his kinetic editing, razor-sharp comic wit, and pitch-perfect storytelling, Edgar Wright has become one of the most popular filmmakers working today. All of the director’s movies — from the genre-riffing homages of the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End) to his Hollywood efforts Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Baby Driver — have been praised by critics and audiences alike.

The director’s next movie, Last Night in Soho, is a straightforward horror film, but every previous entry on his filmography was a comedy in some capacity, so there are plenty of hilarious scenes to enjoy from Wright’s movies.

10 “You Ain’t Seen Bad Boys II?” In Hot Fuzz

The 10 Funniest Scenes From Edgar Wright Movies

When Danny realizes that his new partner Nicholas has seen a lot more of the Hollywood-style action he joined the police to experience, he bombards him with question after question about sustaining gunshot wounds and taking down bad guys.

He also quizzes him on all the action movies he’s seen and he’s horrified to discover Nicholas has not seen any of the best ones — including Bad Boys II. Danny stops cold and says, “You ain’t seen Bad Boys II?”

9 Gary Tries To Finish His Pint During A Fight In The World’s End

The 10 Funniest Scenes From Edgar Wright Movies

When the jig is up and every android in the pub turns on Gary and his friends, a beautifully choreographed fight breaks out between the guys and their robotic nemeses.

But Gary is more concerned with finishing his pint than joining in the fight. The only problem is, the fight keeps coming to him. Every time he goes to have a sip, he gets swept up in the melee.

8 “Don’t Stop Me Now” In Shaun Of The Dead

The 10 Funniest Scenes From Edgar Wright Movies

Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg’s airtight Shaun of the Dead script didn’t miss an opportunity to pay off a gag. After establishing that the Winchester’s jukebox is “on random” in an early scene when Shaun is reeling from his breakup with Liz, Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now” randomly starts playing as Shaun, Ed, and Liz desperately fend off the zombified pub landlord.

They hit him with pool cues, eventually syncing up with the music, and Barbara and Dianne unconsciously dance along as they watch from the sidelines.

7 Battling Lucas Lee In Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

The 10 Funniest Scenes From Edgar Wright Movies

Arguably Wright’s most underrated film, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World stars Michael Cera as a meek kid who has to fight all his new girlfriend’s exes. One of them is a movie star named Lucas Lee, played by Chris Evans. This was before Evans’ stint as Captain America, but it works even better today as a fun subversion of his Steve Rogers persona.

Lee is brash and obnoxious and Evans affects a deeper voice than usual, but when it actually comes to fighting, he lets his stunt doubles do all the fighting for him while he texts.

6 The Shortest Car Chase In Movie History In Hot Fuzz

The 10 Funniest Scenes From Edgar Wright Movies

When Nicholas and Danny spot a car going way over the speed limit, they blare their sirens and chase them down in a breakneck pursuit. The chase only lasts a few seconds, but Danny is thrilled. “That…was…brilliant.”

Wright set out to helm the shortest car chase in movie history and he succeeded. The gag lands perfectly and it’s followed by the great “Stop writing!” bit with Nicholas’ notebook.

5 Shaun Outlines A Few Survival Plans In Shaun Of The Dead

The 10 Funniest Scenes From Edgar Wright Movies

When a hungover Shaun and Ed finally realize that they’re in the midst of a zombie apocalypse, they start trying to think of a plan for survival. First, they picture bringing Barbara and Liz over to the house and riding it out there before realizing it’s unsafe with broken windows and an unlocked front door.

Eventually, Shaun settles on the perfect plan: pick up Liz and Barbara, kill Philip, go to the Winchester, and wait for this all to blow over. “How’s that for a slice of fried gold?”

4 Andy Takes Everyone’s Shots In The World’s End

The 10 Funniest Scenes From Edgar Wright Movies

Gary King is shocked when he and his friends get to the first pub on their pub crawl and, after he orders five pints, Andy changes the order: “Four pints and a tap water, please.”

However, as the night takes a few surprising turns, like the revelation of a robot invasion, Andy ditches the sobriety and decides to drink. He knocks back all five of the shots Gary ordered in quick succession. Nick Frost plays it hilariously.

3 Michael Myers Masks In Baby Driver

The 10 Funniest Scenes From Edgar Wright Movies

Originally, when Baby drives Bats and his crew to a bank heist in Baby Driver and they all put on their “Michael Myers masks,” two of them were supposed to put on actual Michael Myers masks while only one of them would put on an Austin Powers mask, having mistaken the Halloween villain for actor Mike Myers.

However, since the studio that owns Halloween wouldn’t license out the mask from the movies, Baby Driver had to use three Austin Powers masks instead, which arguably made the gag even funnier.

2 “Never Taken A Shortcut Before?” In Hot Fuzz

The 10 Funniest Scenes From Edgar Wright Movies

There’s a hysterical play on Shaun of the Dead’s fence gag in Hot Fuzz. In Shaun of the Dead, as Shaun prepares to cross over a bunch of garden fences, he says, “What’s the matter, David? Never taken a shortcut before?” Then, the first fence he tries to jump falls over immediately.

When Nicholas and Danny are similarly cutting across some backyards to catch a perp in Hot Fuzz, Nicholas says, “What’s the matter, Danny? Never taken a shortcut before?” This time, he’s hypercompetent, vaulting every fence in his path before somersaulting over the last one. Danny tries to emulate him but crashes through the first fence. Nick Frost actually did this stunt himself. He turned around after the fall to show the audience it was really him.

1 Shaun Is Oblivious To The Apocalypse In Shaun Of The Dead

Early on in Shaun of the Dead, there’s a long tracking shot of Shaun walking around the corner to the convenience store, picking up a couple of things, and going back home.

On the morning after the dead rise from their graves, there’s a very similar tracking shot, except there’s evidence of a grisly widespread disaster — well, it’s evident to everybody except Shaun, who’s dealing with a bad hangover.
