Comedy films are often shorter than dramas or epics but a few hilarious movies actually are among the longest ever made.

When it comes to genres of movies, whether it’s gangster movies or superhero flicks, they all have similar runtimes to other movies in the same genre. Gangster films tend to be sprawling epics, with three-hour runtimes not being rare, and superhero movies generally hover around two hours. But when it comes to comedies, for the most part, they tend not to outstay their welcome, with many of the best comedies of all-time barely surpassing 90 minutes.

However, there are some major outliers when it comes to that rule of thumb. Whether it’s a comedy with so much incredible improv that it’s impossible to cut out or a road trip movie that’s longer than most real-life road trips, there are some comedies that aren’t scared to stretch out the runtime, and in the rarest of cases, be 3.5 hours long!

10 Sex And The City 2 (2010) – 146 Minutes

HBO is making it a tradition of continuing their gold standard TV shows in the movie format, as the Deadwood and Entourage series had movies made after the shows ended, and The Sopranos is getting that treatment with the upcoming The Many Saints of Newark too. But none of them were more successful than Sex and the City, as it has had two movies that were box office hits.

And as what seems to happen with most sequels, Sex and the City 2 is much longer than its predecessor too. But though the movie is two hours and 26 minutes long, it isn’t the most loved by fans. Some felt that too much of the long runtime is spent with cliched stereotypes and underestimating main characters’ intelligence instead of letting the characters grow. There’s a lot the revival could learn from the second movie.

9 Funny People (2009) – 146 Minutes

Though at his core, Adam Sandler is very much a comedy actor, he has also been in a surprising amount of great dramas, and Funny People perfectly walks the fine line between both. Sandler plays a fictional version of himself, a stand-up comedian turned movie star, who finds out he is terminally ill and doesn’t have long left to live.

Given that it’s directed by Judd Apatow, who is known for his overly long comedies, Funny People is one of his rare movies that makes use of the runtime. And there’s so much dialogue that’s clearly improvised that it’s fun watching that comedy actors riff for so long.

8 Bad Boys II (2003) – 147 Minutes

Though there are tons of great action scenes throughout the movie, Bad Boys II is a comedy more than anything, as it’s full of banter between Marcus and Mike, and features tons of completely gross-out humor.

Though the first one was more action than comedy, it’s clear which direction the sequel went in with scenes like Mike hiding in a body bag with a dead body and the shootout with the KKK. And it’s much longer too, as the movie reaches almost two and a half hours.

7 Inherent Vice (2014) – 148 Minutes

Celebrated filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson isn’t exactly known for his comedy chops, as he’s best known for his three-hour melodramatic epic Magnolia, and the only way Inherent Vice is predictably Anderson is by its long runtime.

It’s more of an absurdist comedy than anything, and though there is a clear narrative in which private investigator Doc Sportello is tasked with uncovering an underground heroin trade, most of the scenes work like vignettes. Between Doc visiting ’60s hippie parties, hallucinating by seeing his rival Bigfoot on the TV, and visiting dentists’ offices that look like Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, there’s so much hilariously weird stuff going on.

6 Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (2019) – 161 Minutes

Just like Paul Thomas Anderson, though Quentin Tarantino is known for including his unique sense of humor in his movies, none are more laugh-out-loud funny than Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. Despite being about the tragic murder of Sharon Tate, the movie is hysterical from start to finish, all two hours and 40 minutes of it.

And though some think Hollywood is a big-budget student movie, there are so many moments that only Tarantino could get away with, and nobody could make brutality seem as equally funny and hard-to-watch as the filmmaker.

5 3 Idiots (2009) – 170 Minutes

3 Idiots is one of the few Bollywood movies to breakthrough into the mainstream, as it’s even ranked at 85 on IMDb’s list of the top 250 films of all time. But just like many other Bollywood flicks, the film is long.

Most of the reason why 3 Idiots is so long is due to the fact that there are two different narratives. One that takes place in the present, and one that takes place in the past. As it follows three engineering students struggle with the pressure of the Indian educational system, it’s one of the greatest coming-of-age comedies of all time. And despite its long runtime, every second is more than accounted for.

4 La Dolce Vita (1960) – 174 Minutes

One of the many classics directed by Frederico Fellini, La Dolce Vita won one of the highest accolades a movie can receive, the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. The movie follows Marcello, a gossip magazine journalist, on his quest to find love, and the trials and tribulations that come with it.

The length comes mostly down to its nonlinear structure, as the movie is split up into seven episodes and an epilogue. Though the film is pushing three hours, Fellini had never made another movie anywhere near La Dolce Vita’s length before or after, which might be a testament to how strenuous it is making a movie so ambitiously long.

3 The Wolf Of Wall Street (2013) – 180 Minutes

It’s amazing that over 40 years into his career, Martin Scorsese is still banging out classics, but out of all of his iconic movies, The Wolf of Wall Street is an outlier in the director’s filmography. Whether it’s a genius satire or glorifies bad behavior, there’s no denying how outright funny Wall Street is.

It’s three hours of comedy gold, and it’s partly thanks to the fact that there are so many hilarious actors cast in the movie compared to the director’s other films. Jonah Hill even took a pay cut to work for the director, and so much of the dialogue is improvised, which is another first for Scorsese.

2 Short Cuts (1993) – 188 Minutes

Short Cuts is one of Robert Altman’s best movies, as it comprises the tongue-in-cheek comedy and melodrama that the director is known for. Just like La Dolce Vita more than 20 years before it, Short Cuts is made up of separate episodes, which explains why it’s so long.

Not only that but there are 22 principle characters who all have their own narratives and story arcs. And just like many of Altman’s movies, it takes place in Los Angeles and is a sprawling epic in which the landscape almost makes for the 23rd main character.

1 It’s A Mad Mad Mad Mad World (1963) – 210 Minutes

With a ridiculously long title to match the ridiculously long runtime, It’s A Mad Mad Mad Mad World is a huge 3.5 hours long. It’s the first-ever rat race-type movie, as it sees a group of opportunistic dimwits race across the US to obtain $350,000 of stolen cash.

Despite its overly long runtime, it didn’t stop the movie from being a huge box office success, as it made $60 million when it was released almost 60 years ago. Adjusted for inflation, that would be well over $500 million today. So Mad World isn’t just the longest-running comedy ever made, but it’s also one of the highest-grossing comedies of all time too.
