Christmas is a magical time for many. The lights, the snow, the cold, and the cozy fires all contribute to a magical feeling of warmth and happiness. Of course, the movies also play a large role in this. Christmas movies are undoubtedly hit or miss, with many of the misses being cheaply-produced made-for-TV romances.
But many Christmas movies are made with care and love, and these have become annual classics throughout the years. Unfortunately, not everyone agrees on the quality of said classics, and many cinephiles on Reddit find them horribly overrated.
10 A Christmas Story (1983)
A Christmas Story is an all-time classic filled with many iconic moments and quotes. But it’s not universally beloved. As Reddit user themotherflicker writes, “I never understood the hype and love for the film, and I think it’s because I got to the movie so late, after years of everyone telling me how great it was.”
It could indeed be a case of expectations getting in the way of enjoyment, as A Christmas Story has an enormous reputation as one of the greatest Christmas movies ever. Movies of such caliber are bound to be overrated by some.
9 Elf (2003)
Elf is one of the best Will Ferrell movies, but it’s certainly not for everyone. It’s highly overrated in the mind of Uoneeb, who writes, “Elf, definitely, can’t stand that movie.” While it definitely has charm and a cozy Christmas atmosphere, the enjoyability largely comes down to one’s patience for Will Ferrell.
Ferrell is at his most Ferrell in Elf. His character, Buddy, is very loud, childish, and can be very annoying, not only to his biological father in the movie, but clearly to some audience members. For some, Buddy’s obnoxious personality may be too much to bear.

The Polar Express might be a holiday classic, but it might also be a mess. No one really knows for sure. Reddit user licensedvigilante is not a fan, writing, “I’ve always disliked Polar Express, even as a kid I didn’t get why people liked it and I’m usually a big fan of Christmas movies.”
The Polar Express certainly has its detractors, many of whom bemoan the movie’s odd use of visual effects. The movie looks like a strange mix between reality and CGI. For some, that’s part of the magic. But for others, it’s just too distracting to get behind.

One’s enjoyment of Love Actually comes down to how much they like the main characters. Some people think that aside from its stuffed and overlapping narrative, the movie doesn’t really do anything innovative, and as such, it is forced to get by on the talents of its strong cast.
One now-deleted Reddit user is not a fan, writing, “Love Actually, it’s just weird behavior when you think about. Rick Grimes was pretty much stalking his friend’s wife.” That is indeed one of the movie’s most controversial storylines, and for some, it might ruin the enjoyment of the movie altogether.

The movie has garnered such a strong reputation, owing to both its humor and the fact that it’s played on national TV throughout the Christmas season. Unfortunately, the latter point may have worked against it for some. People have seen this movie (or parts of it) dozens of times, and it’s starting to get a little stale for some viewers.
3 Home Alone (1990)
Home Alone is arguably the ultimate Christmas film – a fact that was backed up by its historic box office performance. But, like everything very popular, the movie has its detractors. Reddit user RazarTuk is not a fan, writing, “Home Alone and Home Alone 2. There’s a reason its brand of ultra-violent slapstick is mostly limited to the realm of cartoons.”
The slapstick humor is exactly what made the movie such a hit in the first place. However, it’s understandable that some would find its cartoonish tone too out of place in a live-action movie.
2 Four Christmases (2008)
Four Christmases was quite a success, grossing over $160 million when released in 2008. Over time, it has developed a solid fan following. But Redditor TactlessCactus hates it with a passion. As they write, “No chemistry between Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon, no humor, and a complete lack of warmth or happiness or anything you’d normally watch a Christmas movie for.”
There’s no denying that Four Christmases is a rather mean-spirited movie, as the characters actively hate spending time with their families. For some, the unlikeable protagonists may prove too large a barrier.
1 Eight Crazy Nights (2002)
It seems that some people believe that Eight Crazy Nights mostly gets by on the talents of Adam Sandler. However, it’s primarily enjoyed by a specific demographic. This is wonderfully summed up by Redditor HalpTheFan, who writes, “I spent many a weekend watching this with friends over Christmas break when I was younger. We’d mainly laugh at the poop jokes and Animated Sandler being a d***. I caught it on TV last year, barely cracked a smile. Just a really odd story and a bunch of strange animation.”
It’s a movie beloved by young boys on the cusp of high school, but the movie’s excessive use of gross-out humor is a major turn-off for many.
