The 10 Most Tragic Characters From The Hobbit & Lord Of The Rings, Ranked

The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit deal with some heavy themes, producing characters rife with tragedy. Here are some of the saddest of them all.

The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit have some of the most beloved and well-known characters from any fantasy series, and while there are many heroic moments and inspiring things about these characters, there’s also a lot of tragedy. These books and films deal with heavy themes of death, war, and destruction of the natural world, and there are many sad things that happen to the main heroes.

But, some of these characters are more tragic than others. While some get to have relatively happy endings and find peace, others either die or are never able to truly recover from their trauma.

10 Denethor

Denethor is last on this list because his destruction was largely of his own making, but there is still something sad about it. Denethor became mad with the idea of power in a sense, and his use of the Palantir also drove him into a state of doom that he couldn’t recover from.

While his death is one of the most upsetting to watch in the movies, his treatment of his sons makes it hard to feel completely bad for him.

9 Haldir

Haldir is a character who does appear in the books but who is given a more extended role in the films. As an ambassador from Lothlorien and the leader of their army at Helm’s Deep, he’s a powerful and interesting character.

His death might not happen in the books, but it is very emotional how it transpires in the films. But, most likely, the book version sailed to the Grey Havens with the rest of the elves of Lorien.

8 Thranduil and Elrond’s wives

While Thranduil’s wife is never even given a name by Tolkien, Elrond’s wife, Celebrian, does have a known history. She is actually captured and tortured by orcs, and this ordeal scars her so much she leaves to the Undying Lands.

In The Hobbit movies, Thranduil’s wife is said to have suffered a similar fate, and her death haunts her husband and son.

7 Theoden

King Theoden is a rather tragic figure in many ways. First of all, he doubts his own might compared to the mighty Rohan kings of old, and he becomes a victim to Saruman and placed under a curse. While the curse is broken by Gandalf, Theoden continually strives to find the same kind of glory as heroes like Aragorn.

While he does largely redeem himself, he then meets a tragic end at the Battle of Pelennor Fields when he is killed by the Witch-King.

6 Fili and Kili

For fans of The Hobbit book, the deaths of Fili and Kili were two of the most upsetting. Both of these heroic dwarves, who were Thorin’s nephews, died at the Battle of Five Armies.

They died while trying to defend Thorin, but none of them made it out alive. Their deaths were tragic because they were relatively so young and had a lot of potential and promise ahead of them. It’s no wonder some fans were upset when their deaths were changed for the movies so they didn’t even die together.

5 Thorin

Just like the deaths of Fili and Kili, Thorin’s death was one of the most tragic of the story. Thorin was never able to reclaim Erebor exactly as he planned even though Smaug was driven out and killed. He did not re-establish himself as King under the Mountain, and his line was effectively ended when he and his two nephews all died at the battle.

There is something really sad about Thorin spending so much of his life trying to achieve something only to die in its pursuit.

4 Frodo Baggins

Compared to many of the characters on this list, Frodo’s fate might not seem so tragic. After all, he doesn’t die while on his quest to destroy the Ring, despite all odds, and he is granted passage to the Undying Lands which is an honor in a way.

However, the scars from being Ringbearer were innumerable, and they weren’t just because of his physical wounds. He was never really able to fully recover in either sense, and he definitely suffered both during the journey and after. His youth and innocence were really taken from him, and this just shows how the series doesn’t glamorize war and violence and portrays these issues realistically.

3 Arwen

Arwen is another tragic character who doesn’t have an unhappy life all of the time. While she is able to spend happy years with Aragorn and have a family with him, Aragorn’s life is still very short to an elf woman.

She has basically the blink of an eye with him before she is left alone, and since she gives up her immortality for him, she then loses her own life. It’s definitely the most tragic romantic tale in the series.

2 Boromir

While most of the members of the Fellowship are only seen as heroes, Boromir is a bit more complex. He is the character most tempted by the Ring, and this does reflect the weakness of the race of men.

However, he does have the best of intentions and wants to save his people. He is a man of honor, and when he tries to take the Ring from Frodo, it shows the power and destruction of the Ring. His death is also extremely sad because he feels he has failed himself and everyone he swore oaths to.

1 Gollum

While there are many sad things that happen to the heroes of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, the most tragic figure of all is Gollum. While he’s definitely not a hero, there is a lot to pity about him. The movies especially do a good job of making him both pitiable and grotesque.

While he started out as Smeagol, the Ring poisoned and destroyed him over time to turn him into something that wasn’t even human. And, while he would always return to the Ring’s call, there were moments where fans felt sorry for his suffering.
