Buffy the Vampire Slayer started out as a show about a young woman tasked with killing vampires to protect her town. It morphed into a show about the Hellmouth under Sunnydale, with demons on both sides trying to rip it open to reign terror on the Earth. It was up to Buffy to stop the villains that showed up to start this war.
Through seven seasons, Buffy and the Scooby Gang faced a plethora of capable villains, some deadly and dangerous and others very smart and cunning. It was when the brains matched the brawn that Buffy usually found her back against the wall, and some villains proved almost too smart for their own good.
10 The Trio
The Trio were the villains that turned Willow’s world upside down. These were three intelligent young men — Warren, Jonathan, and Andrew — but they did little to show their common sense when they set their sights on the Scooby Gang.
These three mostly spent high school wishing they knew how to talk to girls and then took it out on the women that they believed rejected them by taking over Sunnydale. When Warren killed Tara, he doomed them all and none of their brainpower could save them from Willow’s rage.
9 Spike
Spike is one of the most popular Buffy the Vampire Slayer villains of all time, but he isn’t always the smartest. He rolled into town in Season 2 and immediately made his presence known. Spike had a history with Angel and quickly became a thorn in Buffy’s side, although fans quickly gravitated to his personality and charm.
Spike was extremely intelligent concerning perception and observation and could often read a room better than anyone around him, giving him an advantage in most fights. He also had extensive knowledge of demon species, thanks to how long he had been alive.
8 Mayor Wilkins
Mayor Richard Wilkins has served as the Mayor of Sunnydale since it became a town in 1899. He served as Mayor almost 100 years, showing he had the intelligence to remain on top with no one realizing he had made pacts with demons to keep him there.
He was a powerful sorcerer who used his powers to gain impressive political influence. He even convinced a slayer, Faith, to turn on Buffy, showing his power and influence were immeasurable.
7 Caleb
Caleb showed up in Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 7 and tore Buffy’s world apart. When he arrived, he wore the clothes of a preacher and always talked about the sins of the world. He spoke of “dirty girls” and the danger they possessed. He then jabbed out one of Xander’s eyes.
Caleb then brought the greatest of danger to Buffy and the potentials, as he was a powerful man who believed he could reign terror down upon any woman and never face the consequences. With The First Evil on his side, he was nearly unstoppable.
6 Adam
Adam showed up in Season 4 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer as a villain created by The Initiative to serve as a super-soldier. However, Adam was evil and eventually rose to fight Buffy, Riley, and the remaining members of the Initiative.
The Initiative created Adam from parts of various captured demons, giving him countless powers. He also had superhuman intelligence, allowing him to master both human and demon psychology.
5 Dark Willow
Willow was easily the most powerful magic-user in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, following possibly Giles. She was also extremely intelligent before this, as she had the reputation of being a nerd in high school because of her heightened intelligence. When she began studying magic, she perfected countless spells, becoming extremely powerful.
This led to her turn as a villain when The Trio killed her girlfriend, Tara. Dark Willow almost destroyed the world and almost killed her friends. She came out of this and ended up training more in the discipline of magic, gaining even more power.
4 Angelus
Angel was one of the most popular characters in the Buffyverse, first as the love interest to Buffy Summers on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and later as the star of his own series. However, before Angel was a hero vampire with a soul, he was an immoral and deadly vampire who enjoyed killing.
When he reverted to Angelus in Season 2, he showed his evil ways and proved how smart he was, setting up traps, manipulating everyone around him, and proving to be one of the most dangerous vampires in history.
3 The Master
The Master was Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s first big bad. While seeming to be a typical horrific vampire lord, he was so much more. He was a powerful vampire, the oldest known in existence.
The Master led a vampire cult that worshipped the Old Ones and had a direct lineage to Angel, as it was The Master who sired Darla. He is also highly intelligent, with a mastery of dark arts and prophecies, as well as a knowledge of sorcery and magic.
2 Glory
There is a lot to be said about being a goddess. Glorificus was a goddess also known as That Which Cannot Be Named. She was from a hell dimension, banished to Earth in human form, and ended up as one of Buffy’s deadliest villains. As someone who had lived for a very long time, her knowledge was immeasurable.
She had one power that increased her intelligence as she absorbed the memories of people whose energies she sucked. She also recognizes creatures on sight, has immense mystical powers, and can speak every language in existence, human and demon.
1 The First
There is not a villain in Buffy the Vampire Slayer with more knowledge and intelligence than the First Evil. This was a being predating both humans and demons, personifying evil.
It could assume the form of anyone who died, including vampires. He is the only seemingly omniscient being in the Buffyverse and it can take on all memories of anyone it took the form of. It also had the power to alter reality, create illusions, and possess other beings. There is no beating the First Evil, there is only slowing it down.
