The 10 Worst Episodes Of One Day At A Time According To IMDb
The sitcom One Day At A Time, though highly-rated, is often fairly political, and, as such, has garnered a small amount of criticism recently.

One Day At A Time has emerged as one of the most entertaining sitcoms in recent years. It’s a remake of another 70s sitcom of the same title. While the original series focused on a white American family, the remake focusses on a Hispanic Cuban-American family living in Echo Park, Los Angeles.
The sitcom has been praised for how it boldly tackles societal issues like sexism, mental illness, homophobia, immigration, and racism. One Day At A Time has been met with critical acclaim and has managed to receive three Emmy nominations during it’s run. Given how good the sitcom is, it’s worst episodes aren’t exactly intolerable. But, here they are, according to IMDb.
10 Hold, Please (8.2)
In season one’s seventh episode, Penelope was struggling to navigate through bureaucratic obstacles with Veterans Affairs as she tried to get a medical appointment. It was revealed that her shoulder injury happened a few years back when she was stationed in Kabul, Afghanistan. Apparently, a pallet of surgical gloves accidentally landed on her shoulder.
Elena had a bigger problem, too. While she was on the phone confessing how she wasn’t attracted to boys, Alex happened to be hiding in Lydia’s room. He had sneaked back home to steal some of his mother’s pills but hid when he realized Elena was around. When she found Alex, Elena was forced to beg him not to tell anyone what he heard.
9 No Mass (8.2)
Lydia disappeared after a heated debate with her daughter about God in episode three of the first season. After her departure, everything in the house fell apart, leading to a massive mess that no one could handle.
As Penelope made her speech about inspiration, everyone opened up about what got them going. It was revealed that Lydia was inspired by her faith, Penelope was inspired by Tennis star Serena Williams, Alex was inspired by wrestler and actor John Cena, Elena drew inspiration from Sonia Sotomayor, while Carmen was inspired by life and death.
8 Hurricane Victor (8.2)
Penelope was beginning to have feelings for Ben. The two developed a habit of making out, but then her husband Victor threatened to ruin everything when he made a surprise visit in an effort to rekindle their love.
The episode had a major goof too. When Penelope walked in and found Lydia, Elena, and Alex video-calling Victor, there was a One Day at a Time script visible on the coffee table right to a computer. When the camera angles kept changing, the script kept appearing and reappearing too.
7 A Snowman’s Tale (8.2)
In season one’s fourth episode, Penelope decided to get back in the dating game after Schneider showed her how to use an online dating app to meet new guys. He helped her set up a cool profile and also helped her set up a date with a guy named Adam.
However, after being the first to arrive at the restaurant, Penelope freaked out. She decided to go see chick flick and have ice cream instead. When she went back home, she lied to Elena and Lydia that the date went well. Not one to keep a lie, she was later forced to admit that the date didn’t really happen.
6 Schooled (8.1)
Penelope was finding it hard to juggle family, work, and college. Her grades were low, and her children weren’t giving her an easy time, either. To help her out, Schneider gave her tips to sharpen her memory and get better grades.
When she told Doctor Berkowitz tells about her woes, he told her that such was life and he’d also been exhausted for the last thirty years. He also told her that she was a superwoman who was capable of doing anything if she put her mind to it. To motivate her, he promised her that when she graduated, he’d give her the office next door.
5 The Death of Mrs. Resnick (8.1)
“Mrs. Resnick” was the pet name of Penelope’s beloved car. She named it after one of Victor’s attractive former teachers. It wasn’t always the most reliable of cars, and, while she was on her way to Alex’s basketball, it finally broke down for good.
A heartbroken Penelope was faced with no other option but to trade it for another. She was more upset because it’s the car in which their dad drove them to their first date. After being reluctant to give it away, a saleswoman finally convinced her to do so. She then went home with a brand new car.
4 Work Hard, Play Hard (8.1)
In order to turn Alex into a responsible person and teach him the value of money, Penelope asked Doctor Berkowitz to allow the young man to work at her workplace. However, Alex was proving to be stubborn at work, as he would constantly put on his headphones instead of paying attention.
Elsewhere, Penelope and Elena clashed about traditional and modern jobs. Penelope told her to get a real job because all she did was play video games, but Elena insisted that she already had a job. She had started a Twitch channel where people could watch her play her favorite video games while earning her an income at the same time.
3 Bobos And Mamitas (8.0)
In season one’s second episode, Penelope and Elena lamented that people didn’t take them seriously as women, both at work and at school. Lydia thus decided to offer them some advice from her reservoir of wisdom.
Later on, Penelope rubbished Elena’s advice to take things easy and lashed out at a coworker who she labeled as sexist. She went even further and quit her job. This development threw Dr. Berkowitz in a panic mode as he realized that he couldn’t successfully run the place without the gifted hands and brains of Penelope. He thus offered her a raise to lure her back.
2 The Politics Episode (7.9)
The producers decided to get a little creative and made an animated special for the fourth season’s midseason finale. In it, Penelope’s conservative family, including Estrellita, Tío Juanito, and Tía Mirtha paid her a visit.
She worried that, with the 2020 elections around the corner, they’d just keep on fighting about politics. So, she came up with ways to prevent this. Even though the sitcom frequently mentions the US President Donald Trump as a stylistic choice, his name wasn’t mentioned at all in this episode.

Surprisingly, the pilot episode was actually the lowest-rated episode. Some viewers must have given up after seeing how uninteresting it was, but things would eventually get better as the sitcom progressed.
In the episode, Penelope tried to persuade her daughter Elena to have a traditional Cuban ceremony in order of her roots as she celebrated her 15th birthday. Meanwhile, Alex was looking for ways to make himself more popular at school so he began buying things online. When Penelope allowed him to buy a new pair of shoes, he got greedy and tried to steal from the retailer.
