The 10 Worst SciFi Storylines Of The Decade Ranked

The 2010s were a great time for science fiction. The rise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Game of Thrones enshrined speculative narratives as acceptable to mainstream audiences, paving the way for many new sci-fi shows and movies. HBO and Netflix have released major sci-fi hits such as Westworld and Sense8, while numerous sci-fi films won Academy Awards despite the Academy’s long aversion to genre works.

That said, for all the great science fiction hits out there, the decade has also had its fair share of failures, works whose imagined futures are best left buried in the past. These are the 10 worst sci-fi movies of the 2010s, ranked:

10 Kung Fury (2015)

The 10 Worst SciFi Storylines Of The Decade Ranked

Some movies are so bad, they are actually brilliant. This is the case with Kung Fury, a movie that set out to be intentionally terrible and that succeeded spectacularly as a cinematic love letter to 1980s action films.

The main character, a martial artist cop named Kung Fury, loses his partner in the line of duty. After he is assigned to a new partner, a half-human dinosaur police officer named Triceracop, Kung Fury quits the force and travels back in time to do battle with Adolf Hitler, the Kung Führer. Unlike other films on this list, this was quite enjoyable, but no one would call it “good” in the classical sense.

9 Iron Man 2 (2010)

The 10 Worst SciFi Storylines Of The Decade Ranked

Iron Man 2 is considered one of the worst Marvel films to be made. At the time of its release, the only films in the shared Marvel universe were the original Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, so the classic superhero story formula and expansive worldbuilding of the franchise had not yet been perfected.

This movie struggled to find its voice. At some points, Iron Man was portrayed as an arrogant genius, at others, as a drunken buffoon with poor bladder control. The villains were forgettable, the flag-waving military propaganda was heavy-handed, and even at its best moments, the film was mediocre.

8 Cowboys & Aliens (2011)

The 10 Worst SciFi Storylines Of The Decade Ranked

A movie with a name like Cowboys & Aliens is basically ignoring any hopes of achieving the status of high art. The movie’s basic premise promised a good fun ride about cowboys unloading six shooters and ray guns against a host of alien invaders.

The biggest problem of Cowboys & Aliens was that it actually took itself seriously as a real Western drama. The characters were complex and serious, while the aliens and sci-fi elements were underdeveloped. Though the movie might have struggled to wrangle up an audience, it was definitely one of the more unique Westerns of recent years.

7 Doctor Who: Series 8 (2014)

The 10 Worst SciFi Storylines Of The Decade Ranked

As a TV series that has been around more than fifty years, Doctor Who has been inconsistent in its quality. After an amazing reboot with Christopher Eccleston followed by the first-rate David Tennant run, the show began to lose momentum toward the end of actor Matt Smith’s time as the Doctor.

Eventually, Peter Capaldi took over the lead role in Series 8, much to the disappoint of many fans. While Capaldi himself was fine, the stories became too convoluted and the tone too cartoony – which is saying a lot for a show whose main character travels through time in a blue police box. Later seasons got better, but almost every episode in Series 8 was a disappointment.

6 Iron Sky (2012)

The 10 Worst SciFi Storylines Of The Decade Ranked

Iron Sky is another movie that set out to intentionally be so bad that it was actually great. Unfortunately, it never quite managed to achieve greatness, instead settling for okay. For a story about Nazis on the moon plotting to attack the Earth, it is unfortunately pretty forgettable.

There is a lot that should work in this film. The movie understands its audience and provides all the pulpy dieselpunk aesthetics one could want from an army of Nazi UFOs, while the US President in the film is clearly inspired by Sarah Palin, rooting the movie in some of the more cartoonishly bombastic aspects of real-world politics. Unfortunatly, the satire is neither as smart nor as funny as it tries to be.

5 The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)

The 10 Worst SciFi Storylines Of The Decade Ranked

This film was not as amazing as the title promised. While the first Amazing Spider-Man movie introduced Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker to great acclaim, the sequel drove audiences away with a lackluster plot crammed full of way too many characters.

Worse, the film managed to turn some of the best Spider-Man villains into uninteresting jokes. The Rhino, Electro, and Green Goblin were all reduced to gimmicky clichés that robbed them of any menace. Amazing Spider-Man 2 did include the famous scene of Gwen Stacy’s death, but tragically, it also killed the franchise, retiring Peter Parker until his return in the MCU.

4 Men In Black: International (2019)

The 10 Worst SciFi Storylines Of The Decade Ranked

The original Men In Black that was released in 1997 remains a classic more two decades later. Its two immediate sequels were flops, but they at least seemed to have clear plots. Men In Black: International – an attempt to reboot the franchise with a new creative team – doesn’t even have that to fall back on.

The worldbuilding is flat and the jokes lack humor in this newest MIB installment. While both Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson are great actors, even they are not enough to save this film from being a cosmic failure.

3 John Carter(2012)

The 10 Worst SciFi Storylines Of The Decade Ranked

There was a time in the early 2010s when every studio was looking for the next franchise that would take off. While Disney eventually struck gold with Joss Whedon writing and directing The Avengers, at roughly the same time, John Carter was released in the doomed hope that modern audiences would flock to this classic pulp hero.

Despite being based on great books, the hero was both generic and problematic while the actions sequences of the film felt like they’d been CGI’ed overtop pod races from Star Wars. The story was also too convoluted to follow and too boring for anyone to really care.

2 Fantastic Four (2015)

The 10 Worst SciFi Storylines Of The Decade Ranked

The Fantastic Four are Marvel’s First Family. Unfortunately, Marvel sold the rights to 20th Century Fox, who ruined everything about the series from the characters to the spelling of the title (which was written “Fan4stic” on the movie posters).

This attempt to be a gritty serious film forgot some of the basics of filmmaking, like believable reasons for things happening or remotely interesting characters. It also took arguably the greatest super villain of all time – Doctor Doom – and reduced him to a whiny techie. The film abandons all the fun of the comics but has none of the emotional weight to justify its serious tone.

1 Transformers: The Last Knight (2o17)

Transformers is a series about shapeshifting alien robots who turn into cars. Even with this lackluster premise, the franchise has mainly succeeded in turning bad films into worse sequels. All of these films have been directed by Michael Bay and have excessive product placement, offensive racial stereotypes, unfunny jokes, and objectifying shots of women, but little plot or substance.

The Last Knight went in a new direction, choosing to perpetuate these tired tropes but also deciding that a film about giant alien robots needed King Arthur in it. The only good thing that can be said about this film is that it wasn’t as long as its predecessor.
