BoJack Horseman recently started streaming its sixth and final season in two parts, the second of which streams from 31st January, 2020. The show is known for balancing its quirky, ridiculous sense of humor and deep, profound moments perfectly. BoJack is one of the most real, most complex and most detailed character studies on Netflix…and is a cartoon about a talking horse in his 40s.

There are a ton of fantastic quotes in the brilliant show, so it was hard to narrow down to just a select few. But we tried to focus on some of the most depressing and relatable quotes from various characters on the series. Sometimes you just want to be reminded that someone out there understands how you’re feeling, even if it’s bad.

15 “I Am In Pain, All The Time. My Whole Life. And You Have No Idea.”

This is a quote that BoJack says to Hollyhock and it’s one of many quotes from the show that makes you feel both seen and profoundly sad. If you’ve ever experience clinical depression, then you can likely relate to a lot of moments on the animated series and this one of the most notable ones.

It’s hard to explain to people who aren’t depressed how painful and isolating it can be as a mental illness. It is even harder to explain when you’re very skilled at hiding it, to the point no one has any clue you’re suffering.

14 “I Need To Go Take A Shower So I Can’t Tell If I’m Crying Or Not.”

We have all had moments where we feel like crying, and sometimes it helps to take a hot shower and let it all come out. But it can be even more upsetting when you realize you don’t want to know how upset you are so you take a shower to mask your pain.

This quote that BoJack says in the show is a great indicator of how brutal and hilariously realistic the series can be. It’s not exactly a happy quote, but it might make you smile to realize you’re not alone.

13 “Why did you save me? I don’t want to live.”

This is perhaps the saddest quote in the series, or at least close to it. In a season four episode, BoJack meets an older fly named Ed who refuses to fly. Ed helps BoJack fix his house and eventually, he explains to BoJack what happened when his wife died.

Together they fall into the ocean and Ed starts to drown. BoJack saves him and Ed says the above while breaking down. It’s heartbreaking, especially for anyone who has ever been in a similar position. Ed wanted to die because he feels he has nothing left to live for. It’s definitely a gut punch.

12 “Not Understanding That You’re A Horrible Person Doesn’t Make You Less Of A Horrible Person.”

One thing people don’t always seem to realize is that just because you don’t know you’re a horrible person doesn’t make you any less of a bad person. BoJack has said this quote on the show and said similar things, and he’s had other people say similar things to him throughout the series, as well.

It took him a long time to understand this fact about himself. There are a lot of people out there who might not realize they’re doing bad things or hurting people, but that doesn’t mean they’re not still terrible.

11 “Every Happy Ending Has The Day After The Happy Ending.”

We’ve all grown up hearing stories with end with a happy ending. We look for the happy endings at the end of every piece of media that we consume. From movies to books to television, we want to see characters live happily ever after just like we hope to find happy endings in our day-to-day lives.

But in this quote, Diane points out that you can get a happy ending and then afterward you might learn that not everything is going to remain that way forever. Life has to go on after the “happy ending,” and it may not always remain in that bubble.

10 “When You Look At Someone Through Rose-Colored Glasses, All The Red Flags Just Look Like Flags.”

This was the moment when fans knew BoJack and Wanda were about to break up. Wanda and BoJack were arguing about his habits, and Wanda was angry that she was being treated terribly by BoJack. She didn’t want to be with someone so bitter and negative, and BoJack asked her what she was doing there.

Wanda wistfully asks BoJack what happened to them, to which BoJack replies, “Same thing that always happens. You didn’t know me. Then you fell in love with me. And now you know me.” The scene hits viewers hard as BoJack and Wanda’s relationship comes to an end.

9 “Sometimes I Think I Was Born With A Leak, And Any Goodness I Started With Just Slowly Spilled Out Of Me And Now It’s All Gone. And I’ll Never Get It Back In Me. It’s Too Late. Life Is A Series Of Closing Doors, Isn’t It?”

Another emotional moment of the show comes when BoJack tries to stop Diane’s wedding in the Season 1 episode, “Horse Majeure.” BoJack spends the whole episode trying to sabotage Diane and Mr. Peanutbutter’s wedding because he is in love with Diane. After a series of failed attempts, he is advised by character actress Margo Martindale to confess his feelings to Diane.

Before he can do so, however, he is stopped by an angry Todd, who reminds him he can’t intrude in other people’s lives. BoJack reconciles with Diane, removing all awkwardness between them. The episode ends with BoJack wistfully reflecting on his life and talking with Vincent Adultman.

8 “That Voice, The One That Tells You You’re Worthless And Stupid And Ugly?… It Goes Away, Right?”

Hollyhock and BoJack have a complex relation and an even more complex history. During Season 4, when BoJack thought Hollyhock was his daughter, BoJack was still struggling with alcoholism. In the episode, “Stupid Piece of S**t”, viewers get to see how BoJack thinks and what he sees himself as.

Throughout the episode, BoJack has a voice in his head that tells him he’s worthless, that he’s a stupid piece of s**t. At the end of the episode, when Hollyhock asks the above question, BoJack sadly replies “Yeah.” It’s a pretty powerful moment, as BoJack tries to reassure her while fighting his own demons.

7 “I Want To Feel Good About Myself. The Way You Do. And I Don’t Know How. I Don’t Know If I Can.”

In the Season 2 episode, “Let’s Find Out!”, BoJack is a celebrity guest on Mr. Peanutbutter’s game show, Hollywood Stars and Celebrities: What Do They Know? Do They Know Things?? Let’s Find Out!. Mr. Peanutbutter confronts BoJack about him kissing Diane, and he asks BoJack what more could the universe possibly owe BoJack, who is a huge movie star, has a girlfriend and a TV show.

BoJack then says the above lines, and it’s heartbreaking, as BoJack finally admits he’s jealous of Mr. Peanutbutter and that he doesn’t love himself. He doesn’t know if he even can.

6 “You Can’t Keep Doing S**tty Things, And Then Feel Bad About Yourself Like That Makes It Okay! YOU NEED TO BE BETTER!”

This was one of the most powerful moments of the entire show. In the Season 3 episode, “It’s You,” Todd finally snaps when he learns that BoJack had sex with Emily, and calls out BoJack on all the other things he’s done. BoJack tries to defend himself and says he was drunk and under enormous pressure from the Oscar campaign.

BoJack tells Todd that it’s all over now, but Todd cuts him off and tells him that he’s the problem, not alcohol, or drugs, or any of the terrible things he’s faced. He tells BoJack, “It’s you, okay? It’s you.” It marks the end of their friendship, as Todd asks him what else there is to say.

5 “You’re BoJack Horseman. There’s No Cure For That.”

These chilling words were spoken by BoJack’s mom, Beatrice Horseman, in the Season 2 episode, “Brand New Couch.” Throughout the episode, BoJack keeps screening calls from his mother, but at the end of the episode, while listening to a motivational audiobook, he picks up the phone.

His mother tells him that she read his book, and all the things he said about her. She says BoJack will never be happy. She says. “You were born broken. That’s your birthright.”. It’s a very deep moment, as we get a glimpse of how BoJack was treated as a child and is still treated.

4 “Why Can’t I Be Happy? Am I Busted? I Am. I’m A Pit! I’m A Pit That Good Things Fall Into!”

When Mr. Peanutbutter’s house falls underground due to his support for fracking, the guests at his fundraisers get trapped in his house for 10 days. On the fourth day, Diane and BoJack get drunk and Diane complains how she’s going to die trapped underground surrounded by her husband’s ex-wives.

She realizes she wasn’t happy above ground either and breaks down. It’s a very emotional and sad moment as viewers realize just how terrible Diane feels on the inside, and how she blames herself for her problems.

3 “One Day You’re Gonna Look Around And You’re Going To Realise That Everybody Loves You…But Nobody Likes You. And That’s The Loneliest Feeling In The World.”

In the Season 3 episode, “Love And/Or Marriage,” BoJack is trying to tell Taneisha to hold onto her fiance and never let go. He says that she’s just going to get older and lonelier, and she’s going to try to fill that void with friends, a career, or meaningless hookups.

This was one of those deep moments when BoJack lets other people know his inner feelings. Being a famous actor and a massive TV and movie star, BoJack is quite popular and well-known, but there aren’t many people he can call friends or loved ones. He feels hollow and lonely on the inside.

2 “Sarah Lynn? Sarah Lynn?”

Perhaps the most real moment on the show, this scene hit everybody hard. The moment when BoJack finally faced a consequence for his drinking and drugs, that hadn’t really been there before. The month-long bender he and Sarah Lynn were on ended with them going to the planetarium.

The moment when BoJack asks “Sarah Lynn? Sarah Lynn?” and the credits cut to black in the season 3 penultimate episode, “That’s Too Much, Man!” was when viewers felt the gut-punching realization that Sarah Lynn was dead. Her death haunts BoJack for years and he believes he is truly poisonous. In Season 6, every time BoJack looks at alcohol, he sees the planetarium background lights, reminding himself of his friend’s death.

This quote is spoken by BoJack during the trailer for the show’s sixth season. This statement holds especially true for BoJack, whose life has been anything but easy.
