The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Amateur TV Detectives

No formal police training can spell either success or disaster for fictional characters who take it upon themselves to solve crimes, uncover conspiracies, and bring culprits to justice. Whatever the outcomes may be, amateur sleuths definitely make for entertaining television viewing.

The best and worst untrained detectives on the small screen generate laughs, scares, guffaws, and headshakes alike in their individual quests for the truth. In some cases, they veer much further from the truth than audiences ever expected. In others, these gumshoes prove their institutions are actually very, very good — and they only get better with each new season.

10 Best: Veronica Mars

The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Amateur TV Detectives

Neptune, California is lucky to have burgeoning private detective Veronica Mars among its ranks. In the popular CW series named after its title character, Veronica divides her time between attending high school and solving crimes.

Kristen Bell imbues Veronica with the perfect amount of spunk, emphasizing her character’s sharp-witted nature and impeccable instincts. Sleuthing is clearly in Veronica’s blood, proven by the fact she’s under the supervision of her father, professional PI Keith Mars.

9 Worst: Dory Sief

The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Amateur TV Detectives

Alia Shawkat plays Dory Sief in Search Party, a hipster-heavy noir about bored Brooklynites who cause a ruckus after they try to track down an old friend who has gone missing. Dory thinks she’s uncovering the truth about the whereabouts of Chantal Witherbottom, but she couldn’t more off base.

Dory’s meddling results in not just one, but two, murders. As she digs herself deeper into the proverbial hole, Dory relies on her privilege to get herself out of trouble and the results are shocking.

8 Best: The Winchester Brothers

The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Amateur TV Detectives

For 15 gloriously spooky seasons, Dean and Sam Winchester traverse America in search of supernatural entities and creatures they hope to defeat in Supernatural. There’s no doubt the Winchester brothers acquire some serious detecting skills with each subsequent journey.

Even though they deal in the occult and unexplained phenomena, the Winchesters have to possess investigation skills needed by any good sleuth in order to keep evil forces at bay. Fortunately, they develop quite a few allies along the way who help them pinpoint their targets.

7 Worst: Scooby-Doo And Shaggy

The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Amateur TV Detectives

Left to their own devices, the Great Dane Scooby-Doo and his best human friend Shaggy would spend their days gorging on cheeseburgers instead of investigating strange occurrences as part of Mystery, Inc. Their pals Fred, Daphne, and Velma always bring them into the middle of the chaos, where Shaggy and Scooby are guaranteed to make things worse.

Scooby and Shaggy are petrified by almost anything, and it’s easy to bribe or distract them with snacks. When they do solve mysteries and apprehend villains, it’s usually by accident or happenstance.

6 Best: Precious Ramotswe

The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Amateur TV Detectives

BBC and HBO joined forces to adapt Alexander McCall Smith’s The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency novels into a miniseries. Set in Botswana, the series stars Jill Scott as Mama Precious Ramotswe, who opens up her own detective agency — becoming the country’s first female private investigator.

Initially, Precious is desperate for clients, but she slowly starts to gain traction in her community. She works on cases as diverse as finding missing dogs, hunting ivory smugglers, and finding the culprits responsible for a string of break-ins.

5 Worst: Jonathan Ames

The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Amateur TV Detectives

Jason Schwartzman’s character Jonathan Ames in Bored to Death becomes a private detective for the worst reason imaginable: his girlfriend dumps him. The heartbroken novelist decides to post an ad on Craigslist offering up his sleuthing services after drinking white wine and reading Raymond Chandler.

Needless to say, Jonathan usually does more harm than good when he takes on new clients. To make matters worse, his fumbling boss George (Ted Danson) and insecure best friend Ray (Zach Galifinakis) insist upon tagging along for many of Jonathan’s expeditions.

4 Best: Jessica Fletcher

The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Amateur TV Detectives

In Murder, She Wrote, Angela Lansberry’s character Jessica Fletcher is the consummate amateur TV detective. When she isn’t writing mystery novels after retiring from teaching English in Cabot Cove, Maine, Jessica spends her time one-upping professional detectives with her crime-solving skills.

For such a small town, Cabot Cove has a real murder problem. Good thing Jessica is around to meddle in all the cases that pop up over the show’s 12 season run.

3 Worst: Dexter Morgan

The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Amateur TV Detectives

Dexter Morgan is many things: a serial killer, a father, a blood splatter analyst. Dexter is technically an amateur detective as well, as he doesn’t possess the formal training his colleagues do in the Miami Metro Police Department; he’s a forensic science guy after all.

In order to satisfy his urge to kill, though, Dexter tampers and sleuths in search of new criminals to murder. By the series finale of Dexter, its title character has gotten himself into so much trouble he must fake his own death and assume a new identity.

2 Best: Richard Castle

The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Amateur TV Detectives

Mystery novelist Richard Castle, played by Nathan Fillon, starts off as a pompous know-it-all in ABC’s Castle, but he begins to shape up as the series progresses. After the NYPD asks Castle to assist with a copycat murder based on one of his books, he begins shadowing a female detective named Katherine Beckett (Stana Katic) in hopes of developing a new series inspired by her.

Castle proves to be a pretty good investigator as he joins Beckett, who isn’t thrilled by his presence, on her various cases. It doesn’t take long for them to develop a camaraderie, which blossoms into love.

1 Worst: Audrey Horne

In order to impress her crush Special Agent Dale Cooper in Twin Peaks, Audrey Horne (Sherilyn Fenn) decides to do some of her own detective work in hopes of catching Laura Palmer’s killer. Audrey goes across the Canadian border to One Eyed Jack’s, where she poses as an aspiring sex worker for many episodes.

Audrey puts her life in serious danger, and she eventually realizes she’s in over her head. Fortunately, she’s able to get word to Coop she’s being drugged and forced to remain against her will, and he conducts a raid on the brothel.
