The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Disney Channel Original Movies

The Disney Channel has made over 20 years worth of Disney Channel original movies, which are usually filled with song, dance and angsty teenager plotlines that we all know and love, but what are the best and the worst?

Most Disney Channel original movies have a certain degree of cringe or awkwardness, and some definitely more than others. However, despite that, Disney Channel Original movies have a special place in a lot of people’s hearts, no matter how bad they are. Here are the five best and five worst of the bunch!

10 Best: High School Musical

The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Disney Channel Original Movies

High School Musical is an absolute classic and is a huge part of a lot of people’s childhoods. Because of that, it’s also one of the best. With iconic musical numbers like “Get Your Head In The Game” and “Breaking Free”, it’s bound to be one of the most memorable Disney Channel originals to date, and one of the most rewatched, that’s for sure. It created a generation of fans, which must mean it did something right.

9 Worst: Radio Rebel

The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Disney Channel Original Movies

The Disney Channel is known for putting their TV stars into their movies, and one of these Disney Channel stars is Debbie Ryan, who, after being in Jessie, starred in both Sixteen Wishes and Radio Rebel. Radio Rebel is a strange one.

It’s about a girl called Tara, who is an introvert but is also the confident host of a radio show that she hosts from her bedroom. It’s filled with all the typical high school tropes, and it’s such a weird movie.

8 Best: High School Musical 2

The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Disney Channel Original Movies

Following on from the massive success of High School Musical, the sequel takes the gang to a vacation resort, of which Sharpay is a member of, and they all start fighting over who gets to compete in the annual resort talent contest for the Star Dazzle Award.

The plot is almost identical to the first High School Musical, except in a different location, but the songs are progressively better, including absolute hits like “Bet On It” and “Gotta Go My Own Way”.

7 Worst: Jump In

The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Disney Channel Original Movies

Jump In is one of those Disney Channel movies that just seemed to be popping up every couple of months. The film is about a young boxer, played by High School Musical’s Corbin Bleu, who joins a double dutch skipping team, and finds out that he loves it.

There’s not much else to it besides some drama and a lot of skipping. Although those skipping competitions are seriously cool, and anyone would wonder why competitive double dutch isn’t a huge thing these days.

6 Best: Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie

The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Disney Channel Original Movies

Wizards Of Waverly Place was one of the most popular Disney Channel shows of the 2000/2010’s, so it makes sense that the movie released in direct connection to it was just as popular as the show.

The movie takes the Russo family outside of New York and on vacation, where naturally, they misuse their magic and things go horribly wrong. It’s a great and probably under-appreciated movie that more people should watch.

5 Worst: Lemonade Mouth

The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Disney Channel Original Movies

Lemonade Mouth is one of the worst Disney Channel movies because it just doesn’t make a lot of sense. The film is about a group of troubled kids who start a band in honor of a lemonade vending machine.

Sure, there are some great songs in the film, and it’s definitely one of the Disney Channels classic movies, but it’s definitely not one of the strongest.

4 Best: Camp Rock

The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Disney Channel Original Movies

Camp Rock, despite all its flaws (and there are many), is a really fun film. It’s a Disney Channel classic, and for those who aren’t familiar with the plot, Camp Rock is about a girl called Mitchie who goes to a musical summer camp.

If you grew up with this film then there’s a chance that you also dreamed about actually going to Camp Rock. The music is great, and how could anyone not love the Jonas Brothers?

3 Worst: Teen Beach Movie

The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Disney Channel Original Movies

Teen Beach Movie might be The Disney Channels’ most confusing original film/musical to date. The only thing that saves this movie is the fun musical numbers and the fact that Ross Lynch was in it.

It tells the story of a girl and her best friend who gets transported into their favorite movie. Everything about Teen Beach Movie is so bizarre, it just doesn’t make any sense at all. The movie starts as a cross over between West Side Story and Grease and turns into what feels like a sci-fi film.

2 Best: Starstruck

The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) Disney Channel Original Movies

While Starstruck is incredibly cheesy, it also happens to be one of the Disney Channel’s best original movies. It stars Sterling Knight, who was already well known for being in Sonny With A Chance and is basically full of cheesy romantic moments and the troubles of having a crush on a famous singer.

Once again it’s high-level Disney cringe, but it’s absolutely worth it. Additionally, the title song is an instant classic, and so are the other songs in the movie.

1 Worst: Kim Possible (Live Action)

In 2019 the Disney Channel released a live-action film based on the Kim Possible series which was extremely popular around the same time frame as Hannah Montana and Wizards of Waverly Place.

Considering Disney’s history with live-action remakes, it’s not surprising that they would remake one of their most popular tv series into a film, but it doesn’t do the series a lot of justice, and it’s probably best if Kim Possible was just left alone for the time being.
