The 9 Most WellKnown Actors Who Have Made The Least Amount Of Movies

It’s easy to assume that the most famous actors are those that appear in the most movies— and while that is often the case, that is not always the case. As the saying goes, quality over quantity. While it’s great for an actor to have a lot of movies under their belt, it’s all about the performances, no matter how often or frequently they’re seen.

Some actors make a name for themselves despite only having a small few movies in their filmography. Granted, in some cases, it’s because their career was cut short by tragedy. But other times, some actors are just comfortable selecting only a small number projects every so often.

10 John Cazale: All Of His Movies Were Best Picture Nominees

The 9 Most WellKnown Actors Who Have Made The Least Amount Of Movies

John Cazale is partially famous for having a short filmography, as well as giving consistently excellent performances in excellent movies for the short time he spent in Hollywood. He only appeared in five movies, but each of those movies— The Godfather I and II, The Conversation, Dog Day Afternoon, and The Deer Hunter— were nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, and a few won the award.

It’s as if Cazale was a good luck charm to every movie he dedicated his time to. It’s just a shame that his career was cut short by lung cancer.

9 Chris Farley: SNL’s Breakout Star Was Destined For Hollywood

The 9 Most WellKnown Actors Who Have Made The Least Amount Of Movies

After spending the first half of the ’90s as a staple of Saturday Night Live, Chris Farley was expected to spend the second half of the decade as the show’s next breakout Hollywood star. He was certainly on the right track, starring in comedies like Tommy Boy, Black Sheep, Beverly Hills Ninja, Almost Heroes, and Dirty Work (not to mention the minor cameos he had between 1992 and 1995 for comedies like Wayne’s World).

After just 10 movies under his belt, Farley’s life was tragically cut short. He was molding himself into a major player in Tinseltown and he left this world with many projects in development— including the title role of Shrek which he was actually in the process of recording his lines for, but couldn’t finish before his death— that surely would’ve made him a true superstar.

8 James Dean: Only Starred In Three Classics

James Dean started his career in small, often uncredited roles in television, but 1955 was set to be his breakout year in the moving pictures (as movies were often called back in the day). First with East of Eden, co-starring alongside Julie Harris and Raymond Massey. Then, his most iconic performance arrived later that year as he starred in Rebel Without a Cause.

Unfortunately, that one was released one month after his tragic car accident. With only one more movie— Giant— released posthumously the following year, Dean’s career ended just as it was taking off.

7 Marilyn Monroe: Didn’t Need Many Movies Become An Icon

One would assume that someone who has achieved as much of an iconic legacy as Marilyn Monroe has would have had more acting credits under her belt. Surprisingly, she only appeared in 29 completed movies (which is a relatively small number for those days and a star of her magnitude in Hollywood’s studio system). But perhaps a star of her level didn’t need to be in a lot of movies to begin with.

After all, she first became a star following brief appearances in classics like All About Eve, indicating that all it took was a few minutes onscreen for her to light up the room. Her charisma was unmatched and for that reason, her superstardom, however short it was, could never be denied.

6 Chadwick Boseman Was Only Just Getting Started

Before he tragically and unexpectedly died at the age of 43, Chadwick Boseman had only 15 feature-length movies to his name. He had been working extremely hard on his craft since 2003, and finally caught a breakout 10 years later when he played Jackie Robinson for 42.

A year later, he was James Brown. Two years after that, he was Black Panther in the first MCU film to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. And four years later, he garnered his first and only individual Oscar nomination for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Sadly, he never lived long enough to see himself announced as a nominee.

5 Tupac Shakur Was Quickly Becoming A Respected Actor

There’s a rare handful of musicians who prove themselves as exceptionally great actors, and an even rarer case for rappers who prove themselves as decent actors (let alone great). Tupac Shakur was a rare commodity and in many respects, before he was murdered, he set a standard for rappers who break into movies.

Early on, he was typecast in roles that fit his gangster image like Above the Rim and Juice, but it was his surprising performances that cast him against types like Poetic Justice, Gridlock’d, and his final movie Gang Related that earned him praise from critics.

4 Mara Wilson Knew When It Was Time To Quit

The public has witnessed how the pressures of being famous have gotten to the most celebrated child stars over the years. The deeper that those pressures hurdle, the more damning those feelings can weigh on a developing child’s mindset. Mara Wilson felt those pressures around the time Matilda was released.

“I was very depressed, I was very anxious,” she candidly told NPR. “It was really hard for me. So I think that I definitely became kind of disenchanted with acting.” Following her appearance in Thomas and the Magic Railroad, Wilson stopped acting to pursue a new life as a writer, returning to acting recently in small spades and appearing on podcasts

3 Peter Ostrum Got Bored Of Chocolate

For any other child actor, the lead role of Charlie in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory would have been a breakout role destined to lead them to bigger and better things. For Peter Ostrum, it was his only acting role because he just wasn’t interested in pursuing other opportunities.

“Acting was fine, but I wanted something more steady,” he told The Daily Mirror. “The key is to find something you love doing, and that’s what I got.” So he quickly started investing in a passion that he truly loved: Taking care of animals. To this day, he’s lived a normal, mild-mannered life as a veterinarian.

2 Heath Ledger’s Career Ended Abruptly

The 9 Most WellKnown Actors Who Have Made The Least Amount Of Movies

Similar to other actors on this list whose lives suddenly ended abruptly, Heath Ledger’s career ended just as it was truly starting to skyrocket. His career began in 1992, but he didn’t start gaining worldwide recognition until 1999 with his lead movie role in 10 Things About You. He gradually had notable roles throughout the 2000s, leading into 2005, where he had a bevy of big roles released that year. Particularly, his Oscar-nominated performance in Brokeback Mountain.

He followed that up with playing The Joker in The Dark Knight but never lived to see his performance on the big screen which actually earned him an Oscar. Ultimately, his career ended with only 19 film credits.

1 Daniel Day-Lewis Took His Time With Method Acting

Daniel Day-Lewis was always careful and particular about which roles he sought after and how often he did so. More often than not, he’d take multiple years off in between projects, at one point semi-retiring between 1997 to become a shoe-maker (woodworking is his biggest passion) before finally retiring for good in 2017.

It explains why he only has 21 movie credits to his name despite a nearly 40-year career. Insistent on his privacy, Day-Lewis has never fully explained the method of his madness, but one has to wonder if he has so few projects because he dedicated the art of method acting to all of his performances. It’s a grueling process that, assumingly, an actor can only stand to do so many times.
