Before Patrick Wilson was cast in Insidious’ lead role of Josh Lambert, another actor was offered the gig, but didn’t end up playing the part. Starring in Insidious, and later The Conjuring franchise, would succeed in making Wilson a bit of a horror mainstay, and also lead to a close working relationship with director James Wan, which eventually saw Wilson become King Orm in Aquaman. In that respect, it was quite fortuitous for Wilson that he ended up cast in Insidious.
However, as is often the case in Hollywood, Wilson wasn’t the first choice for the role of Josh Lambert. Considering how great a fit he ended up being for the part, and the fact that he reprized it for Insidious: Chapter 2, it’s a bit hard to imagine anyone else venturing into The Further to look for Josh’s son Dalton, or later trying to reclaim Josh’s body from Parker Crane, aka the Bride in Black. Yet, somewhere there exists an alternate timeline where that exact thing occurred.
Wilson proved so suited for the role of Josh Lambert that today, many fans hope the Lambert family will return for the upcoming Insidious 5, even though their story was basically already told. One wonders if Wan’s original pick would’ve become as popular, but he’s certainly no slouch in the acting department.
The Actor Who Almost Played Insidious’ Josh Lambert
Before James Wan cast Patrick Wilson as Josh Lambert in Insidious, it turns out the role was offered to none other than Ethan Hawke, who was a much more well-known name than Wilson at that point. Wilson had played Nite Owl in Zack Snyder’s Watchmen, but that was his only big mainstream studio release. However, Hawke turned down the role, for reasons not publicly known. He’s pretty much always working, so it’s possible his schedule couldn’t accommodate it, or perhaps he just wasn’t interested in Insidious’ story. Hawke had just done the vampire movie Daybreakers, so it’s doubtful he had an aversion to working in horror.
What’s funny about Hawke passing on Insidious is that not too long after, he would accept the lead role of true crime writer Ellison Oswalt in director Scott Derrickson’s 2012 horror flick Sinister. Not only are both movies from Blumhouse Productions, but the Oswalt and Lambert roles themselves are fairly similar, both being the head of a family that moves into a new house and begins being haunted by strange supernatural events. The actual causes of these events are quite different, but there’s still an odd parallel. One wonders if Hawke regretted passing on Insidious after it became a hit, so he agreed to the next pitch he got for a Blumhouse movie.
