The Addams Family 5 Reasons The Sequel Is As Good As The Original (& 5 Why It Isnt)

The Addams family are the macabre family of television and film. While the 1964 television show was the earliest adaptation of the family members, the 1991 film is what had fans falling in love. The Addams Family brought back to life the television version in a way that many felt was a perfect representation of the characters.

No one could surpass Morticia (Anjelica Huston) and Gomez’s (Raul Julia) strange yet romantic love for each other. Much less the iconic Wednesday Addams. The film was all about the family and their macabre life as their long lost Uncle Fester (Christopher Lloyd) returns. The film was so popular there was a sequel. Addams Family Values brought in a new member and a new villain. Many raved that the sequel did its predecessor justice but still had its certain flaws.

10 Isn’t: Multiple Subplots

The sequels inclusion of multiple subplots was a hit or miss with some audiences’. Many praised the multiple subplots because it furthered developed the characters on their own. They got to see Pugsley and Wednesday tackle “normal” people at summer camp. Wednesday even got a love interest.

While all this occurred there was also another story happening. It revolved around Debbie becoming the family’s new nanny. In reality, she was a killer with her eyes set on Fester and his money. While watching the film, some would get a bit lost in the order of how things are occurring.

9 Is: The Complex Story & Comedy

The film’s story elements are where people have a yay or nay reaction. The film included many subplots that some felt was too much while others felt it added a needed level of complexity. It all starts with the birth of Pubert, the new baby. The new addition created jealousy and rivalry with Pugsley and Wednesday.

This in return leads to Gomez and Morticia having to hire a nanny. The nanny is actually a Black Widow who traps rich bachelors and then kills them. In between, there is also the storyline of the kid’s having to survive summer camp amongst the ordinary people. Above all the film stayed true to its witty and macabre themed comedy that made the first film popular.

8 Isn’t: Not So Family Friendly

Many viewers felt that the new sequel film deviated from the family-friendly nature of the first film. The sequel was darker and brooding and centered towards the macabre that wasn’t seen in the first. Critics actually gave reviews that the film wouldn’t be suitable for families and their children.

There are multiple reasons why a critic would think this way that will be discussed in detail. A lot of it revolved around the inclusion of more adult themes as well as the acts of certain characters. One of them is how the film created a more gruesome reality about Thanksgiving.

7 Is: The Thanksgiving Play

For audience members who are of older age or who are now coming to watch the sequel film, they might take some joy in the Thanksgiving scene. At the summer camp where Pugsley and Wednesday are forced to go to, they put on a Thanksgiving play. Wednesday is tasked with the role of Pocahantas.

Wednesday decides to enact some revenge against the owners and the ordinaries. She sabotages and takes over the play to give a brutal truth to what Thanksgiving really was about. She and her companions then take over the camp and burn it to the ground and even tie up the lead actresses and spit roasts the counselors over a fire.

6 Isn’t: It’s More Mean In A Bizzare Way

One of the things that stick out from the previous film is how some of the characters act and their overall purpose. This taking from the chipper Gary (Peter MacNicol) and Becky Granger (Christine Baranski). While on the outside they appear to be super happy, they have some evil tendencies.

They make fun of the central characters by calling him “four eyes.” They also inherently disklike any child who isn’t preppy and pristine. They even call out kids who don’t fit into their mold of perfection. They and the other campers try to make life difficult for the Addams just for being different.

5 Is: Many Scenes Of Acting Gold & No One Changed

What made the sequel film so great in comparison to the original was the fact that no one changed. Characters remained the same and so did the actors. Expect for Grandmama who was played by actress Carol Kane. Overall the film made no extreme changes to how the characters looked or acted.

Many felt that the sequel had even better acting moments than the first. Take for example, when the Addams goes to the summer camp and show their dislike for the ordinary people and Gomez’s grimace of disgust. One of the best moments is Debbie’s monologue after her failed attempts at killing Fester. She is off the rails when Fester won’t die even after electrocution and a bomb. She ties up the Addams’ with intent to kill them and gives a monologue about how she came to be. Her monologue was moving in a creepy way and resonated with the Addams’.

4 Isn’t: Willing To Kill The Baby

The Addams Family 5 Reasons The Sequel Is As Good As The Original (& 5 Why It Isnt)

Many fans of the family know that they have their killer tendencies, even the Addams siblings. Hence why Wednesday has no issue electrocuting Pugsley or Morticia giving her a bigger knife for Pugsley. There’s even Pugsley getting rid of the “Stop” sign to create a car pile up.

Things went a bit far when the kids get jealous of their new sibling. They saw off the banisters of the stairs for the chance of him slipping through. There’s even when they planned to use a guillotine. Things got even more twisted when they purposely throw the baby off the roof and then off the stairs. Some wouldn’t have thought the kids to be willing to kill their sibling even if they say they’re just playing with him.

3 Is: A More Devious Villain

The Addams Family 5 Reasons The Sequel Is As Good As The Original (& 5 Why It Isnt)

The first film revolved around a loan shark using her son, that looks like Fester, to swindle the Addams’ out of their fortune. It’s later revealed that the son really was Fester but with amnesia. The film had a notable villain but the sequel took the cake.

Debbie is a sweet face but with ill intentions. She pretends to be a nanny from the agency to be hired to take care of the kids. In reality, she is known as the Black Widow who seduces bachelors and kills them on their wedding night in order to become rich. Debbie proved to be sinister and evil and more out of sorts than the Addams. She was willing to kill the entire family.

2 Isn’t: The Awkard Sex Talk

Audiences’ felt the use of a sex theme was a bit hard to stomach in the sequel and inherently made the film more adult-themed. In the first film, viewers’ are introduced to mild forms of sex talk or innuendos with Morticia and Gomez. But the sequel made it blatantly clearer.

While waiting for the baby to arrive, Wednesday and Pugsley are listening to a girl’s made-up story of how babies are born. Wednesday cuts short and simply said her parents had sex. Later, during Fester and Debbie’s honeymoon he explains having many times listened to Mortician and Gomez have sexual relations. It’s followed by Fester’s first sexual experience.

1 Is: Gomez And Morticia’s Love Reigns On

What makes the sequela just as good as the first film is the dynamic and romantic relationship between Gomez and Morticia. This is a married couple that is undeniably in love. The sequel continues it and more so when Gomez thinks more about his wife’s happiness.

They take a stroll through the graveyard and he pushes her to pursue time on her own. He wants her to revive what she had interests in. Audiences also can’t forget the iconic dance number at the restaurant.
