The Arrowverse Finally Has A Replacement For Arrows Oliver Queen

The Arrowverse finally has a replacement for Arrow’s Oliver Queen. Black Lightning now has a similar equivalent with Khalil “Painkiller” Payne. Oliver came from an incredibly wealthy family and grew up with a lot of privileges not afforded to others. Oliver was a billionaire for most of the show’s run, owning an entire corporation and using his money to also fund his work as Star City’s Green Arrow — this included having a secret bunker with high-tech gadgets, computer systems, and weaponry. Khalil didn’t grow up rich, but he’s using his money for bigger things.

During Black Lightning season 4’s episode seven, which served as a backdoor pilot for a potential Painkiller spinoff show, it is confirmed Khalil is now a millionaire. The character, who left Freeland at the end of Black Lightning season 3, managed to escape the ASA’s control. In the year since, he made a new home for himself in a new city and discovered the millions of dollars the agency — which is responsible for brainwashing him — was keeping under wraps. Khalil acquired the money and used it to buy a building that housed a lab and secret bunker for research, vigilante-like activities, and advanced technology.

This update to his financial situation puts him on par with Oliver Queen, who was previously the richest man in the Arrowverse. Khalil’s wealth might also rival Batman’s, though the Arrowverse version of the superhero has been absent for years now and his whereabouts remain unknown. That said, Khalil is in a more unique situation than Oliver or Bruce Wayne in that he is now living in Akashic Valley, renowned for its advancement in technology (including self-driving cars) and general wealth. It’s no Star City or Gotham, that’s for sure. Akashic Valley changes up the game for the Arrowverse, which typically sees rich heroes like Kate Kane’s Batwoman, Batman, and Green Arrow living in cities with a lot of corruption and economic inequality. However, Akashic Valley seems more futuristic and well-balanced, which makes Khalil’s newfound wealth stand out less than Oliver’s once did.

The biggest difference between Painkiller’s newfound wealth and Oliver’s is the latter inherited his money from his family, who often benefitted from the misfortune of others and executing shady deals (especially in the early seasons of Arrow). Still, Oliver ultimately used his money in an attempt to make Star City a better place than his parents did. Conversely, Khalil discovered the millions the ASA used to fund their diabolical experimentation on metahumans, taking it for himself to start a new life. Interestingly enough, Khalil is still a teenager and the fact he’s already using his money for good speaks volumes to the kind of person he wants to be. It’s likely Khalil took the money as a way to make amends for what the ASA had done to him.

To be sure, Batwoman’s Mary Hamilton might rival Khalil financially considering she owns shares of her mother’s company and Kate Kane’s bar. However, she primarily uses that money to fund her underground clinic rather than invest in Batwoman’s vigilante activities, which have already been set up by Batman. If the Painkiller spinoff officially moves forward at The CW, Khalil would effectively replace the Arrowverse’s Oliver Queen in the wealth department. With expensive gadgets, his own team and hideout, Black Lightning’s Khalil is far more in control over his future as a reluctant vigilante than ever before.
