The Avengers Most Hated Leader Is Back More Powerful Than Ever

With a huge roster and a history stretching back to 1963, the Avengers have had some pretty unpopular members, but now their most hated hero is returning as part of Avengers Forever, joining a team of alternate-reality Avengers to combat the multiversal Masters of Evil.

Coming this December, Avengers Forever will star a team of Avengers from alternate realities, from What If…? star Captain Carter to Erik Killraven, a resistance leader from a future where Martians conquer the Earth. Led by Tony Stark, the Invincible Ant-Man, this team of powerhouses have been assembled to fight against a threat no single reality can handle alone. From a silver-skinned Thing to a feral Beast, there are plenty of surprises in the roster fans have seen so far, but one easily missed hero may actually be from Marvel’s mainstream reality, and if so he’s the least likely inclusion, given his reputation among his former team.

The hero in question is Doctor Druid, aka Doctor Droom, aka Anthony Ludgate. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1961’s Amazing Adventures, Doctor Druid is a powerful magic user who studied under the Ancient One prior to Doctor Strange. A surprisingly early Marvel hero, Druid languished in obscurity after his first appearance, returning to the comics in fits and starts ever since. Never quite gelling with Marvel’s other heroes, Druid is arrogant and ambitious, most famous for falling under the influence of Ravonna and scheming to become the single worst leader the Avengers ever had. Humiliated in his grab for power, Doctor Druid was cut loose from the team and later burned to death in a garbage can by the Son of Satan. Now, it seems some version of him will return in Avengers Forever, as he appears slightly above Ant-Man’s head in the recently released cover from Aaron Kuder, shared by Newsarama.

Doctor Druid isn’t an evil character, but he’s not a traditional hero either. After being killed by the Son of Satan, Doctor Druid was briefly resurrected in the Chaos War, and later went on to manifest in the mystical Weirdworld, where he quickly went about using his hypnotic abilities to gain power. Druid has become something of a running joke as the Avenger that other heroes hate. In Chaos War: Dead Avengers #1 (from Fred Van Lente and Tom Grummett) even Rita DeMara – a former villain who took up the Yellowjacket mantle after Hank Pym – has heard of him, saying, “I remember you now. You’re a $%&#. You were always a $%&#. And now that you’re dead, against all odds, you’re an even bigger $%&#.” Despite their shared tutelage, Doctor Strange likewise distrusted Doctor Druid when the two worked together in Doctor Strange: Surgeon Supreme.

Like the other Avengers on the cover, it’s possible this is simply another version of Doctor Druid – perhaps even one who deserves to be part of the most powerful iteration of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes ever assembled. But with no visible differences to his usual design, plenty of experience traveling to other realities, and very few appearances in modern comics for a new version to twist or subvert, it’s also possible that the always-ambitious Doctor Druid has failed upwards into this ultimate version of the Avengers.

Gathered from countless realities, the team starring in Jason Aaron and Aaron Kuder’s Avengers Forever are the heavy hitters of the multiverse, and Doctor Druid has never been a slouch in the power department, but what he offers in magical ability, he lacks in interpersonal skills and heroic outlook. For comic fans, Avengers Forever offers a fascinating opportunity to see new versions of even obscure heroes, but it will be the cherry on the cake if it turns out the much-derided Doctor Druid of Earth-616 has managed to secure a spot on the ultimate Avengers roster after his disastrous time on the original team.
