WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Bad Batch Season 1, Episode 14, “War-Mantle,” streaming now on Disney+.

Now that Cid is back in control of her parlor, the Bad Batch is back to running missions for their Trandoshan employer. However, before the team can get back in the groove, they’re interrupted when Captain Rex contacts them with an urgent request. He needs them to go and extract an old friend the planet Duro, and while Clone Force 99 doesn’t know who CT-5576 is, fans know him as Captain Gregor.

Gregor was first seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 5, Episode 12 “Missing in Action” on the planet of Abafar. Formerly, he commanded an elite squad of Clone Commandos called Foxtrot Group, but after the disastrous Battle of Sarrish, he was reported as MIA. In reality, Gregor retreated into Space and crash-landed on Abafar, which caused him to lose his memory. Sometime after, he helped a group of Republic droids and Colonel Meebur Gascon escape Separatist droids by blowing up Rhydonium containers and was presumed dead, at least until Star Wars Rebels revealed he was alive and working with Captain Rex. Well, The Bad Batch is here to fill in the gaps in Gregor’s life.

Although there is some debate at first about losing out on payment, Clone Force 99 does decide to put a hold on Cid’s mission and travel to Duro to extract Rex’s friend. However, when they arrive, they quickly discover that their target must have already been taken into Imperial custody. Hunter identifies the hidden Imperial emplacement but is hesitant to enter, but with some timely prompting from Echo, the group — sans Wrecker and Omega — go in and find Gregor in his cell.

And as the group runs from what seems like endless pursuers, fans learn what Gregor has been up to. While this episode doesn’t explain how he survived the Rhydonium explosion, it does explain that, since Order 66, Gregor has been working as a trainer for the Imperial Military. He also reveals to the Bad Batch that the Empire is in the process of replacing the Clone Army with highly qualified soldiers, something Crosshiar’s squad is already testing.

Fortunately, Gregor hasn’t been doing good work training this new army. He never fully committed to the new Empire and has wanted to defect for a while, so he’s been holding his trainees back. But while that’s good news for the galaxy at large, Clone Force 99 has their own set of problems when it comes to escaping.

Gregor reveals that this isn’t actually his first escape attempt. He made it out of the facility the last time he tried, only to be hunted down as he placed the distress beacon. But the facility’s the soldiers have learned from their mistakes, and with that being the case, the group cannot take the same exit and calls for a pick-up. And while their new plan works almost perfectly, Hunter misses his jump onto the shuttle and falls down the side of a mountain before being taken captive. So, with only two episodes left in Season 1, the Bad Batch has to rescue its commander, but at least they have Gregor on their side.

To see Gregor’s return to a galaxy far, far away, Star Wars: The Bad Batch drops new episodes each Friday on Disney+.
