The Batman Movie To Restart Filming In September

Reports from the U.K. indicate Matt Reeves’ The Batman will resume shooting in September following the coronavirus shutdown. The DC Extended Universe movie began filming in England earlier this year, but production was delayed due to the pandemic. The pause in filming caused a release delay, pushing the blockbuster back from June 2021 to October 2021. The Batman will star Robert Pattinson in his debut as the Caped Crusader, taking over from Ben Affleck, who left the role after Justice League.

ZoĆ« Kravitz will appear as Catwoman, while Andy Serkis (Alfred), Jeffrey Wright (James Gordon), Paul Dano (The Riddler), and Colin Farrell (Penguin) are also in the cast. Reeves is helming a script he wrote with Mattson Tomlin. It will follow Batman in his early days as a vigilante, unlike Affleck’s portrayal. It will also have a dark, noir detective movie tone, compared to the bright, campy versions of the 1990s and the epic nature of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy.

Now, Variety reports The Batman will start production again in September. According to insiders on the project, crew began building sets for the shoot in recent weeks in preparation for resuming filming. Cameras are now set to roll again early next month. The Batman reportedly has three months of shooting left to complete, meaning there is a chance filming could run right until the end of 2020, even if things go smoothly from here on out.

With news confirming the first footage from The Batman will debut at this weekend’s DC FanDome, things are looking up for the solo outing after months of delays. Both Kravitz and Pattinson have said they’re desperate to get back on set to shoot, as they believe in the quality of the script and have high hopes for the movie. In the meantime, though, Warner Bros. will have to finish building the sets, a greater task than previously thought.

Due to the strict safety protocols established as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, The Batman will no longer film on location, choosing instead to stay in the controlled environment of a film studio. While this means more pre-production, it should ensure a slightly easier filming process, given the cast and crew won’t have to travel to different locations to shoot. It should also add to the dark, gritty tone of the movie, given that classic noir films used to shoot in tight, claustrophobic studio sets in order to get the lighting just right. Hopefully, even more information about The Batman will be revealed when shooting resumes next month.
