The Batman Penguin Spinoff Show In The Works With Colin Farrell Returning

Colin Farrell’s Penguin is returning in a new Batman spin-off TV show in addition to the Gotham City Police Department spin-off in the works. Farrell is set to make his debut as the DC Comics villain in Matt Reeves’ upcoming movie franchise reboot, though the film will see the character prior to his days as The Penguin when he’s still going by the name of Oswald Cobblepot. The film will see a facially scarred Cobblepot on the rise in Gotham’s criminal underworld and his strive to avoid being called by The Penguin.

The Batman is set in Bruce Wayne’s second year of fighting crime as the titular Dark Knight in which he is faced with a deep web of corruption in Gotham with ties back to his family while also hunting down a serial killer known as The Riddler. Robert Pattinson is leading the film’s ensemble cast alongside Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano as The Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Gotham Police Commissioner Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and Farrell as Cobblepot. Hailing from Matt Reeves, The Batman is set to launch a new franchise, including two sequels and a spin-off series focusing on the GCPD, though now it looks as though that roster is expanding.

Variety has brought word that Colin Farrell’s Penguin is getting his own Batman spin-off series centered on his character, with Farrell also attached to executive produce. The series will reportedly explore his character’s rise through Gotham’s criminal underworld. Lauren LeFranc is attached to pen the script for the series with Warner Bros. Television set to produce for HBO Max.

The announcement of The Batman spin-off series centered on Penguin comes nearly three months after word first broke that the series was in development. The latest news for the series reveals that the early word was accurate for its existence, albeit at the time of first reporting Farrell had not been attached to star in or executive produce the project. If the show were to move forward, it would also mark the second expansion for HBO Max from The Batman with the GCPD show from Matt Reeves and The Ritual’s Joe Barton.

Confirmation of the Penguin spin-off series proves exciting news not only for audiences eager to see the Golden Globe winner’s take on the iconic character, but also for those hopeful of The Batman’s future. Though Warner Bros. has yet to properly announce follow-ups to the film, Reeves has confirmed that the reboot is intended to set up a trilogy while several of the cast members have also confirmed that they have signed on to multiple films, and the development of both series show the studio’s confidence in Reeves’ universe. The wait for The Batman is nearing a close as the film is set to hit theaters on March 4, 2022.
