The Best Movies On Paramount Plus

CBS All Access recently evolved into the new streaming service called Paramount Plus, and here’s the best movies available on it right now. Ever since Netflix set the standard for how to operate a successful streaming outlet, more and more competitors have steadily arisen, most notably Amazon Prime and Hulu. In the last several years though, the streaming wars have been shifted into overdrive, with seemingly every major media conglomerate setting out to try their hand at a branded streaming service.

The floodgates really began to open on that front with the 2019 arrival of Disney Plus, and 2020 saw Warner Media launch HBO Max and NBC Universal launch Peacock, which will soon itself swallow WWE Network. Now, one of the first company-specific streaming options, CBS All Access – launched in 2014 – has transformed into the latest studio-centered service, Paramount Plus. This comes after the 2019 merger of CBS and media behemoth Viacom, Paramount’s parent company. Many would argue that another streaming service is the last thing anyone needs, but at least in this case existing CBS All Access subscribers will benefit.

Paramount Plus officially launched on March 4, 2021, keeping intact the existing CBS All Access catalog of movies and TV shows, and adding even more. Viacom has also assured interested users that the library will grow even bigger over the next few months. Here’s the best movies subscribers can stream right this minute.

The Godfather Trilogy

The Best Movies On Paramount Plus

Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, 1972’s The Godfather is almost unanimously considered one of the greatest films ever made, and features knockout lead performances by Marlon Brando as aging mafia boss Vito Corleone and Al Pacino as his son Michael. The rise to power of both Vito and Michael would be charted in 1974’s equally terrific The Godfather Part 2, while 1990’s The Godfather Part 3 brought the Corleone story to a controversial end. The entire trilogy is available to stream on Paramount Plus.

The Indiana Jones Franchise

The Best Movies On Paramount Plus

Beginning with 1981’s thrilling Raiders of the Lost Ark, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas would create Indiana Jones, one of cinema’s most legendary action heroes. Played by Harrison Ford, Dr. Jones is a college professor by trade, but his real passion is hunting for lost treasures, and kicking Nazi butt along the way. 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and 1989’s Indiana Jones The Last Crusade are both also great. 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is divisive, but the entire franchise is on Paramount Plus.

The Ring (2002)

The Best Movies On Paramount Plus

Easily the best entry in the 2000s Hollywood quest to adapt every big Japanese horror movie for American audiences, The Ring remains a creepy and unsettling piece of entertainment. It’s also proof that a PG-13 rating is not a death sentence for horror. The plot, revolving around a cursed VHS tape, now seems quite outdated, but Naomi Watts’ lead performance holds up, as does Samara the ghost’s scare factor. Mercifully, terrible 2005 sequel The Ring 2 isn’t on Paramount Plus.

Election (1999)

The Best Movies On Paramount Plus

The second feature to be directed by Alexander Payne, Election focuses on the surprisingly nasty election for student body president at a Nebraska High School. Tracy Flick (Reese Witherspoon) is the most likely candidate, but civics teacher Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick) grows to despise her outwardly nice but subtly conniving behavior, and sets out to bring her down, resorting to unethical methods in order to do so. Election is a very dark comedy, but also a hilarious and thought-provoking one, and one of the best movies on Paramount Plus.

Pet Sematary (1989)

The Best Movies On Paramount Plus

One of the most beloved adaptations of a Stephen King novel to date, Pet Sematary does feel a bit dated now, and Dale Midkiff’s performance is iffy, but the scares still pack a punch, and it’s telling that most fans widely prefer it to the better in some ways 2019 remake. A look at the all too real horror of grief through a supernatural lens, Pet Sematary holds up fine. 1992 sequel Pet Sematary 2 is also available on Paramount Plus, although it concerns a different family that encounters the cursed burial ground capable of resurrecting the dead.

Chinatown (1974)

The Best Movies On Paramount Plus

A complex and dramatic mystery filtered through a neo-noir lens, Chinatown is one of the most acclaimed films ever made, although it being directed by the now disgraced Roman Polanski has made it an awkward watch for some. Jack Nicholson stars as private eye Jake Gittes, who’s hired by a woman called Evelyn Mulwray to expose her allegedly adulterous husband. Needless to say, things aren’t remotely what they first seem. Polanski aside, Chinatown is still one of the best movies on Paramount Plus.

Eddie Murphy Raw (1987)

The Best Movies On Paramount Plus

Today, comedy legend Eddie Murphy is probably best known as a movie star, but his 1980s rise to prominence was built just as much on the back of his stand-up career. Eddie Murphy Raw, a concert film, features Murphy at arguably the height of his comedic powers, making an enormous live audience bust a gut laughing. While it’s worth noting that some of Murphy’s material isn’t exactly politically correct by 2021 standards, those who enjoy his work and don’t mind some questionable humor will probably love checking it out on Paramount Plus.

Minority Report (2002)

The Best Movies On Paramount Plus

While not quite as iconic as some of director Steven Spielberg’s earlier classics, Minority Report is still a thrilling, visually striking sci-fi/action extravaganza, and was a critical and commercial smash upon release. Tom Cruise stars John Anderton, a high-ranking cop on Washington, D.C.’s pre-crime unit, which thwarts crimes before they occur. When he’s falsely accused of murder, Anderton enters a race against time to clear his name. Minority Report is a true Spielberg spectacle, and one of the best movies on Paramount Plus.

Jackie Brown (1997)

The Best Movies On Paramount Plus

Jackie Brown isn’t the best movie Quentin Tarantino has directed, but it’s one that probably doesn’t get the love it deserves, and is definitely one of the best movies on Paramount Plus. Blaxploitation icon Pam Grier plays the titular lead, a flight attendant whose side job working for a gun runner played by Samuel L. Jackson ends up getting her into a life-threatening situation. Robert Forster, Bridget Fonda, Michael Keaton, and Robert De Niro also star.

Mission: Impossible Franchise

Once a popular TV series, Tom Cruise would take the Mission: Impossible property to new pop culture heights with his long-running film franchise. Cruise stars as Ethan Hunt, an IMF agent who spends most of the first film on the run after being framed as a traitor. Once he’s back in their good graces in sequels though, his quests don’t get much easier. While Paramount Plus sadly doesn’t have the whole series on it at present, they do have the first three films, and for those interested in their roots, the TV show is there too.
