The Big Bang Theory 10 Times Raj Should Have Been Fired

Although Raj’s career didn’t get as much attention on The Big Bang Theory as Sheldon’s, Leonard’s, Penny’s, or even his love life, there were some pretty big moments that defined it. And while he didn’t win a Nobel Prize, like Sheldon and Amy, he did get on the “30 Under 30 to Watch” list for a discovery he made in season 1. In the final season, he even used his knowledge of astrophysics to secure a second job at the planetarium.

However, for every good thing Raj achieved in his career, there was almost always something bad to counter it. He either got caught up in disasters his friends caused or said the wrong thing at the worst time to the wrong person and landed himself in enough trouble to get him fired from the university.

10 When He Drank At Work

Back in season 4, Raj still had trouble talking to women and could only manage it after a drink. In the episode, “The Boyfriend Complexity,” he had to monitor a telescope at work for 12 hours and Howard joined him to keep him company. While they were playing games in Raj’s lab, Bernadette showed up with a bottle of wine, and Howard advised Raj to drink so he’d be able to talk to her.

After a few drinks too many, he made prank calls to Hawaii where the telescope was set up and his observations were long forgotten. Although drinking on the job wasn’t originally his idea, his actions while under the influence were reprimandable, possibly to the point of termination from his position, because they affected the work he was doing for the university.

9 When He Wasted Time With Dead End Research

In “The Pirate Solution,” Raj told his friends that for six months he hadn’t made any headway with his research on trans-Neptunian objects. Since his visa was tied to his employment at the university, he was afraid that if he spoke up about his work coming to a standstill, he’d be cut off and deported. So, instead, he pretended to continue with the research and spent those six months checking his emails, posting on Facebook, and messing up Wikipedia entries.

As an employee of the university, he had a responsibility to advise them of any snags in research, especially if the school was funding it. By not saying anything all that time, any funds directed to his dead-end research were being wasted, which just isn’t economical for the university. As he said himself, if the university found out, they were going to cut him off.

8 When He Made Inappropriate Comments

While struggling to find a way not to get kicked out of the university or the country, Raj heard of a new research team working on Stellar Evolution in the episode, “The Pirate Solution.” Everything was going well with his interview until they were joined by Dr. Catherine Millstone. Since Raj could only speak to women while intoxicated, he drank some wine but ended up making inappropriate comments.

Sexual harassment should not be tolerated in any workplace and his comments would be grounds for a visit to HR and possible dismissal. Based on a comment Raj made when he was talking to his friends in a later scene, a complaint was filed against him for what he said.

7 The Brobdingnagian Monstrosity

Once Raj and Sheldon started sharing an office, Raj got a huge desk to spite him. They engaged in a battle afterward, including a Nerf gun war, playing loud music, releasing a foul-smelling gas, and burning aroma candles, which resulted in an explosion as the gas Sheldon released was flammable.

The disagreement between the two friends escalated into dangerous and destructive activities that damaged university property and could have seriously harmed them and other people. Since Raj was just as responsible for the commotion as Sheldon, both of them should have been in serious trouble with the university for their irresponsible actions.

6 When He Had The Fight With Neil Tyson

During “The Conjugal Configuration,” Raj was invited on The Weather Channel to talk about an upcoming meteor shower. When he made a joke that they only called him because they couldn’t get Neil deGrasse Tyson, he was stunned to find out he was right. He spent the rest of his time on-air making snarky comments about Neil, which led to the two of them having an online feud.

Since he was introduced on TV as an astrophysicist from Caltech, his behavior not only reflected poorly on him but on the university as well, especially when he engaged in a Twitter war with an esteemed scientist. With social media now being powerful enough to end people’s careers, even on account of posts from many years ago, Raj’s petty Twitter war might have cost him his job.

5 When He Gave Misleading Info About Aliens And The Loch Ness Monster

During one of Raj’s presentations at the planetarium in “The Decision Reverberation,” his question and answer session got derailed into a discussion about the existence of extraterrestrial life, resulting in news articles claiming he found proof of alien life. When he tried to correct that later on and gave an example of the Loch Ness Monster, the headlines said he claimed it was real.

The headlines referred to Raj as an astrophysicist from Caltech, which meant all the scientific inaccuracies being paddled online were associated with the university as much as him. As an institution specializing in science and technology, Caltech had to uphold a reputation of being scientifically accurate, but Raj was jeopardizing that, even though it wasn’t intentional on his part.

4 When He Helped Contaminate The Clean Room

While Leonard and Howard were working on an experiment in the university’s clean room in “The Clean Room Infiltration,” they accidentally left the door open and a bird flew in. Raj joined them to try and help get it out but in the end, they decided to wipe their names from the sign-up sheet and leave the place contaminated.

Due to the contamination, the clean room would have to be shut down for weeks to have filters and other equipment cleaned or replaced. That would cost the university a lot of money and put important research on hold, and not reporting the incident immediately would only delay things further. In this case, Raj wasn’t directly responsible for what had happened, but he could have been in trouble for aiding and abetting Howard and Leonard.

3 The Alex Debacle

What started out as Sheldon’s assistant, Alex, innocently asking Leonard out on a date in the episode, “The Egg Salad Equivalency,” ended with the four guys in the Human Resources office.

Sheldon inadvertently threw them all under the bus, revealing that Raj referred to the HR manager as Brown Sugar. This was only made worse by Raj drinking just before he went to talk to her, especially since it was still working hours and she smelled the alcohol on his breath.

2 When He Solicited Support For Tenure

The Big Bang Theory 10 Times Raj Should Have Been Fired

“The Tenure Turbulence” episode pitted Raj, Leonard, and Sheldon against each other, each competing for a tenured spot. Raj sent the HR manager a link to a 90-minute video talking about his life and how he became an astrophysicist to try and win her favor and support.

While the video was innocent enough, the intentions behind it weren’t. Rather than rely on the merit of his work and reputation, Raj resorted to soliciting a recommendation from her. He, along with the others, basically hounded and harassed her and even though she recommended all of them to the tenure committee, it doesn’t seem like any of them got the position.

1 When He Tampered With Data

During an expedition to the North Pole for some research Howard, Raj, and Leonard lied to Sheldon and tampered with his experiments so he’d get the results he wanted and they could go back home. Unfortunately, Sheldon got ahead of himself and sent emails to the university of his success, so what the guys meant to be a harmless way out of the North Pole became a serious offense.

Tampering with university research like that was irresponsible of Raj and his friends, especially since it resulted in the group deserting the experiments and returning home prematurely and embarrassing Sheldon immensely.
