The Boys Butchers Most Horrifying Kill Could Never Appear On The Show

Warning! Spoilers for The Boys comic book series below!

Billy Butcher has committed some serious atrocities in The Boys comic book series, but his most horrifying kill is so brutal that it never appeared on the show – and for good reason. In The Boys miniseries Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker, Butcher bashes in the head of a super-baby that’s emerged from his pregnant wife, Becky. It’s without question one of the grossest moments from the comics.

In The Boys’ comic book series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, Butcher’s characterization is just as dark, if not darker than the version played by Karl Urban in the Amazon streaming series. Both characters are pushed to join the fight against Supes after tragedy strikes. In the show, Butcher believes his pregnant wife – after being sexually assaulted by Homelander – dies after giving birth to a Supe, but it’s eventually revealed she’s alive and in hiding. Meanwhile, in the comic, Becky actually dies during childbirth, but the scene is somehow more messed up than what was adapted on the show.

While Homelander’s son would survive in the show, Billy actually killed him in the comics. In the miniseries’ fourth issue, Butcher awakens in the middle of the night to see the walls splattered in blood. When he turns around, he sees a baby (with the umbilical cord still attached) floating in the air with red laser eyes. It tries to shoot Butcher, but Billy picked up a lamp and hits the fetus as hard as he can. As the baby screams and shoots red beams out of its eyes, Billy bludgeons it to death with the lamp.

Butcher continually smashes its head in with the lamp, which is shown in graphic detail in the comic. When he turns behind him, he notices that Becky didn’t survive the incident – as he finds her bloodied corpse. It’s disgusting and heartbreaking.

The Boys’ streaming series has never been afraid to push the envelope when it comes to violence. It’s even tackled some of the comics’ most controversial scenes head-on, in a similarly brutal fashion. But rewriting this moment so that both the child and Becky survive (even if Butcher thinks they’ve died) was the right call. Having Butcher bash in the head of a fetus would have crossed a line that the show couldn’t recover from. When it comes to babies, the show has smartly avoided showing them die in a disgusting, bloody way. Butcher’s turn into a monster can still be told in The Boys, but this moment thankfully stayed within the pages of the comics.
