The Boys In The Band 10 Scenes That Will Make You Cry

The Boys in the Band is one of those films designed to operate at a number of different emotional registers, just as in the play (they both have the same cast, in this case). Obviously, there are parts of it that are quite funny, as the various gay men that have gathered in Michael’s apartment trade barbs with one another and make jokes at one another’s expense. There is also a deeper part of the film, however, and it’s very much in touch with its emotions.

In fact, there are quite a few scenes throughout the film that are quite emotional and that are in fact very likely to move the audience to tears.

10 When Bernard Calls His Lover

As part of his cruel attempts to make the party more “fun,” Michael demands that everyone call the one person that they truly loved and tell them so. Bernard, reluctantly, calls the son of his mother’s old boss, hoping to get in touch with her son. Unfortunately, he learns that he’s on a date, and with that knowledge his entire fictional romance comes crashing down. Bernard is quite obviously crushed by the news, and he spends the rest of his time repenting of his choice; it’s a heart-wrenching moment and a crushing sad performance.

9 Emory’s Romantic Story About His Friend

Emory, likewise, is forced to confront his own past, and he ends up calling a dentist with whom he was madly in love as a teenager. The really sad part of the whole scene, however, is Emory’s story about how the person he thought was his friend ended up making a fool of him. It’s a beautifully shot scene, and Robin de Jesus allows the audience to truly feel with Emory as he contends with what is clearly a very painful memory for him, of a hopeless romance.

8 Donald And Michael’s Final Scene

After everyone else has left the party, Donald and Michael share a very powerful and emotionally resonant moment, in which it’s made clear that Donald really does care deeply about Michael (despite all of the latter’s obvious failings). In fact, he seems to be Michael’s truest friend. There’s a potent chemistry between Jim Parsons and Matt Bomer (who is, unsurprisingly, excellent), and it helps to give this scene an additional bit of emotional punch, one that is sure to leave the viewer with a tear in their eye.

7 When Larry Tells Hank He Loves Him

The Boys In The Band 10 Scenes That Will Make You Cry

One of the play’s central conflicts is between Larry and Hank, a couple that are trying to figure out how their relationship is going to work when each of them clearly wants something very different. Ultimately, Larry (the one who has been wanting to be in an open relationship) blurts out that he loves Hank, in his own way.

It’s a raw performance from Andrew Rannells, and it’s a powerful reminder that human relationships are far more complicated than most people are ever willing to acknowledge.

6 When Hank Tells Larry He Loves Him

An equally emotional scene is the one in which Hank, goaded on by Michael, decides to call the one person that he truly loves. It’s a bit of a surprise when he ends up calling Larry, in part because they’ve clearly been so angry with one another during the entirety of the party. However, it’s one of those moments that reveals that, despite their different approaches and desires about their relationship, there truly is something profoundly rich and emotional between the two of them.

5 When Alan Calls His Wife

Of all of the characters, Alan is in some ways the least likable one. Perhaps it’s because he’s straight and has such a condescending attitude toward the other characters, or maybe because it seems like he’s something of a bully. Nevertheless, when he’s finally forced by Michael to call the person he loves, it’s revealed that it’s none other than his wife, and he pours his heart out in a wrenching apology. It’s one of the moments where he becomes a fully fleshed-out character, and it’s quite emotional to watch.

4 Cowboy’s Last Line

The Boys In The Band 10 Scenes That Will Make You Cry

For most of the play, the prostitute Cowboy is something of a punchline for the other characters. Since he’s rather dim, they seem to take a lot of delight in mocking his lack of intelligence and sophistication. However, in his final speaking moment, he tells Harold that he tries to be at least a little intimate as a hired lover, in order to forget that he’s a prostitute. It’s a very emotional moment, particularly since the audience has been given no indication that he really has much of an internal life.

3 When Michael And Alan Fight

The Boys In The Band 10 Scenes That Will Make You Cry

This film excels at showing the contradictory nature of friendship, and one of the most emotional scenes is the one in which Michael has the long-foreshadowed confrontation with Alan (which was probably inevitable, given that Alan still hasn’t said what he intended to tell Michael). He hurls accusations at his friend, and it’s incredibly difficult to watch this friendship imploding. While it’s obviously full of anger and vitriol, there’s also something deeply sad about it as well, and it seems designed to wring tears out of the viewer.

2 When Alan Assaults Emory

The Boys In The Band 10 Scenes That Will Make You Cry

An equally disturbing scene is the one in which Alan ends up punching Emory, mostly because he seems uncomfortable with the fact that the younger man is so flamboyant and clearly comfortable in his skin as a gay man.

For any gay person who has ever had to face that kind of anger in a straight person bent on hurting them, it’s sure to elicit all kinds of feelings, and it’s a potent and troubling reminder of the kinds of violence that gay people still regularly face.

1 Michael’s Last Scene

Once the party concludes, Michael decides that he is going to try to walk off the alcohol and perhaps gain a little peace of mind. The last that the viewer sees of him, he’s running down an alley, and it’s clearly supposed to signify his desire to run away from all of the things that have troubled him, all of the things that have weighed down his life and made him into the embittered person he is. It’s an emotional scene precisely because it shows his desperate loneliness and struggle to be happy with himself, and it’s one of Jim Parsons’ finest performances.
