The Boys Parodies Marvel’s What If? By Turning Hughie Into Homelander

The Boys, Amazon’s satirical comic book adaptation, lightly parodies Marvel’s What If…? by presenting Hughie and other protagonists as villains.

Marvel’s What If…? is lightly parodied by The Boys. Adapted from the eponymous comic book created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, the series centers on a team of dysfunctional civilians that join forces to battle against corrupt and immoral superpowered individuals. Since premiering in 2019 on Amazon Prime Video, the adaptation has consistently grown in popularity. For its second season, which wrapped in October of last year, The Boys was nominated for Outstanding Drama at the Primetime Emmy Awards.

Part of the reason for the show’s appeal is the murky lines between hero and villain. Although the dysfunctional heroes include Hughie (Jack Quaid), who could be fairly described as a conventional and likable protagonist, the team also includes Karl Urban’s Billy Butcher. As the would-be leader of the group, Butcher is often unafraid to do the wrong thing to reach what he deems as the right result. On the opposite end, despite the fact that The Boys features some reprehensible villains, like Homelander (Antony Starr), there are more complicated characters such as Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott) and A-Train (Jessie T. Usher).

In a new Twitter post, the official account for The Boys took some inspiration from Marvel’s What If…? to imagine an alternate reality where Hughie is Homelander. It also imagines Tomer Kapon’s Frenchie as The Deep instead of Chace Crawford. Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) is imagined as Queen Maeve, while Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso) takes the part of A-Train. As a series, The Boys has regularly taken shots at pop culture and has found ways to ding both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC’s films. Some of the jabs are more referential, like the fact that the Amazon series appears to have its own expansive universe. Other barbs, like mocking Marvel for its occasionally clumsy attempts at representation, can be more pointed. That lighthearted bent holds true off-camera, as well. After being nominated at the Emmys, The Boys posted a humorous video that seemed to subtly acknowledge the fact that the satirical adaptation didn’t have the best chances of actually winning.

Still, heading into season 3, which has already wrapped filming, The Boys has moved from strength to strength. With a highly-anticipated Herogasm episode, as well as the addition of new cast members like Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy, the third installment of the adaptation may be the most successful yet. And perhaps, further down the line, the show could toy around with an experimental ‘what if?’ episode of its own. Fans have already argued, after all, that Homelander and Butcher are mirror images of each other.
