The Boys Season 3 Showrunner Was Shocked By Show’s Emmy Nomination

The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke admits that he didn’t expect the show to be nominated for Best Outstanding Drama. Adapted from the eponymous comic book created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, the Prime Video series centers on a team of dysfunctional civilians that join forces to battle against corrupt and immoral superpowered individuals. The show features an ensemble cast that includes Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Erin Moriarty, and Antony Starr.

Since premiering in 2019, The Boys has seen a big growth in its popularity. That was exemplified when the series ended up with several nominations at the Emmys. The adaptation was represented in technical categories, such as Sound Mixing and Visual Effects, in addition to Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for the song “Never Truly Vanish”. The Boys was also nominated for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series for the season 2 finale, which was penned by Rebecca Sonnenshine. But as Kripke explained in a new interview, one nomination surprised him in particular.

In an interview for TV Guide Magazine’s Sci-Fi & Fantasy Special Collector’s Issue (via TV Insider), the showrunner reflected on the Emmy nominations for The Boys. Kripke noted that he’d hoped the actors would get recognized for their work, and that he’d expected to do well in the technical categories, but confessed that he didn’t anticipate a nomination in the Outstanding Drama Series sphere. Kripke’s quote is included below.

“It’s surreal and amazing and I’m so grateful. I was hoping maybe one of our actors got noticed and that we’d do all right in the technical awards — which we did [Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, Sound Mixing, Special Visual Effects and Writing noms] — because the team is doing incredible work. But I definitely did not see a best drama nomination coming.”

The comic book series certainly had a lot of fun with its Emmy nods. Most notably, perhaps winking at the fact they were unlikely to win Outstanding Drama, The Boys lightly parodied their fellow nominees ahead of the big ceremony. But, beyond the humor, Kripke’s comments do get at an unfortunate truth that genre shows which skew more sci-fi and supernatural do not typically get recognized by major television awards. This is somewhat beginning to shift, with hits like The Boys, WandaVision, and The Mandalorian entering the mix, but there was a time relatively recently when a groundbreaking supernatural drama like Buffy the Vampire Slayer could not enter into contention for the big categories at the Emmys, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and Golden Globes.

And even now, as fortunes have shifted, likely reflecting a change in pop culture at large, it is curious that The Boys did not receive any acting nods. Considering how it’s worthy enough to be counted among TV’s best dramas, it stands to reason that the cast plays a big factor in that success. Still, as the adaptation expands with more spinoffs, and a forthcoming third season, hopefully it maintains the same quality and gains more recognition.
