The Boys [SPOILER] Isnt Dead — How They Can Return In Season 3

Caution: Spoilers ahead for The Boys’ season 2 finale

Stormfront took a major loss in the final episode of The Boys season 2, but is she actually dead, and could she return in season 3? Amazon’s The Boys introduced a host of new characters in season 2, from The Church of the Collective’s Hugh Jackman lookalike leader to the Russian superhero known as Love Sausage. Undoubtedly the most important addition, however, was Aya Cash’s Stormfront. In the original The Boys comic series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, Stormfront is a male character and leads the Payback superhero group. Hailing from Nazi Germany, Stormfront was the very first Compound V subject before making the trip Stateside, but is brutally kicked to death by Butcher’s Boys.

While Amazon’s The Boys gender-flips the Stormfront character, the nasty origin story of the comic books is amplified to tie into the social context of 2020, making the live-action version of Stormfront even more sinister. Possessing the same powers as her comic incarnation, Aya Cash’s Stormfront is still the first successful Compound V subject and a raging Nazi, but also the wife of Frederick Vought. She spent the 20th century in a variety of superhero personas (including Liberty) but finally jumped into The Seven in The Boys season 2. Seeking to continue the true will of Vought’s founder, Stormfront whipped up a right-wing frenzy and attempted to create an army of supes that would make her dream of a white supremacist motherland a reality.

When The Boys season 2 comes to an end, Stormfront is in horrific shape, but it’s not entirely clear whether she lives or dies. Homelander states at a press conference that she was alive and in custody — but Vought has covered up Supe death before, most notably with Translucent in season 1. According to The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke, Stormfront is alive. The question remains: alive in what condition? Will the villainous Supe resume the primary antagonist role, or is she relegated to some Vought lab? Here’s everything currently known about Stormfront’s fate, and how she might potentially return in The Boys season 3.

Stormfront’s “Death” In The Boys Season 2 Explained

The Boys [SPOILER] Isnt Dead — How They Can Return In Season 3

Stormfront’s plan in The Boys season 2 relied entirely on her public reputation. Vought’s secret Nazi spent years cultivating a dedicated social media following and assembling her “meme team” to build a platform from which she could manipulate the population. Using Homelander’s super-terrorists to her advantage, Stormfront stoked fear of immigrants and spearheaded calls to create more supes and fight back against this imaginary wave of invaders. Alas, Stormfront’s demise became inevitable when the Church of the Collective and Victoria Neuman conspired to reveal the Nazi truth behind The Seven’s newest darling. Nothing gets a celebrity cancelled quicker than being part of Adolf Hitler’s inner circle, and Stormfront’s support quickly evaporated.

On the warpath after being publicly disgraced and ruthlessly beaten up by Kimiko, Queen Maeve and Starlight, Stormfront tried to steal away Ryan, the world’s first natural-born supe. Despite his fearless bravado, Butcher is easily tossed aside, leaving Stormfront to sadistically choke out Becca. Triggered at seeing his mother under attack, Ryan unleashes his laser vision. Stormfront loses both legs and an arm, while her face is horribly disfigured. Lying on the forest floor, Stormfront’s eyes are glazed as she recites German, suggesting some level of head trauma in addition to her extensive physical injuries. Eventually, Stormfront trails off and goes silent, suggesting that she gave in to her woeful condition and finally died after years eluding the Reaper.

The Boys season 2 foreshadowed Stormfront’s death as far back as episode 5. While trying to seduce Homelander, the Nazi bride instructs him to shoot laser vision beams directly into her chest. Homelander is reluctant, since his attacks usually cut through flesh with ease, but the blast merely sizzles Stormfront’s skin as she derives pleasure from the pain. Crucially, Stormfront assures her new boyfriend “I don’t break easy” which sets up Ryan being able to slice straight through her in the finale. It’s clear that Stormfront has never suffered damage on this level before, and her injuries in The Boys’ season 2 finale could, therefore, prove fatal.

Why Stormfront Is Still Alive

The Boys [SPOILER] Isnt Dead — How They Can Return In Season 3

In one of The Boys season 2’s final scenes, Homelander addresses the public alongside Stan Edgar, blaming everything on Stormfront and assuring the world that she was being held in a “secure location.” Vought aren’t exactly known for their honesty and transparency, so this story could be a complete fabrication. Perhaps the company didn’t want to admit that another one of their superheroes had been defeated so soon after Translucent, or maybe Homelander couldn’t bring himself to acknowledge that his illegitimate son had brutally killed his girlfriend. Despite the natural skepticism, it is possible that Stormfront remains alive by the end of The Boys season 2, and is, as Homelander states, locked in a high-security facility similar to the prison in Vought Tower.

Stormfront’s defeat was very much inconclusive. If her head had been exploded by Neuman, or if Homelander had tore out her heart, perhaps viewers could be assured that Stormfront was properly dead. Since her body is (mostly) intact and she remains chatting away in German, however, The Boys has a built-in route to bring Stormfront back for season 3, and Eric Kripke has confirmed the character hasn’t been killed-off, referring to her as “Stumpfront.”

Stormfront’s survival is likely due to her Compound V abilities. Over 100 years old, Stormfront is apparently immune to aging and disease in The Boys, and demonstrates an impressive regenerative factor when her boobs recover from Homelander’s heat blasts. The Boys hasn’t fully explored the extent of Stormfront’s regenerative capabilities, but with enough time, it’s plausible that she could recover from Ryan’s attack, regrowing her limbs (and the eye Becca Butcher stabbed) and healing the chunks of flesh ripped out by Ryan’s laser eyes.

Interestingly, a precedent for Stormfront’s return is set by the original The Boys comic series. In the Garth Ennis story, Lamplighter is killed in the aftermath of the incident with Mallory’s grandchildren, but Vought keep his corpse and bring their supe back to life. The experiment doesn’t quite work, turning Lamplighter into a mindless zombie rather than his former self. Shawn Ashmore’s Lamplighter committed suicide earlier in The Boys season 2, and his body looked too charred to be reanimated, but the Amazon series could repurpose his story for Stormfront, with Vought helping the Nazi recover, but accidentally turning her into a physical abomination, instead of just a moral one.

From a narrative perspective, including Stormfront in The Boys season 3 seems like an obvious move. Aya Cash proved extremely popular in season 2 and immediately integrated herself with the rest of the cast. Stormfront’s value extends far beyond a single season, and while she may no longer be a member of The Seven, there are many storytelling paths for Stormfront to take in The Boys’ future seasons.

Stormfront’s Possible Role In The Boys Season 3

The Boys [SPOILER] Isnt Dead — How They Can Return In Season 3

If Stormfront borrows Lamplighter’s comic story and becomes a mindless slave of Vought, she can’t simply return to the public eye under another name. Vought might’ve been able to cover up her historic crimes as Liberty, but in the age of smartphones, it wouldn’t take long for a member of the public to recognize the super-powered Nazi who fooled the world. But Vought could use their revived Stormfront as a secret assassin, taking out the company’s enemies from the shadows. Given Stormfront’s racist philosophy, it would be fascinating to see her brainwashed into serving as Stan Edgar’s lackey, and The Boys season 3 could then end on the cliffhanger of Stormfront finally regaining her memories.

Perhaps the more interesting story would be if Stormfront not only survives in The Boys season 3, but also retains her personality and memories. With her plan for racially segregated world domination in tatters, Stormfront would be gunning for revenge against Vought, Homelander, Ryan and The Boys, and this Stormfront would be entirely different compared to the character in season 2. Instead of hiding behind a social media-driven facade, a vengeful Stormfront in The Boys season 3 would be an outright supervillain, not trying to attract followers or lead rallies, just trying to kill her enemies.

A resurgent, scarred, deformed Stormfront hunting down The Boys would be the perfect motivation for the band to get back together. The various members go their own way at the end of The Boys season 2 and Hughie quits altogether. But faced with one of their greatest enemies returned from the dead, The Boys (even Hughie) would be forced to unite just to stay alive, potentially even leading to a temporary alliance with Vought, who surely wouldn’t want their disgraced Nazi supe parading around freely.
