WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 7 episode, streaming now on Disney+.

In the final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Ashoka is recruited by her enemy, Bo-Katan for a mission to free Mandalore from the clutches of Maul. Ashoka and Bo-Katan haven’t had the best relationship, as the former terrorist has been responsible for a lot of terrible crimes. Yet, these former adversaries have changed greatly over the course of the series and now find themselves on the same side of this galactic conflict. So, why did Bo-Katan choose Ahsoka to aid her in her mission?

Bo-Katan made her first appearance in the Season 4 Episode, “A Friend In Need.” She was a lieutenant serving under Pre Vizsla’s Death Watch, a terrorist group that sought to return Mandalore to its former glory. She originally joined the group because she disagreed with her sister, Duchess Satine Kryze, and how her pacifist government stripped Mandalore of its warrior’s pride.

In that episode, Lux Bonteri was taken hostage by the Seperartist after declaring that Count Dooku murdered his mother. After a holo conversation with Dooku, Ashoka rescues him from the droids and they land on the planet Carlac. Unbeknown to Count Dooku, Lux had a device on him that secretly tracked the location of the holo communication. Lux had Dooku’s location and he offered to give that information to Death Watch to avenge the death of his mother. The group shares no love for Dooku after their prior attempt to take over Mandalore failed. Death Watch wants revenge on Count Dooku and the information about his whereabouts was too valuable a prize to pass up.

Bo-Katan leads Lux, Ashoka and R2-D2 to an outpost housing Pre Vizsla and the rest of their compatriots. Vizsla and his crew have occupied a village and have taken the women there as slaves. During a celebration, the village men demand the return of the captives and Vizsla acquiesces. He fulfills his promise but brutally murders the villagers and burns down their village. Tired of this senseless slaughter, Ashoka reveals herself, but she’s taken as a prisoner. While awaiting her execution, R2-D2 and Lux cause a distraction that allows Ashoka to frees herself from captivity and fight off the members of Death Watch. The gang finds a speeder and tries to escape towards their ship, but Bo-Katan is on their trail. After a grueling fight, Ashoka defeats Bo and manages to escape the planet with R2-D2 and Lux.

Later in Clone Wars, Death Watch still seeking to restore Mandalore to its former glory, allies themselves with Darth Maul to form the Shadow Collective. This criminal alliance stages terrorist attacks on key locations on Mandalore to undermine the public support for Duchess Satine. Death Watch repeatedly takes these criminals into custody, and with public support on their side, they oust Satine from control. Pre Vizsla initially declares himself the leader of Mandalore, but he’s promptly defeated by Maul who declares himself the de-facto ruler of the planet.

Refusing to accept Maul’s leadership, Bo-Katan and her forces betray him and mount a rescue attempt to save Satine but fail. Soon after, Obi-Wan Kenobi arrives at Mandalore to save Duchess Satine but she’s tragically killed by Maul, engulfing the planet into a civil war. A grieving Bo still reeling from her sister’s death, helps Obi-Wan escape the planet and he promises to send help to retake Mandalore from Maul.
