The Conjuring 2 expanded its haunting universe by adding the demonic antagonist known mainly as the Nun. Throughout the film, Ed and Lorraine Warren are trying to solve a case in London involving a spirit terrorizing a family in their home. The spirit in question is believed to be someone who died in the house, but it’s later revealed that the Nun had been pulling strings in a major twist. The only way to defeat the demon is to learn its name, which was quietly teased throughout the film.
Known as Valak, the demon is a powerful entity explored in the prequel film, The Nun. There, it was revealed that the creature had spent hundreds of years sealed away before being freed in the 1950s. Over the next two decades, it possessed a man who later encountered the Warrens, putting them on a path that led them to the case from the original Conjuring film.
The Nun’s presence is one of the most powerful in the entire Conjuring Universe. As such, it takes Lorainne the entirety of the film to decipher its name. However, the Warren’s home serves as the location for multiple Easter eggs that disclose the demon’s name for the audience. For most, it’s nearly impossible to catch on the first viewing but, once discovered, becomes hard to miss.
In The Conjuring 2, the first two mentions of the Nun’s true name are with Ed and Lorainne over breakfast. Ed holds his coffee with the painting of the Nun in the background. To the bottom left, some arts and crafts letters spell out the name “Valak.” Lorainne is also shown with a cup of tea, and next to her on the wall is a heart that spells “love” with a prominent V and the letters “A-L-A-K” directly below the heart.
The demon’s name can be spotted again while Lorainne and her daughter are in the study. As Lorainne reads her Bible, the name “Valak” is spelled with large, wooden letters on the bookshelf. Directly next to her daughter is a friendship bracelet that also divulges the demon’s name. While the name on the bracelet is difficult to see, it, along with the other examples, serve as the perfect physical representation of how the demon is hiding in plain sight.
The Nun is a constant presence in the Warren’s life due to their powerful connection to the supernatural. Placing its name throughout the house is a way for it to taunt the Warrens, specifically Lorainne, as they remain clueless about the plans the entity has in store for them. Revealing its name also displays the power that the demon has by manipulating the material world and following Lorainne and Ed to London. The Easter eggs are a fun way for The Conjuring 2 to speak to the audience while adding to the growing tension lingering throughout the film.
