When a horror series is as long-running as The Conjuring universe is, it becomes quite the task to keep the fear factor high. Still, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It did a remarkable job and continued the franchise’s knack for bringing in scary scenes.

Ed and Lorraine Warren faced off against a witch known as the Occultist, who unleashed a demon to possess a young man named Arne to wreak havoc. All in all, the movie had some memorable frightening moments that will remain firm in viewers’ minds. Some scenes were definitely scarier than others, and it’s worth seeing how they all stack up.

10 The Occultist’s Haunting Of Arne

After Arne invited the demon into his body, the Occultist also gained access to him. While in his house, Arne thought he heard something and noticed a gaping hole in the room’s wall that was rotting away. The scene built up tension to make it seem as if Arne’s eye would be attacked while he was looking inside, but nothing happened.

However, the moment Arne stood up and turned around, the Occultist appeared out of nowhere to initiate a huge jump scare that saw Arne scream in terror as she grabbed him by the mouth. This scene may have been very short, but that moment of fright was definitely memorable.

9 The Occultist’s Possession Of Ed

There have been more than a few times Patrick Wilson has been possessed in his horror movies, although Ed Lorraine seemed too strong a protagonist to fall for it. This is what happened in the climax of The Conjuring 3, though, as Ed wandered the Occultist’s lair.

Just when he thought he saw Lorraine and thought she was running toward him, the Occultist materialized out of Lorraine’s visage and came straight for Ed by blowing her curse at his face. Not only was this unexpected, but the Occultist’s appearance itself seemed like a specter on the hunt.

8 The Occultist’s Killing Of Father Kastner

Father Kastner’s office contained various hints toward the identity of the Occultist, which he confirmed near the end by revealing that he was her adoptive father. When he realized she had gone too far, Father Kastner attempted to help the Warrens until he was confronted by the Occultist.

The Conjuring movies have largely steered clear of straight-up violence, which is why this scene is hard to watch as the Occultist walked into the shadows to appear behind Father Kastner and brutally slice his throat to kill him. It’s the shock of seeing such spilling of blood in this unexpected fashion that made this moment so chilling.

7 David Getting Targeted By The Demon

In a flashback to how the haunting began, young David was shown exploring his new house and found a waterbed. Excited, the boy fell onto the bed to enjoy it when a face began to take shape from behind his shoulder.

This horrifying sight was the least of anyone’s worries, however, as the demon’s arm then burst through the bed to grab David, intent on pulling him into the water’s depths. Slow-burners like this are The Conjuring’s trademark brand of scares and this was the scariest way the demon could have been introduced.

6 Arne’s Hallucinations In The Psych Ward

Arne was sent to work as a janitor in a psych ward as part of his punishment during his trial, and he began hearing strange noises. When he turned around slowly, he saw one of the patients sitting up and staring at him. For some reason, the man began singing a song with no explanation and seemingly without any intent.

A nervous Arne could only stare back when the man flashed an eerie grin, at which point a ghoul-like being grabbed Arne’s jaw from behind. This was a creative way for the movie to present another jump scare, as the patient’s creepy singing brought in a sense of foreboding.

5 The Killing Of Bruno

On paper, a character getting stabbed may sound like nothing special for a horror movie. However, The Conjuring 3 showed the event from Arne’s point of view, making it all too real. As it happened, Arne began hallucinating while Bruno and Debbie invited him for a dance.

The scene intelligently had Bruno act rather aggressively to convince viewers that Arne attacked him due to Bruno turning into a ghoul. The next cut to Arne walking alone on a road with blood on his clothes and ghastly white eyes was confirmation that Arne had been the monster all along as Bruno’s mangled body was shown over the next few seconds.

4 Lorraine’s Recollection Of The Girls’ Deaths

In this instance, the fear factor came from looking at Lorraine’s gift from a third-person point of view, as she recollected the scene of the murder. The scene began with Lorraine witnessing the killing in the past, only for the next angle to show Lorraine emulating the same moves.

In addition, Lorraine had the look of a fiendish murderer, as she brought down the knife she felt in her hand that she stabbed the air repeatedly with. It was a way for the movie to show the brutality of the killing without actually displaying the blood.

3 Arne’s Exorcism

This played out simultaneously with Ed being under the Occultist’s spell, as Arne was being exorcised from the demon. Unfortunately, the demon proved too powerful due to the curse, and Arne was lifted in midair while Father Newman tried to complete the exorcism.

The most fear-inducing aspect of this scene arrived when the demon outright blew out the hospital’s windows, following which made Arne pick up a shard and nearly slice his own neck off. Of course, the cracking of Arne’s bones also made this hard to both witness and listen to as total calamity struck.

2 Attack From The Morgue’s Corpse

Gross-out horror is another area The Conjuring universe hadn’t fully ventured into until The Devil Made Me Do It. The Occultist’s curse made Ed think he was watching a cadaver come to life and attack him, which is a lot more horrifying than it sounds.

That’s because the body was still rotting away and the corpse’s decomposition was particularly highlighted. Along with that, the true terror it struck was when the body screamed and ran toward Ed, and it was as if the cadaver was running toward the viewers themselves.

1 David’s Botched Exorcism

The opening scene of The Conjuring 3 featured the strangest case Ed and Lorraine tackled, as per Ed’s own admission. It’s never easy seeing a child in pain, and David’s was particularly excruciating as the boy shrieked his lungs out while the demon contorted his body in painful ways.

It ventured into complete horror territory when the spirit manifested into David’s features, as the boy’s body turned into a demon itself and sprang onto Ed to attack him. It was truly like staring into the face of the devil itself, and Arne’s invitation for the demon to possess him to set up the rest of the movie to bring on all the scares it had in store.
