The Conners’ Controversial Roseanne In Hell Joke Is A Perfect Tribute

For the first time in a while, The Conners mentioned Roseanne by controversially implying her character was in hell, and the joke was a perfect tribute to her, despite the divided audience reaction. The Conners does not have an easy relationship with its former star, Roseanne Barr. When the show began its long life, it was as the sitcom Roseanne in 1988. After running for nine seasons, Roseanne was canceled in 1997 before being revived to critical success in 2017.

However, Roseanne soon became The Conners when star Roseanne Barr’s racist remarks led to her being fired from the show. Her character was swiftly killed off, but in the four seasons since then, The Conners has had a Roseanne problem wherein characters barely reference the former major star of the series. It might be understandable that the creators of The Conners are reluctant to mention Roseanne, but one recent episode proved that the show could pull off a fitting tribute to her without much fanfare.

The Conners “Yard Sale, Phone Fail, And a College Betrayal” (season 4, episode 8) caused something of a stir online when the series suggested that the show’s former star Roseanne is in hell. However, the joke was perfectly fitting for Roseanne’s snarky legacy. The character was a sardonic wit who never pulled her punches even when mocking her nearest and dearest, so the bracing gag is a fitting tribute to her character’s memory. The line was set up by Roseanne’s former husband Dan saying that the family would burn their old furniture, sending it “up to Heaven,” which prompted Becky to add that, if the smoke instead went down to hell, then at least her mother would get her furniture back.

It is a cutting gag, and the punchline may have been deemed too mean-spirited to work on many other family sitcoms. However, despite the central family loving each other, Roseanne was always relentless in her criticism of the Conner clan and the rest of the family gave as good as they got, something that The Conners has kept alive across its four seasons. As such, Roseanne’s children joking that she ended up in hell fits the tone of the series and acts less as an insult to her former actor and more as an effective tribute to the fictional character she played.

Roseanne wouldn’t have wanted the Conners to go soft on her, and although The Conners struggles with Roseanne’s legacy at times, this joke proved that the show knows how to stay true to her character, despite the unfortunate circumstances that led to her offscreen death. Since Roseanne and The Conners alike both made light of everything from Dan’s weight to Becky’s drinking problem, avoiding any jokes at the expense of Roseanne would have been a jarring choice and could have made her absence all the more conspicuous and unavoidably awkward. Thus, The Conners implying that Roseanne is in hell may be viewed as a mean gag, but that makes it all the more fitting as a tribute to the legacy of the beloved sitcom character.
