The Conners Season 4 Why Some Characters Were Missing From Dan’s Wedding

An executive producer on The Conners explains why some key characters were missing from the wedding of Dan and Louise. The spinoff of Roseanne featured a big storyline recently, devoting an episode to the wedding of Dan Conner (John Goodman) and Louise Goldufski (Katey Segal). Though she made her debut in The Conners season 1, and expressed her romantic feelings early on, Louise was initially introduced as a friend of Dan’s from back in high school. Still reeling from the sudden passing of his wife Roseanne, it took Dan a long time to fully embrace the idea of entering into another relationship.

But, in The Conners season 4, the couple finally got to walk down the aisle. The moment was not without its complications, however, especially as a dangerous tornado threatened to put a stop to the ceremony. Fortunately, the minister’s absence was filled by Jackie (Laurie Metcalf). Previously ordained online, Jackie was able to officiate for her former brother-in-law. Though the wedding naturally included appearances from regular cast members on The Conners and other familiar faces, some key characters were noticeably absent.

In an interview with TVLine, those absences were addressed. Executive producer Bruce Helford spoke at length about the wedding, confirming that the tornado plot wasn’t a reference to Roseanne. He also talked about why important recurring characters – like Dan’s friend Chuckie Mitchell (James Pickens Jr., who plays Dr. Richard Webber on Grey’s Anatomy) and Roseanne’s mother, Beverly Harris (Estelle Parsons) – were not present for the ceremony. Helford’s quote is below.

“There were a couple of things: First, the availability of the actors. James Pickens Jr., for instance, has this really hardcore schedule over on Grey’s Anatomy, and it’s very hard for Estelle Parsons to travel right now, so that was all in the midst of the discussion… There would have been a lot of those people, but they weren’t available. We also had in mind that we didn’t want to crowd the stage during COVID.”

Other characters that did not make an appearance for the wedding include Crystal (Natalie West) and Geena (Maya Lynne Robinson), both of whom recurred on Roseanne and reprised their roles for The Conners. But, as Helford explains, the ABC sitcom had to account for the actors’ other projects and the realities of filming during COVID-19. Still, given that Dan and Louise’s wedding was nearly derailed by a tornado, the show has a compelling reason for why so many important characters wouldn’t be able to attend the important event.

For many fans, there remains a question of how much the show should look to the past or whether it should forge ahead altogether. Fellow executive producer Dave Caplan noted that the spinoff did its best to handle the loss of Roseanne with care and it was promised that the series would continue to touch on how the loss still affects the characters. In a way, it reflects the memorable original sitcom that aired for so many years. But four seasons in, The Conners has shown its own staying power.
