The Dark Knight 10 Relentless Villains As Terrifying As The Joker

Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight is a brilliant epic that changed the comic book genre forever. But even with all the amazing aspects, the first thing most people think of when it comes to the movie is Heath Ledger’s iconic performance as Joker.

Ledger took a villain who had been brought to life memorably before and gave it his own spectacular spin. This version of Joker is one of the most terrifying villains in cinema history simply because he seems unstoppable. He is without remorse or reason and only cares about setting fire to the world. But as unique a villain as he is, there are similarly relentless bad guys just as scary as the Joker.

10 Alonzo Harris – Training Day (2001)

The Dark Knight 10 Relentless Villains As Terrifying As The Joker

Though Denzel Washington is not often known for playing villains, he proved he was more than capable with his Oscar-winning role in Training Day. Washington plays a corrupt Los Angeles detective taking a young rookie on a tour around the most dangerous areas of the city.

While Alonzo first seems to be a violent cop who is willing to bend the rules, his true evil gradually reveals itself. He manipulates his young partner at every turn before attempting to have him killed. The power of the job has gone to Alonzo’s head so he thinks he is invincible.

9 Thanos – Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

The Dark Knight 10 Relentless Villains As Terrifying As The Joker

There is nothing as scary as a villain who thinks they are the good guy. The MCU created one of their greatest villains with the Mad Titan known as Thanos. After being hinted at for several films, Thanos finally stepped into the spotlight in Avengers: Infinity War and showed how formidable he was.

After witnessing the Marvel heroes save the day time and time again, it was truly unsettling to see a villain come along who could bulldoze his way through them in his path towards wiping out half of the universe.

8 Frank Booth – Blue Velvet (1986)

The Dark Knight 10 Relentless Villains As Terrifying As The Joker

Leave it to a filmmaker like David Lynch to create one of the most unsettling villains of all time. Blue Velvet is the story of a young man who uncovers a violent criminal conspiracy unfolding in his suburban community with a madman named Frank Booth at the center of it all.

Frank kidnaps the husband of a local lounge singer and turns her into his prisoner. He is a deranged man who seems to always be on the edge of murderous rage, making him a totally unpredictable and terrifying person to be around.

7 Nurse Ratched – One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975)

The Dark Knight 10 Relentless Villains As Terrifying As The Joker

The Oscar-winning drama One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest takes place in a mental hospital filled with colorful characters. But while the patients are mostly just troubled individuals who need help, it is Nurse Ratched, their supposed caregiver, who is the most dangerous.

Nurse Ratched sees herself as superior to all the patients and seems to enjoy her position of power. She doesn’t allow her authority to be questioned and doesn’t really care for the well-being of the patients. She drives one of them to suicide and has another lobotomized just to maintain her control.

6 Agent Smith – The Matrix (1999)

The Dark Knight 10 Relentless Villains As Terrifying As The Joker

The groundbreaking sci-fi film The Matrix introduced the idea that our reality is actually just a simulation run by machines. Policing the simulation are tools of the machines known as “agents.” Agent Smith is their leader and a rather scary one, despite his calm demeanor.

What makes Agent Smith so formidable is that he controls the world the heroes are in. He is allowed to be as powerful and deadly as he wants. The fact that he also has grown sentient and wants to escape makes him all the more frightening.

5 John Doe – Se7en (1995)

The Dark Knight 10 Relentless Villains As Terrifying As The Joker

Though John Doe only appears on screen in the final act of Se7en, he still cements himself as one of the most unsettling movie villains ever. Throughout the film, the audience follows two detectives investigating Doe’s killings which are inspired by the Seven Deadly Sins.

Doe seems to be unstoppable in his horrific work but suddenly turns himself in. It’s then revealed that Doe sees himself as doing some kind of holy work that will change the world. It becomes even more shocking when he reveals how he plans to finish off his perceived masterpiece.

4 Max Cady – Cape Fear (1991)

The Dark Knight 10 Relentless Villains As Terrifying As The Joker

Martin Scorsese took on this remake of a classic thriller and also delivered one of the most villainous characters in all of his films. Robert De Niro stars in Cape Fear as Max Cady, a man released from prison who then makes it his mission to get revenge on the lawyer he blames for his incarceration.

At every turn, no matter how sadistic or cruel his actions, Cady thinks he is just in his choices. He doesn’t care about anything else in the world except vengeance against this man and his family.

3 Michael Myers – Halloween (1978)

The Dark Knight 10 Relentless Villains As Terrifying As The Joker

There have been plenty of slasher movie villains who seem to be unstoppable, but Michael Myers in Halloween seems to have inspired most of them. After killing his sister on Halloween night as a child, Myers returns to his hometown of Haddonfield to continue his killing spree.

Without ever hearing his voice or even getting a good look at his face, Michael Myers seems more like a monster than a man. His actions seem to have no motive, he is without remorse, and the iconic ending suggests he is not easy to take down.

2 T-1000 – Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)

The Dark Knight 10 Relentless Villains As Terrifying As The Joker

Originally, Arnold Schwarzenegger played the unstoppable killer cyborg in James Cameron’s The Terminator. Cameron cleverly subverted expectations in the sequel in which he had Schwarzenegger play the protector trying to save John Connor from a new threat.

The new Terminator, known as the T-1000, is an even more effective villain. He is an advanced model with a liquid metal body that allows him to shapeshift and produce deadly weapons. He is nearly impossible to kill and his emotionless pursuit of his targets is extremely creepy.

1 Anton Chigurh – No Country For Old Men (2007)

Just like Joker in The Dark Knight, Anton Chigurh is a villain who does not take sides. He operates in his own world with his own strange rules that often results in people getting killed.

When a man finds a suitcase full of with money in the desert and takes it for himself, Chigurh is hired to find him. He does not want the money himself and even kills the people who hired him. But he still pursues his target relentlessly and kills those who get in his way. He is like a deadly shadow who takes out anyone who has the simple misfortune of meeting him.
