The Dark Knight’s Anthony Michael Hall Riddler Rumor Explained

Here’s how the rumor Anthony Michael Hall was playing The Riddler in The Dark Knight began. Batman Begins was Christopher Nolan’s first blockbuster and revived the Batman movie franchise nearly a decade after the acidic response to 1997’s Batman & Robin. Nolan’s approach to the material was to ground it in reality as much as possible, and he filled his cast with respected performers from Christian Bale as the title character to Michael Caine, Cillian Murphy and Gary Oldman.

While Batman Begins repaired the reputation of the series, The Dark Knight is commonly considered a classic of the genre. From Heath Ledger’s iconic take on The Joker to an almost endless array of great performances, lines of dialogue and setpieces, it was a game-changer for comic book movies. Nolan and his cast returned with 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises to round out the trilogy, and while it didn’t receive the same level of praise afforded its predecessor, it was another huge hit.

Christopher Nolan’s choice of villains in his trilogy tended to be grounded too, so nobody expected Clayface or Mr. Freeze to show up. One bad guy a lot of fans thought would make an appearance is The Riddler, with actors from Leonardo DiCaprio to David Tennant being linked to the role. Of course, the character didn’t ultimately appear in the trilogy at all. Nolan also had a habit of hiring prominent actors from the 1980s for key roles in the trilogy, including Matthew Modine in The Dark Knight Rises and The Breakfast Club’s Anthony Michael Hall in The Dark Knight.

Anthony Michael Hall plays Gotham City News reporter Mike Engel in The Dark Knight, and while the character reappears throughout the story and is seen interviewing Mayor Garcia and Coleman Reese, its a relatively small role. Many rumors were thrown about during the production of The Dark Knight, with an interesting one being that Hall’s character would be revealed as The Riddler during the story. Hall himself would later clear this up in interviews with outlets like SYFY Wire (via Geeks Of Doom) revealing that – somehow – pictures of him from the set looking at Bruce Wayne’s Lamborghini during filming led people to the conclusion he was the Riddler.

This story was kind of indicative of the wild reports that floated around The Dark Knight prior to release, with the same thing happening to The Dark Knight Rises years later. This included the idea Superman would show up and this would lead into Man Of Steel, which Nolan produced. That said, some of the more “outlandish” suggestions like Joseph Gordon-Levitt secretly playing Robin proved to be mostly accurate. After a long absence from the big screen, The Riddler will finally return for Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman, played by Paul Dano.
