A group of cosplayers recently harkened back to a classic modern Batman scene, depicting it with an aesthetic style evoking Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. The scene is a visual recreation of the climax of the animated movie Batman: Under the Red Hood, which was based off of the 2004-2005 story arc of the same name. The scene is a tragic and tense one, where Batman is forced to decide whether or not to kill the Joker under the threat of the second Robin, Jason Todd, and is perfect for the tone of the Dark Knight trilogy.

The cosplay was posted on Reddit by Saadleup. The original comic book arc (originally just titled Batman: Under the Hood) was written by Judd Winick and primarily drawn by Doug Mahnke. The comic and its animated adaptation are both critically acclaimed and are famous for the official return of Jason after his murder by the Joker in the 1988 arc, A Death in the Family. This was Jason’s first appearance in his most famous persona, the Red Hood. Since he is usually thought of nowadays as an antihero and a welcomed member of the Bat Family, it is easy to forget that originally Jason was thought of as somewhat irredeemable.

The Red Hood was a straight up villain, mentally unstable and Hell-bent on proving Bruce Wayne wrong about his philosophy of refusing to kill criminals. He chose his alias as a mockery of the name the Joker used right before he fell into the vat of chemicals (during a fight with Batman) that drove him insane – a reminder of the sins of Batman’s past. While Red Hood makes a good antihero, he was a great antagonist for Batman, challenging him emotionally and ideologically as well as physically. This is what made the finale of the story, where Batman refuses to kill the Joker when Jason threatens to do the deed himself, and uses a batarang to neutralize Jason, both tragic and exhilarating. It’s a battle similar in a lot of ways to the conflicts between Batman and the Joker in The Dark Knight as well, making the parallel that much more interesting to unpack.

The cosplay is certainly impressive. The Batman and Joker are brought back in their iconic, more realistic Dark Knight looks. Batman’s armor and especially Joker’s sinister makeup look impressive. The Red Hood costume in the scene is a fairly standard comic book-accurate cosplay, and one of visibly high quality. It all looks well-put together. The shot compositions are a direct homage to the hostage crisis scene from the comic, but actually follows the movie more closely, specifically in regard to how Batman baits Jason into pointing the gun at his mentor and then uses a batarang to sabotage the firearm.

Batman: Under the Red Hood and The Dark Knight are two seminal Batman stories in their own ways. Seeing their visual styles and dark, emotionally challenging content meld in a really natural way is both intriguing and satisfying. It’s a wonderful homage to two classic stories that put the consequences of Batman’s relationship with the Joker center stage.
