The Dora Milaje Show How Black Panther 2 Can Work Without TChalla

The Dora Milaje’s presence in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier shows how Black Panther 2 can work without King T’Challa. Chadwick Boseman’s tragic death in 2020 changed the plans for the Black Panther sequel and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige announced that T’Challa would not be recast. Instead, Black Panther 2 is said to focus on the other characters in Wakanda, and evidence from the MCU indicates that the Wakanda-set sequel will still succeed, despite the loss of the fictional country’s king.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is the first glimpse fans have had of Wakandans since the final battle in Avengers: Endgame. At the end of Black Panther in 2018, King T’Challa appeared before the United Nations and announced that Wakanda would open its borders and share its technology with the world for the first time ever. Wakandan Outreach Centers were even built in the United States and elsewhere. These plot points haven’t been followed up since the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe was radically changed by Thanos (Josh Brolin). The return of Ayo (Florence Kasumba) and the Dora Milaje finally sets fans’ eyes back on Wakanda, although the lone flashback in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showed the aftermath of Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) being freed of his Hydra brainwashing years ago. While it’s been over three years since Black Panther became a cultural phenomenon, the Dora Milaje’s powerful impact proves that fans’ interest in Wakanda hasn’t dissipated.

While it’s unclear exactly how Black Panther 2 will deal with the absence of Chadwick Boseman and T’Challa, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier offers persuasive evidence that splitting the focus between characters like the Dora Milaje, Shuri (Letitia Wright), Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), Okoye (Danai Gurira), M’Baku (Winston Duke), Ramonda (Angela Bassett), and W’Kabi (Daniel Kaluuya) will still make for a compelling movie. After all, Ayo was by no means a major character; she was at best a background character as one of T’Challa’s bodyguards in Captain America: Civil War and Black Panther. But The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s retcon that Ayo counseled Bucky post-brainwashing and that she has a friendship with the White Wolf was remarkably effective and added new insight to both characters. Indeed, the Dora Milaje were incredibly impressive fighting Captain America John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Battlestar (Cle Bennett), Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), and Bucky.

How Wakanda fits into the new world order of the MCU post-Avengers: Endgame is inherently interesting as well. There are numerous questions Black Panther 2 can answer: Did Wakanda also welcome foreigners as other nations did during the five years half of all life on the planet was dead? How has the world been changed by Wakanda sharing its Vibranium technology? Also, what became of the undersea anomalies that Okoye told Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) about during Avengers: Endgame? Now that Wakanda is a bigger presence on the world’s stage, its impact will be fascinating to see come to fruition.

Further, without T’Challa as the main focus of Black Panther 2, it’s an opportunity to break the MCU mold of focusing on a central hero and telling an ensemble piece instead. Black Panther 2 could deliver a wider story about Nakia’s activities outside of Wakanda or Shuri also possibly getting to travel outside of her country while M’Baku and W’Kabi update fans on how Wakanda has changed within its borders in the last few years. It’s also safe to say that the Dora Milaje’s stock rose thanks to their impressive showing in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and they could have new adventures with Okoye and Ayo leading the elite warriors.

To compensate for the lack of T’Challa, it’s also quite feasible that Black Panther 2 will have some major MCU guest stars, and Bucky Barnes (known to Wakandans as the White Wolf) would be atop that list. Following up on Baron Helmut Zemo (Daniel Bruhl), whom the Dora Milaje brought to the Raft for imprisonment would also be welcome. Black Panther 2 is a prime opportunity to elevate the entire Wakandan cast of characters into major players in the MCU, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier proved fans desire to return to Wakanda is as strong as ever.
