The Eradicator How Krypton’s Greatest Weapon Replaced Superman

WARNING: The following contains fleeting spoilers for Superman & Lois Season 1, Episode 10, “O Mother, Where Art Thou?” which aired Tuesday on The CW.

Over the years, Superman has had a lot of sidekicks, including Supergirl, Power Girl, Superboy and Steel. These heroes typically have a genetic link of some sort to Superman or have taken at least some inspiration from his heroism in some way. One character who was definitely not like the Man of Steel, however, was the Eradicator.

An alien AI devoted to violently preserving Kryptonian culture, the Eradicator had more similarities to the mentality of General Zod than to Superman. Introduced in the Post-Crisis, the Eradicator was one of several surrogate “Supermen” to operate in the wake of the real Man of Steel’s death. Now that the Eradicator has been introduced in its earliest form in Superman and Lois, we’re taking a look back at how the “Last Son of Krypton” went from villain to hero to everything in between.

Reign of the Eradicator

The Eradicator in its original form was created by Roger Stern and classic Superman artist Curt Swan in 1989’s Action Comics Annual #2. The Eradicator was an alien device that was discovered by Kem-L, the distant ancestor of Kal-El/Superman. Kem-L, an incredibly wicked man, used the device to preserve what he saw as the prime of Krypton’s culture, and the machination was eventually tied into nearly every facet of Kryptonian culture and life. This gave it access to the birthing matrices of Kryptonians, which he tied to the planet itself to keep any Kryptonians from ever leaving Krypton. Beforehand, he altered the matrices of a group that left the planet to make them deathly allergic to lead, creating the Daxamite race.

The Eradicator was eventually taken off-world by the Cleric, a member of the race that created it, before ending up on Mongul’s Warworld. There it encountered Superman, who learned more about his planet’s past through the Eradicator and the Cleric. The Cleric convinced a despondent Man of Steel that Earth still needed him, prompting him to return there with the Eradicator in tow. The Eradicator was responsible for creating the Post-Crisis version of the Fortress of Solitude, but its dedication to preserving and restoring Krypton proved deadly.

The Eradicator tried to make Superman himself more Kryptonian, but Superman in turn threw the device into the sun when it attacked his father. It survived and was able to use the yellow sun energy to create a humanoid form for itself. When Superman died at the hands of Doomsday, the Eradicator returned in a form very similar to Superman’s. The main differences, however, were the energy beam powers of this “Visor Wearing Superman,” as well as his greater penchant for violence. The Eradicator would prove itself a hero, however, by sacrificing itself to save and fully restore Superman when he confronted the evil Cyborg Superman.

The Eradicator would return to life by merging with the body of S.TA.R. Labs scientist David Connor. This incarnation of the anti-hero would face off against the still existing Eradicator AI program that was in Superman’s Fortress of Solitude. He would also gain a new role of sensing aberrant beings who were not meant to exist in the main Earth, such as the Wildstorm character Mr. Majestic. The Eradicator’s last major Post-Crisis role was in sacrificing himself again to defeat Lex Luthor’s army of cloned Doomsdays.

The New Eradicator

The New 52 would briefly feature the Eradicator as an energy being protecting Supergirl’s fortress, but this version had no real connection to the previous one. In 2016, the Eradicator stepped into the DC Rebirth era in Peter Tomasi and Patrick Gleason’s Superman #2, again characterizing him as a villainous AI hellbent on defending Kryptonian purity. Operating on his own as well as fighting alongside General Zod and the Superman Revenge Squad, his desire to preserve Krypton as he sees it has put him into conflict with Superman, Jon Kent and the entire Justice League.

The character’s main roles outside of the comics have been in video games and animation, with most of these adaptations being based on the Death of Superman storyline where he was most prominent. The DC Animated Universe’s version of Brainiac was also loosely based on the Eradicator, but the character wouldn’t make his official animated debut until the 2018 animated adaptation of Superman’s demise. His renewed popularity in the comics, however, may see Superman’s most violent occasional ally become more prominent than ever.
