The Eternals Couldnt Be Snapped By Thanos Says Director

Warning: This post contains slight spoilers for Eternals.

Director ChloĆ© Zhao explains why the main characters of her new Marvel movie Eternals couldn’t have been snapped by Thanos. The MCU’s latest offering arrived in theaters this past weekend and has sent shockwaves through the entire franchise. Not only does it stand as one of the most divisive Marvel movies of all time, Eternals has brought about multiple firsts for the MCU, from its first deaf hero (Lauren Ridloff’s Makkari) to its first openly gay hero (Brian Tyree Henry’s Phastos). The movie itself focuses on introducing the Eternals, a group of cosmic immortal beings, to the universe by telling a dual narrative set in both the past and the present day.

Overall, Eternals holds few connections to the greater MCU, save for a few references to characters like Doctor Strange and Iron Man. Nevertheless, ever since 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War erased half of the MCU, fans have been preoccupied with wondering what happened to each new character introduced afterward. The same thing happened with September’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, as fans questioned star Simu Liu and the rest of the cast over whether their characters were victims of Thanos’ snap.

There were plenty of questions about the fates of the Eternals too, and Zhao has an answer for them. Speaking to CinemaBlend ahead of Eternals’ release, Zhao stopped herself from outright stating why the cosmic team couldn’t be blipped away, but did heavily hint at why they all emerged from Infinity War unscathed. Zhao said:

Well, I can’t say this out loud, but if you think about… if you think about what the Celestials told them. If you think about what the Celestials told them about themselves, technically they can’t get blipped.

As Eternals reveals, the characters were all made by the Celestials thousands of years ago, and instead of living as biological lifeforms, they’re made of artificial parts. That would disqualify them from Thanos’ snap, as he only sought to destroy half of all life. This means all 10 Eternals were still alive in the stretch between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and thus likely witnessed how humanity struggled to move on. While some members of the team, like Sersi (Gemma Chan), developed a love for humans, others felt differently, and that conflict is a key part of the movie itself.

Since Endgame reversed the snap, new projects in the MCU have made various attempts to examine what life is like on the other side of it to varying degrees of success. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is the only one so far to truly reckon with the effects of the snap and its reversal, though Eternals made a handful of references to it as well. When considering none of the characters were affected by it, though, it makes more sense that there would be little discussion about what happened to them all. For them, it was a tragic event that hurt humans, and nothing more.
