The Expanse Season 5 Theory Earth Mars or Belters Who the Real Villain Is

Who might the real villain be in The Expanse season 5? The political climate of the Sol system in The Expanse’s science fiction world is far from simple. With humankind spread across Earth’s neighbors, deep divisions have formed between the blue planet and the powerful new force of Mars, who no longer see themselves as mere colonists. Away from the system’s two big settlements, many reside on asteroids and other smaller celestial bodies. Known as Belters, these citizens have their own distinct culture but live very hard lives, taking a dim view of both Earth and Mars for exploiting their proud population.

Over the past 4 seasons of The Expanse, relations between these 3 sides have improved somewhat thanks to the efforts of James Holden’s Rocinante crew, Earth’s Chrisjen Avasarala, Mars’ Bobbie Draper, and the Belt’s Fred Johnson, among others. Officially, all 3 sides are now supposed to be on the same page, working together to investigate the mysterious Protomolecule. In reality, however, the wounds of division are yet to heal. A group of Belter extremists calling themselves the Free Navy have emerged, led by the cunning and charismatic Marco Inaros. Marco’s actions would seem to suggest Belters will be the villains in The Expanse season 5, but the situation is more nuanced than that.

The Expanse season 4 revealed that Marco was being armed by high-ranking figures on Mars, who were siphoning disused weapons to the Free Navy. Bobbie and Chrisjen will be exploring this conspiracy when The Expanse returns, but it’s safe to assume that getting into bed with Inaros isn’t the official position of the Mars government. The smuggled weapons more likely come from a handful of disgruntled but powerful schemers in the Martian hierarchy. As such, are the villains of The Expanse season 5 a coalition between Belters and Martians? That statement sits closer to the truth, but doesn’t quite represent what’s truly happening in The Expanse.

One of the main themes at the heart of The Expanse is how the lines between good and evil are very rarely clear. Take the Protomolecule conspiracy from The Expanse’s early seasons, for example. Agents from both Earth and Mars were secretly working with Jules -Pierre Mao during those initial Protomolecule experiments, costing many lives in the process. Once the truth was laid bare, Mao was revealed to be operating on a clandestine basis with shady types like Errinwright, who was representing Earth without the UN’s knowledge. One of The Expanse’s key messages is how Earth, Mars and The Belt actually do share common goals, but dark forces from all sides stand in the way of peace. There is never a clear, undisputed villain among them.

In The Expanse season 5, history appears to be repeating itself. Marco Inaros will likely be the main villain of The Expanse season 5, but he does not represent The Belt as a whole, with figures such as Fred Johnson, Naomi Nagata and Camina Drummer firmly against the Free Navy’s violent methods. Similarly, Mars’ involvement in this insidious plot doesn’t necessarily make them villains either. Bobbie’s story in The Expanse season 4 depicted Mars as a society coming apart. Once unified by the common goal of terraforming, Martian ambition has now turned towards the Ring Gates, causing the old shared dream of Mars to be forgotten. Naturally, some powerful Martians are going to be unsettled by this changing landscape, and it could be these defectors siding with the Free Navy, perhaps in a misguided attempt to refocus the planet on the terraforming project. To paint Mars as the villains of The Expanse season 5, however, would do the Red Planet itself a disservice.

Although Earth, Mars and The Belt are the 3 main factions in The Expanse, previous seasons have shown that all sides are capable of good and evil. Amazingly, Earth’s hands are seemingly clean in season 5, with no signs of involvement from Chrisjen’s side, but that doesn’t automatically make them the “good guys.” The Expanse season 5’s villain is a dangerous Belter extremist with connections to renegade disillusioned Martians, but make no mistake, other Belters and Martians will be just as eager to stop them as Holden and his crew.
